Witham is a town in the county of Essex in the East of England. Witham is part of the District of Braintree and is twinned with the town of Waldbröl, Germany. Witham stands between the city of Chelmsford (8 miles to the south-west) and the town of Colchester (13 miles to the north-east), on the Roman road between the two. The River Brain runs through the town and joins the River Blackwater just outside.
The town is served by Witham railway station, situated on the London Liverpool Street to Ipswich main line operated by Abellio Greater Anglia. Trains take approximately 40-45 minutes to reach Liverpool Street. The station is also the junction for the Braintree branch line to Braintree. Another branch line, now dismantled, went from Witham to Maldon.
Witham is situated on the A12 trunk road between Chelmsford and Colchester, that is to say the Roman road from London to Colchester. Originally the A12 ran in a straight line through the middle of the town; however for some decades there has been a by-pass completely avoiding the town.
Witham has a mainly linear town centre focused around the high street and two shopping precincts to form a cross that bisects the high street – the Newlands Shopping Centre of 1970s design to the north, and the Grove Centre of a 1980s brick design to the south. There are also a range of small shops, restaurants, pubs, major high-street banks and several national commercial chains.
Witham also has a hockey club formed in 1924 and is now made up of 5 men's teams and 3 women's teams. Witham also participates in the local mixed league as well as the men's and women's summer league and indoor league. Witham hockey club play on the astro turf across the road from Maltings Academy on Spinks Lane. The hockey club share a clubhouse with the cricket club which is situated next to the recreation ground, commonly known as the Maldon Road Park, on Maldon Road.
Leisure facilities include Benton Hall Golf and Country Club, a pool club, and a library which occupies the site of what was the town's long-closed cinema, the Whitehall. A 'River Walk' runs for three-and-a-half miles through the town and is home to a range of wildlife. Witham Leisure Centre is located in Spinks Lane, adjacent to the former Bramston Sports Centre.

Much of the UK in for a cold snap tonight as fog swapped for freeze
It's time to break out the hot water bottles tonight as temperatures are forecast to plummet to zero in parts of England. Temperatures will be chilliest across the south and east of England overnight after a foggy day. Exeter is set to feel the worst of the bite, with a forecast for more fog and freezing conditions by midnight. The city will feel the lowest temperatures across the UK tonight before returning to milder temperatures by lunchtime. The mercury in the rest of the UK will also plummet to the single digits overnight, as weather warnings remain in force for much of Scotland over Thursday and Friday. The Met Office has forecast a weakening band of rain moving southeast tonight from northwest England and Wales. The northwest is set to get showers and a windy battering before the cloud and rain moves north to Scotland. The forecaster has issued a yellow warning covering western Scotland, stretching to Glasgow and Inverness, on Thursday. Persistent heavy rain forecast is set to cause localised flooding and travel disruption, the Met Office says. The warning continues into Friday, as the heavy downpour diminishes to showers, with power cuts possible in Scotland's west and buses and trains likely to be affected by surface flooding in some areas. There are also flood warnings in force for parts of England. Residents in the South Winterbourne Valley in Dorchester have been warned groundwater levels are peaking and they will need to activate their pumps. The Environment Agency has warned some properties with basements and cellars are at risk of experiencing groundwater flooding today, which could get worse as wet weather hits over the weekend. Residents and farms in the Low Barlings and Short Ferry Area regions of Lincolnshire are being warned to expect more flooding as levels at the Barlings Eau and River Witham have risen due to recent weeks' rainfall. Locals are also being urged to avoid walking on the banks of the River Witham as local authorities pump water out of the flooded areas amid a risk low-lying properties will be inundated. Forecasters have predicted a brutal Arctic snap to hit Britain in time for the General Election . Temperatures will again plummet to below freezing across the country with snow expected in some areas next week. We do believe [that] a short, cold snap is on the cards some time around the General Election. The early signs are of a cold wintry spell mid to late next week, Michael Dukes, director of forecast at MetDesk, told Mirror Online earlier today . So there may well be a wintry spell mid to late next week, coinciding with the General Election. During the second half of next week, we can expect a colder spell with temperatures below normal again. Normal depends on where you live in the country. We are expecting around December 11, 12, 13 and 14 to be cold. Met Office 5-day forecast Tonight: Some fog for parts of south and southeastern England Wednesday night, most lifting a

We take a tour of the historical city of Lincoln in Lincolnshire, UK. The city was first garrisoned in the 1st century AD by the Romans, where it went by the name Lindum Colonia.
There is plenty of history in the architecture of the city - particularly Lincoln Castle and Lincoln Cathedral, both consecrated in the 11th century. Other notable buildings include Jew's House (6:28), built in the 12th Century and one of the oldest town houses still standing in England, and Leigh-Pemberton House (9:43), a genuine timber-framed Tudor house built in 1543.
The walk starts on Waterside South adjacent to the river Witham, and proceeds down Lincoln High Street, leading to the famous aptly named Steep Hill. This in turn takes us to Castle Hill, where we find to the west Lincoln Castle, and to the east Lincoln Cathedral.

