Buses in Queanbeyan, New South Wales (QCity Transit)
In this video we see some buses in Queanbeyan, a large city situated in the Southern Tablelands region in New South Wales. With a population of around 36,000, Queanbeyan borders Australia's capital city Canberra; situated only 15km (9 miles) west of the capital.
Quenabeyan is served by a bus network operated by QCity Transit, a subsidiary of CDC NSW. QCity Transit operates routes to and from Canberra and local routes within Queanbeyan. In this video we see QCity Transit buses at a number of locations within the city, mostly in the vicinity of the two main bus stops. The first being Morisset Street (outside Riverside Plaza) and the second being Queanbeyan Interchange, a purpose built park and ride facility that opened in July 2015.
QCity Transit was previously known as Deane's Buslines which was a family run operation. They generally bought Volvo B7RLE buses with P&D Coachworks bodies. They also have a couple of MAN 12.220 midi's used on local services. Deanes Buslines was sold to CDC in September 2012 and was rebranded to QCity Transit in July 2013, who have since bought Volvo B7RLE's with Volgren 'Optimus' bodies.
Overall I think it's a decent operation with some decently frequent services to and from Canberra that are well utilized. However a couple of the local services I observed had rather low patronage, not helped by the limited timetable for these services. I also think that some fares are quite expensive compared to fares in neighbouring Canberra. For instance I paid for a return fare from Canberra which would have cost around $9 at the time. Meanwhile over the border in Canberra a similar amount of money gave me unlimited travel on Canberra's public transport throughout the day.
Despite being so close to Canberra, different jurisdictions and funding sources mean that the public transport networks of Queanbeyan and Canberra aren't truly integrated with one another. Infact I dare say they actually compete with one another. For instance Queanbeyan residents who don't want to take QCity Transit can simply drive less than 2.5km over the border to a park and ride facility in the Canberra suburb of Fyswick. There they can board frequent ACTION bus services into the centre of Canberra, including the route 200 Red Rapid.
