Naperville Riverwalk Addition
A small addition will be made at the end of the Webster Street footbridge near the Naperville Township building, where the Riverwalk leads to the Water Street District.
It’s being installed due to safety concerns at the location, which leads pedestrians through a parking lot and is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.
“I am a huge proponent of public safety anywhere on the Riverwalk and this is something I’ve always been concerned about: the exit of this bridge into the parking lot,” said Riverwalk Commissioner Stephanie Penick.
A portion of the township building’s parking lot will be removed to make the addition, which will feature an accessible eight-foot wide brick pathway, a four-foot buffer to the parking lot, new landscaping, and Naperville’s first automatic flagpole.
The Riverwalk Foundation is privately funding the project, which will be completed by the end of May.
The Riverwalk Commission is also planning a photo contest for the Riverwalk’s 35th anniversary, be on the look out for it this summer.

Changes to one of Naperville’s top attractions could be coming as the planning, design and construction commissioners discussed several development guidelines for the riverwalk.
Some ideas include work on the north and south shoreline between Main Street and Washington Street. Commissioners also brainstormed ideas for the Grand Pavilion.
“Reimagining the Grand Pavilion and the adjacent parking lot on the west extension is another project,” said Riverwalk Administrator Janette Erickson. “This project could enhance the existing structure providing a more useable space for all the races and activities that take place there.”
Another guideline pitched, was the addition of bike lanes on the east extension from Hill Side Road. to Washington Street.
“This project would design a pathway that would be safe for both pedestrians and bicyclists,” said Erickson.
Accesses to the riverwalk could be made easier, with the possible additions of ramps connecting the upper walkway of the Eagle Street. Plaza to the lower walkway.
Expanding the riverwalk from Hill Side Road to Martin Avenue, was also discussed. They also want to continue to partner with North Central College to build the Washington Street Park.
The last guideline they presented was to rehabilitate Moser Tower. A current assessment is being done on the structure. Once the findings are complete they’ll be shared with Naperville City Council who will make the final decision whether to tear it down, or repair parts of it.

Fishing Around Town
It’s a life long sport that can be done any time of the year and almost anywhere.
“You could do it alone or with friends, or family. Then you can almost fish in all seasons; in the spring fish are spawning, in the summer they go a bit deeper, fall they come to feed again and winter you can ice fish right on the pond as long as the ice is four inches thick,” said Bob McNeel, Assistant Manager of Site Operations at the DuPage County Forest Preserve.
All you need to fish locally is a pole, some bait and a license if you’re over the age of 16, and you’ll want to make sure your adhering to other state laws such as only using two poles to a person.
“So you can actively only be fishing with two fishing poles and you have to be attending to them, you can’t walk away and come back. Then you’ll want to know the size limits of the fish if you want to keep them, but we encourage people to practice catch and release so someone else can catch them,” McNeel said.
Depending on where you choose to fish in the area; both the DuPage Forest Preserve and the Park District stock their ponds with a variety of fish.
“We have some pumpkin seeds that kind of have a reddish mark on their gill cover. We have large mouth bass other sunfish, green fish, and hybrids – they often hybridize. So you get a variety of different species, fresh water species,” said Angelique Harshman, Manager of the Knoch Knolls Nature Center.
Fishing is allowed all hours that the preserve and parks are open – dawn to one hour after dusk.

Bucket Lists in Naperville
Senior citizens came to a Naperville library ready to put their dreams into action.
The University of Illinois Extension held a workshop at the 95th Street Library to encourage retirees to create bucket lists. This interactive event reminded seniors of the importance of setting and pursuing goals.
“(A) bucket list is important because a lot of people go through their lives with dreams and visions and goals, and I think they just don’t get around to do them,” said Susan Sloop, Family Life Educator with the University of Illinois Extension Office. “They just say, “One day I’ll do this or I’ll do that.” And this program teaches you to establish goals and set priorities in your life and go out and do those things.”
The Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, who created a series of free workshops across Illinois like this one to help retirees fulfill their desires and check items off their bucket list, brought the group to Naperville.
Workshops will be taking place in seven other locations throughout the state this summer.

Last Fling 2017 is Here
As Labor Day weekend begins, so does the Last Fling.
Held along the riverwalk, Jackson Avenue, and on Rotary Hill, the Naperville Jaycees’ largest event of the year has a lot of fun in store for the community.
Headlining the main stage on Saturday will be Bret Michaels of Poison, on Sunday the Barenaked Ladies, and on Monday, Infinity.
And there’s even more to offer.
“It’s kind of just to come out and spend the day to take it all in. So we have the business expos, the food vendors – lots of great food, we have our free entertainment stage that has a lot of great acts as well, the family fun land, the carnival rides. There’s a lot to offer so it’s just a matter of everyone coming out and trying to take advantage of all of it,” said Executive Director of Last Fling 2017, Helen Taylor.
The Fling Mile, Rooster 5K, and Labor Day Parade will put a close to the festival on Monday.
Proceeds from the Last Fling go to local nonprofit organizations. Donations will also be accepted at ticket booths for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Making a difference and having fun doing it.