Maldon is a town on the Blackwater estuary in Essex, England. Maldon is the seat of the Maldon District and starting point of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. It is most renowned for Maldon Sea Salt which is produced in the area.
Maldon is a town of circa 15000 people on the tidal River Chelmer by the Blackwater Estuary in Essex. It is on the A414 10 miles (16 km) east of Chelmsford, and 49 miles (79 km) north east of Charing Cross, London, using the A13.
Essex is a county built on London clay, overlain with pockets of gravel deposited by riperian action, the lowest land is made up of river alluvium and salt marsh. At Maldon the railway cutting (now a road cutting) provided a reference section for geologists. There are three landslips on the north-facing river cliff of the Blackwater at Maldon. The middle slip is called the West Maldon Landslip, which was caused by repeated rotational slips of the bedrock London Clay, which is trying to reach a stable angle.
Hythe Quay at the confluence of the Chelmer and Blackwater, which flanks the northern edge of the town, was an important port, and Cooks Yard remains significant for Thames barges. The River Blackwater, that was diverted into the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, re-emerges into the Blackwater Estuary, through locks at the Heybridge Basin, the stream bed passes down Heybridge Creek. and this delinearates the border between Maldon Town and Heybridge Parish Council.
Maldon's first railway link was a branch line to Witham opened in 1846. Later a second line linked Maldon with Woodham Ferrers on the Crouch Valley Line between Southminster and Wickford line. Whilst Wickford is itself on the line between Shenfield and Southend (thus providing Maldon with another route into London Liverpool Street), a short-lived spur line at Wickford also gave direct access towards Southend.
Maldon West railway station was opened in 1889 by the Great Eastern Railway. The line between Maldon and South Woodham Ferrers closed to passengers in 1939, the Maldon and Witham line closed in 1966. The nearest railway stations to Maldon are now Hatfield Peverel, Witham and North Fambridge. Hatfield Peverel is the closest railway station to the north of the town, whilst North Fambridge is closest to southern parts of the town.

The River Roding in Full Flow
The normally gentle and placid River Roding in Essex/East London is in full flow following prolonged rain, and the water meadows are doing a splendid job as flood plains. These act as huge reservoirs, temporarily holding back water, reducing the risk of flooding further downstream.

Braintree is a town in Essex, England. The principal settlement of Braintree District, it is located 10 miles northeast of Chelmsford and 15 miles west of Colchester.
Braintree has grown contiguous with several surrounding settlements. Braintree proper lies on the River Brain and to the south of Stane Street, the Roman road from Braughing to Colchester, while Bocking lies on the River Blackwater and to the north of the road. The two are sometimes referred to together as Braintree and Bocking, and since 1934 they form the civil parish of that name.
Braintree is bypassed by the modern-day A120 and A131 roads, while trains serve two stations in the town, at the end of the Braintree Branch Line. Braintree is twinned with Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, France, and gives its name to the towns of Braintree, Massachusetts and Braintree, Vermont, in the United States.
Braintree lies in north Essex, about 46 miles (74 km) from London, with factories and housing to the south and rural areas to the north, where arable crops are grown. It lies about 150 feet (46 m) above sea level. Essex is rather flat on the whole, and the Braintree area is no exception; however, there is a general downward trend in the height of the ground from the northwest towards the coast to the southeast. Two rivers flow through Braintree in this direction. Pod's Brook approaches the western side of the town, forming a natural boundary between Braintree and the neighbouring village of Rayne about two miles (3 km) to the west.
Braintree's museum, containing displays relating to the history of the town. The Braintree Arts Theatre opened in 2009 on the Notley High School campus. The Braintree and Bocking Carnival takes place each June.
Braintree has two main market areas that link throughout the town, which are run twice weekly, on a Wednesday and a Saturday. They are based outside the Town Hall in Market Square, and also run along Bank Street and the High Street. The High street is mainly a pedestrianised area, which allows only buses to commute through the town.
Freeport is a shopping area on the outskirts of Braintree, described as a designer outlet village. It has approximately 90 departments where designer brands sell surplus stock for lower than the recommended retail price. Freeport also has its own railway station, namely Braintree Freeport railway station, which is the first stop on the journey from Braintree to London Liverpool Street via Witham.
Braintree has two railway stations, Braintree and Braintree Freeport next to the Freeport shopping area. Bocking Windmill, technically a part of Bocking, the windmill stands proud over the countryside at the North end of Braintree & Bocking. The Braintree District Museum is located opposite the Town Hall, along Manor Street, and was originally the Manor Street School.
