Council Meeting - January 9, 2017
- City of Brandon Director of Emergency Communications Ross Robinson presented to Council to recognize 2017 as the 20th anniversary of e-911 call taking in Manitoba. The Provincial Enhanced e-911 service is run out of Brandon’s No. 1 Fire Hall and is responsible for taking emergency calls from all areas of Manitoba outside of the City of Winnipeg. An official celebration of the anniversary is set for May 31st in Brandon.
- Council received an annual report presentation from Lois McDonald and Bernie Chrisp of Brandon Riverbank Inc. Chrisp noted that the Riverbank Discovery Centre saw more than 25,000 visitors last year, and that 2016 also saw the launch of the Riverbank’s 20-year “Back to the River” Master Plan, the inaugural project of which will be the creation of a “Festival Park” to act as a gathering and celebration space on-site. The full presentation by Chrisp and McDonald can also be viewed here:
- City Treasurer Dean Hammond presented an overview of the proposed 2017 municipal budget, which currently represents a municipal tax increase of 2.95%. City Council will deliberate and, ultimately, make changes to the proposed budget on Jan.20th & 21st, with these sessions being open to the public to observe. Hammond’s full presentation can be found on the City of Brandon website here:
- City Council gave approval to a number of by-laws, including one to approve general updates to the Temporary Sign By-law, one to amend the Building By-law with respect to regulations regarding fire sprinklers within multi-unit residential structures, and one to amend the Animal Control By-law to remove the restriction of dogs in the municipal cemetery.
Council Meeting - January 7, 2019
Highlights:
- A presentation was received from Brett Turner, representing the Brandon Sport Alliance, who provided an update on the former group’s plans to re-establish itself as a collaborative of local sport organizations and asked for Council’s support and City administrative support/board representation. The request was referred back to City administration for consideration.
- A presentation was received from Brandon Riverbank Inc. General Manager James Montgomery and Board Chair Bernie Chrisp, who provided Council with an update on the organization’s 2018 activities and upcoming initiatives. On the horizon for the Brandon Riverbank Discovery Centre will be the opening of the new on-site Festival Park performance venue this spring, continued work to implement the Discovery Gardens, Peter Sawatzky Sculpture Gardens, and Discovery Cove river inlet components of the Riverbank’s 20-year master plan, and work to re-establish adequate trail lighting and trail connections/surfacing.
- A delegation was received from Elisabeth Saftiuk, Executive Director of the Brandon Downtown Development Corporation (BDDC), asking for City of Brandon funding support of $350,00 for the 2019 fiscal year, and noting that since the termination of a previous multi-year funding agreement with the Province, City Council’s financial support has been integral to the BDDC’s efforts to revitalize downtown via its various funding incentives and public programming initiatives. The BDDC request for funding was deferred to Brandon City Council’s budget deliberations, which will take place in late-January.
- Council approval of a community event status request from the Westman Multicultural Festival. The organization seeks the status each year, which allows festival pavilions to stay open longer each night of the festival and serve liquor as allowed under Manitoba’s licensing regulations. This year’s festival is set for January 31st to February 2nd, with 10 pavilions featured at community venues across Brandon. A separate request from the organization for an additional $6,500 in municipal funding this year was referred to Brandon City Council’s 2019 budget deliberations.