From paddle boating to paddle boarding, getting on the water in Naperville this summer is a lot more accessible than some may realize.
Aside from the already popular Naperville Quarry and Knoch Knolls Park locations, options like kayaking and paddle boarding have expanded beyond the center of town.
“Whalon Lake is bigger than the quarry, which is why we added that, because people who have done the quarry before are looking for a new experience, but they may not feel comfortable going on the river,” said Amanda Ray, an assistant manager at Naperville Kayak. “So that’s why Whalon Lake is that good middle ground. It’s bigger and it’s more of a challenge. There are some wind spots there, which give people a great workout when they’re paddling.”
Naperville Kayak has partnered with the Forest Preserve District of Will County to bring single and tandem kayaking to the 85-acre lake on Fridays through Sundays.
“It just is easy, it’s accessible - we’ve got a great location with the Naperville market and we’re right here in Bolingbrook. So it’s really a wide range of people that wouldn’t have access to do something like this anywhere else nearby,” said Founder and Owner of Naperville Kayak Troy Cooper.
Or if you’re more of a paddle boarder, there’s another option for you on the north side of town.
This summer the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is piloting a paddleboard program at Silver Lake at the Blackwell preserve.
“As far as Silver Lake being one of our bigger lakes [at] 60 acres, we do have a lot of water sports already. Standup paddle boarding was a kind of a natural fit to the area as well as another recreational opportunity,” said Jay Johnson, manager of site operations with the forest preserve.
Right now you’ll need to bring your own – but if the program takes off they may add rentals, as they currently do with canoes, kayaks, and rowboats.
Plenty of choices to get outdoors and on the water in Naperville.
You can go to Naperville Kayak’s website to get pricing information for kayak and paddleboard rentals.

Exploring Naperville’s Trails
Looking for an adventure this summer? There are over 200 miles of trails to travel in Naperville and DuPage County.
Hiking, running, or riding, on dirt, crushed limestone, or asphalt -Naperville’s trails are available for a wide variety of uses, letting you get away, without going too far from home.
If you want to hit the trails but aren’t sure where to start, check the Naperville Park District and DuPage and Will County Forest Preserves’ websites. They all have facility and trail information, including distance, trail material, and on-site amenities, so you can plan your trip.
“Take a look at the preserves near your home or a preserve you want to venture to, and look at the map, plan your route. Know how long you want to hike for,” said Justin Frederick, Manager of Site Operations with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.
You’ll want to pick a distance suitable for your activity level, though most of Naperville’s trails are relatively flat and well maintained, making them good for hikers of all ages and skill levels. But different materials may make them more suited for one use than another.
“The larger asphalt trails that range from 10 to 12 feet wide are most suitable for biking, roller blading, but also running and jogging. More of our natural stone trails are for walking or passive recreation like bird watching,” said Eric Shutes, Director of Planning with the Naperville Park District. “A lot of users decide over time which trials best fit their needs.“
Gravel and asphalt are best if you want to walk with a stroller, and if you’re bringing kids, consider trails that have amenities like playgrounds and restrooms.
And be sure to bring enough snacks, bug spray, sunscreen, and especially water for your whole party.
For those looking to take the road less traveled, the Naperville Park District has some smaller footpaths and game trails, which are gradually created over long-term use. These are also known as “paths of desire.”
“Paths of desire are paths that people create overtime by utilizing our trail systems. A lot of the time there’s different features or points of interest that people want to see and they can create these trails,” said Shutes.
If you are going to step off the beaten path, wear long sleeves and pants to protect yourself from things like ticks and poison ivy.
When you’re out in the forests, don’t forget to be courteous to other trail users, and have fun when you hit the trails.

Naperville Flood Sunday September 14th 2008
Just some photos from around Naperville on Sunday 9-14-2008. We had 5 inches of rain on Saturday and then the remnants of Ike moved in and put another 2 or 3 inches down on Sunday. The DuPage River burst it's banks over the Riverwalk and spilled into the recently drained Centennial Beach pool. Jefferson Street had a lot of water just West of the bridge and Raymond Ave was only passable with bigger cars (most smaller cars turned around to find other passable streets). The bridge at McDowell Grove was completely submerged. I could not get close enough to the Dam just NorthEast of The McDonalds to take any pictures because they had it roped off with a guard there.
Park District Ground Breaking
The Naperville Park District recently held the groundbreaking ceremony for their new Activity Center.
Located at the corner of Fort Hill Drive and Quincy Avenue, the nearly 800,000 square foot center will be for all Naperville residents, with an emphasis on senior citizens and those with special needs.
“As a Park District we are please to finally be able to provide this long awaited facility for the community and we look forward to its completion with anticipation,” said Mike Reilly, Park Board President.
Along with lots of space for year round physical activity, the complex will include a childcare area and cafe.
The nearly $23 million project was originally slated to be funded in part by a $2.5 million PARC Grant from the state. After cuts by Governor Rauner, that grant was suspended. But the project was able to move forward through the reallocation of capital funds, taxes, other grants and donations.
You can start planning your trips to the Activity Center beginning in the Fall of 2016.

Barn Demolition
A piece of Naperville history was torn down recently to make way for the future of the Park District.
And with that the demolition of the Barn was underway.
The recreation center was built in 1965 by a group of Naperville students who worked with the city to create a place for local youth to hang out. The Park District acquired it in 1969 and after a 2009 evaluation it was determined that the historic facility would have to come down.
“There is a lot to do with the founding principles of the barn building excitement in the spirit of recreation and giving young children and young adults an opportunity to enjoy themselves and this goes back to 1965 and now since the barn is past its useful life it’s time to take that spirit and move it to the Fort Hill Activity Center,” said Director of Planning for the Naperville Park District, Eric Shutes.
But the area will be given new life when a central maintenance facility is built in its place.
“Today is a step in part of a larger plan that goes back several years of getting community input, also working with Park District staff to determine what the best use for the land will be and that is a maintenance facility. Operations to serve the Ron Ory Garden Plots, Sportsman’s Park, The Riverwalk as well as downtown parks,” Shutes said.
The Park District plans to reuse materials from the old barn in their new facility and even invited the public to collect a bit of the barn for themselves.
The Fort Hill Activity Center opens August 27.
