Lights In Flight To Light Up Dayton Thursday
DAYTON -- The City of Dayton held its annual Lights in Flight fireworks festival Thursday night downtown. The block party was held along Riverscape Metropark and Deeds Park along the Great Miami River. The fireworks show started at 10pm and lasted about 25 minutes, but hours before the first fireworks went off, people were downtown claiming their spots to watch the show. Actually this is Plan B, said Englewood resident Autumn Hamlett, usually we sit on the steps down more so near the water but since it's muddy and yucky it's the bench and the swing this year. Hamlett and her family came around 4pm to claim a bench swing along Riverscape's bike path, knowing the popular picnicking spots along the river levees would be blocked off because of recent flooding. I've never seen a summer as wet as this year in Dayton, Hamlett said. The weather help up, though, through the event, for activities and musicians to perform as scheduled. The performances started with local American Idol finalist Alexis Gomez, who was happy to be in her hometown for the Fourth of July. We are so excited just to be here with everyone and celebrate this amazing country, Gomez said, and there's no better way to do that then with country music right? Event organizers say there was a crowd of about 50,000 people by the end of the night, which was everything they could hope for when it comes to turn out on a Thursday night. It's pretty much a cost issue to keep the festival feasible, said event coordinator Lamonte Hall Jr. with the City of Dayton. After the fireworks streets remained closed until 2am. A fight was reported at the RTA hub following the event. For many it's become a family tradition. I've lived in Dayton most of my life and I have been seeing them about every year. Sometimes I don't come down here but I can see them from my house, said Larry Wheatley. You know how little kids go 'ooh' and 'ahhh,' that was me. So yeah, it was awesome, added Erica Edwards. Erica hasn't been in a few years but she's thinking about checking out Thursday's display. She sat near the river the last time she watched. (It's) exciting to see it up close. I mean now you have to, I mean now you can still sit but you gotta basically stand and you can't sit in the grass. You can't get close to the water so you're cooler, said Edwards. With all the rain and high water several of the favorite spots are blocked off. Besides the high water, this years display is on July 2nd instead of the actual holiday. Erica thinks that will make it easier for many families. People are going to see their family and be with their family on Saturday. So (having it on) a Thursday, kids are out of school, people are off work and they can come and relax and watch fireworks, said Edwards. Fire crews want to see you down there as well. Not only to enjoy the show, but also because they know just how dangerous fireworks can be for anyone but a professional. It runs the gamut from just small minor injuries, which are fairly common with regard to fireworks up to fatal injuries, said Adams. One of those fatal injuries happened not too long ago. I believe it was in Tennessee, that there was a death, a 12-year-old death from these fireworks that are legal to purchase in Ohio but they're illegal to possess after the time constraint and they're illegal to discharge at any point in the state of Ohio, said Adams. Feel free to bring blankets and chairs to make yourself as comfortable as possible, but safety crews dont want to see anyone bring their own fireworks. Not necessarily the best place to bring those (fireworks). You're going to have large crowds of people potentially. They're going to be in close areas. So it's best to leave the fireworks show the exhibitors here at the site and just enjoy the fireworks, said Adams. Click here to learn more about the event. Originally posted Wednesday, July 1, 2015.
Urban Pioneers At RiverScape MetroPark Pickin in The park
Mix one part Texas fiddle and one part Tennessee banjo, add doghouse bass and a splash of guitar and you have a delicious cocktail for your ears known as the Urban Pioneers. This string band hammers out a variety of original songs that encompass old time hillbilly music, western swing, rockabilly, and even a few gypsy type songs for good measure. The talent in the band clearly lies with miss Liz Sloan. If there had ever been any ‘heck’ in her fiddle then it is all gone by now because she plays the heck out of it night after night. The whole reason Jared even writes or sings songs is so that miss Liz will have something to play along to. Jared is a self-proclaimed “horrible banjo player” so we won’t talk about him too much but he does write some silly songs. The duo is accompanied on the road by a doghouse bass player, a guitar player, and whoever else they can find that can play something and doesn’t snore. The band stays on the road all over the world for over 250 days a year. In 2014 they toured extensively in the US and Europe and in 2015 they will do it again and add South America to the list. The Urban Pioneers love to play music for people.
