Cati and Alex Riviera Maya, Mexico 2012
As the title says, this is a video of our vacation to Riviera Maya, Mexico in 2012. I took numerous videos and photos using my Gopro hero 2 while there and got a few pictures from my girlfriend's(Cati) camera and her brother and his girlfriend's(Andrew and Michele)cameras and put this video together. I think every video in this was taken with my Gopro hero 2 in 1080p hd quality so it should look pretty good, I only got the camera a week before we left so I missed some good footage because I wasn't used to working with that camera. This is the first time I have made a video like this and it took me about 20 hours to edit the video properly in Windows Live Movie Maker and then it took me like 2 hours to get it on here(Youtube).
We booked with Westjet Vacations and this was our first trip with them and also our first time in Mexico for everyone in this video. We liked Westjet and Mexico compared to Sunwing which we usually take to Cayo Santa Maria in Cuba.
We booked online for the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort(the lowest end portion of the 5 Barcelo resorts that are all connected) and we were emailed a week before we left and told that they were doing maintenance on that resort and that they would be upgrading us for free to the highest end portion of the resort called the Barcelo Maya Palace Deluxe which was nice although all our excursions were booked for pick up at the other end of the resort, all worked out fine in the end everyone was more than helpful in managing that confusion. At the Barcelo Palace beach you can swim with many sea turtles, they are not baby sea turtles but they are also not huge and old but they are not shy around people and are a blast to watch, also some stingrays, watch where you step because it kind of made me nervous. This resort is about 15 minutes south of Playa Del Carmen and Playacar(The main areas of Riviera Maya) so we took the Collectivo there and back which costs only $3 American(30 pesos) each person each way where as a taxi was $25 for the both of us one way which was no quicker than the Collectivo. There is no topless at this resort because it is very child friendly with their appealing kids water park. Overall personally we found it boring at this resort and will book in Playacar when we go back.
We booked our first excursion with Dolphin Discovery in Puerto Adventuras which was pretty awesome, you will see in the video we paid a bit extra to swim with the Manatees which was an awesome experience overall. Pictures are unaffordably expensive here which was the only real negative.
We also booked for an Extreme Tulum Plus tour with a company called Riviera Adventours, Francisco was our guide for the day. which was a full day(about 10 hours) where we did(in order) Tulum Ruins, Zip lining, swimming in an open cenote where you can jump off a small cliff(maybe 8 feet high), swimming in a caved cenote called Dos Ojos(it gets pretty dark in the cave but they provide you with wicked underwater flashlights and we felt 100% confident we were safe with our amazing tour guide Francisco), we then had an authentic Mexican Lunch at the family's restaurant called Oscar and Lalo's where there was a cool wild monkey called Lala you can play with, then after lunch we went to a lagoon where the sea meets fresh water and there were lots of tropical fish(including some that would nibble on you if you went in their territory which is shown in the video), and finally we went to Akumal beach where we swam with wild and large(old) sea turtles and stingrays, at some areas there were more than 5 sea turtles all in one area. Riviera Adventours and Francisco are awesome, I would highly recommend them to friends and family because they excel in customer service, we really felt like we were with family when we were with Francisco, by far the best day we had in Mexico.
We also visit Cozumel on our second last day, it was really a last minute decision as we were just walking around Playa Del Carmen's 5th Ave shops for a while and randomly bought 4 tickets for the ferry because we thought it would be fun to visit Cozumel, it cost us around $25 per person for a two way ticket and you can go early and either come back early or stay for the day and come back later in the day because there are different times the ferry comes and you can choose how long you want to stay. The part we liked most about Cozumel was the Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville which is a bar located just south(to the right when you get off the ferry facing the island) of the cruise ship ports, we liked it there because on Cozumel there was no beach close by that you could swim in the ocean but at Margaritaville they has a wicked set up off the back patio where you could jump in and play on some stuff they had on the water like a trampoline and other blow up toys. Also lunch at the World's Smallest Hard Rock Cafe was good and not expensive at all.
