Tubing in Vang Vieng Laos
I met some amazing backpackers and we did the infamous Tubing in Vang Vieng, Laos. A popular activity on the South East Asia backpacking trail. It’s an insane day drinking experience; you get on a Tuk Tuk, grab a tube and float down the Nam Song River, stopping at a few bars; drinking potent local whiskey and dodgy cocktails. Sounds fun right? Well it was.

Shot on a GoPro Hero+ which fell in the murky waters (silly me forgot to attach the floaty). Massive shout out to Rob Parry who found it at the bottom of the river. You wouldn't have seen this video if it wasn't for his impeccable freediving skills.

???????? $8 HOTEL.RIVER TUBING . VANG VIENG , LAOS . Jair Canada
When in Vang Vieng Laos the number 1 thing to do is go for a float down the Nam Song River . The scenery is beautiful , the limestone cliffs dominate the skyline . There used to be several bars along the shore . Locals would throw you a rope a tow you into their bar . Times have changed now there are only 2 bars on the entire river .
Tubing in VangVieng
One of the most famous and storied activities to do in Vangvieng is Tubing. Basically floating down 4 km of river bisecting the city, all the while drinking and partying. Not exactly the most “jayoe” thing to do… but I wanted to give it a try.
here is a story about the dangerous past of tubing in Vangvieng:

I booked a trip through a random kiosk in town for US$15, and the next morning, I was picked up with a small group of backpackers for our big adventure. Little did I know that I'd be tubing as well! Before the kayaking, we got to tube through a river cave - so much fun! After lunch, we visited what is known as the Elephant Cave, where we picked up fortunes. And we concluded the day kayaking down the same river on which the infamous tubing parties embark. Overall, I much preferred kayaking over tubing. My ass thanked me for not exposing it to all those rocks!

There is a small village at a river in the middle of Laos.
Vang Vieng became party spot for young western travel people.
Sometime the locals are quite shocked about this kind of western celebration and party culture.

crazy!! tubing in Vang Vieng Laos Backpackers In Laos
Video about our stop at the tubes at Vang Vieng on our trip through laos. Must see!
the MOST beautiful place to party in the WORLD? - Vang Vieng
Did you even go to Vang Vieng if you didn’t go tubing??
We rented tubes and were carried along by the rivers current through the most beautiful scenery.
The bar scene along the river is much more restricted than several years ago however, everyone still parties hard. We had so much fun - we definitely recommend that you do this if you visit Laos.

We are Lucia and Wayne. In October 2017, we quit our jobs in the UK so that we could travel the world and lead a life full of excitement and happiness.
We asked ourselves one question - What is the most amazing thing that we have done this year?”. It was difficult to answer, not because we had done lots, but because like many, we were leading a 9-5 lifestyle and living for the weekends.
With that, the decision to pack our bags was a very easy one and so, off we went to our first stop - India. Every single day since we left has been truly amazing - experiencing different cultures, making new friends from all over the world and seeing the most beautiful sights imaginable.
Our journeys were inspired by watching others on YouTube and so, we are extremely passionate about sharing ours with you. Subscribe here to keep up with our adventure ????
Vang Vieng Tubing, Laos
youtube travel videos
If teenagers ruled the world, it might resemble Vang Vieng in Northern Laos
NZ Herald
When I visited Vang Vieng in August 2012, it was the hottest ticket on the South East Asian backpacker trail. Little did I know, that same month, it would change forever, being shutdown due to government pressure following numerous backpacker deaths.
The sleepy riverside rice growing village became popular about 10 years ago due to the practise of visiting volunteers on an organic farm, riding tractor tire tubes down the Nam Song River. Tubing became the town’s point of difference and from that humble beginning begot riverside bars, nightly parties and tv bars serving endless repeats of family guy and friends, made palatable with servings of ‘happy’ pizzas, topped with magic mushrooms. The drink of the Nam Song is a Whisky Bucket - copious local whiskey, red bull and soft drink served up in a bucket for only $3.50.
“Laos is the most heavily bombed country on earth, hit by an average of one B-52 bomb every 8 minutes, 24 hrs a day, between '64 and '73 by U.S. forces
It was a backpacker’s dream location - cheap prices, beautiful scenery and lawlessness. Days spent riding the river and nights spent partying, with an revolving array of young hedonists from around the globe to share the fun with. At one of the riverside bars, the barmen kept a record of the most ‘shag’s' in a day and the double digit figures attest to what a wild party town Vang Vieng was.
27 tourists died on the river in 2011, most drowning in the fast flowing waters of the Nam Song. Figures for 2012 were 7 tourists dead, including two Aussies, by August. Outside pressure on the government lead to the riverside bars being closed down late August and the scene changing forever.
I found Vang Vieng an interesting sociological experiment. Market forces work on supply and demand. Rice farming is one of the most labour intensive industries in the world. When locals see an opportunity to fulfil a need by setting up riverside bars, who is to blame for tourists over-indulging? Do we as humans really need to be controlled and regulated against ourselves?
Vang Vieng in the day was wild and crazy and a hell of a lot of fun…for a few days! To capture the madness I went with a track from The Stooges: ‘TV EYE’, from their 1970 funhouse album. And of course to match such frenetic raw music I needed to edit this baby like a epileptic's nightmare!
In my video I didn’t want to pontificate about who was right or wrong over the deaths, I just wanted to show you what it was like. I hope you enjoy what some would call tourism gone wrong and other’s, who survived the bedlam, one crazy ride!

Tubing in Vang Vieng, Laos
This is a collection of photos and a couple of videos of our tubing trip in Vang Vieng, Laos.
It is so fun. You get a tube (an old tractor tyre) and you go down the river on it. All the way down the river are bars that also serve you opium shakes and spliffs. Everyone just mellows out while floating down the river. You spend the day drinking beer Laos, whiskey, rum etc. There are also rope swings.
Song featured is:
Pink Floyd and Enya - Deep Forest- Sweet Lullaby.
