If you want to really discover Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and the Riviera Maya area surrounding Cancun, we highly recommend taking this incredible trip to the ancient Mayan Coba ruins. From there, it's just a short drive to these three nearby cenotes.
The entry fee to get into Coba is 70 pesos per person but you should plan on renting bikes to get around the massive Mayan grounds which are 50 pesos per bike. The entry fee for these cenotes is 55 pesos per person per cenote.
If you’ve never been to a cenote, these three near Coba are a wonderful place to start! Not all cenotes are underground like this, in fact, the most popular Playa Del Carmen and Cancun Cenotes are above ground. Still beautiful nonetheless, but nothing compares to venturing deep into the ground near Tulum Mexico to unmask the crystal clear blue/green cenote water below!
Taking a dip into these brisk waters is a little bit of a shock at first, but these cenotes near Playa Del Carmen are probably our best experience on the Yucatan Peninsula to date! It’s not just bikinis and beautiful women in this Playa Del Carmen vlog (although there is plenty of that). Prepare yourself for some of the most gorgeous nature you’ve ever seen with some Quintana Roo cenotes in today’s Mexico travel vlog.

An amazing family vacation in Akumal/Tulum, Mexico (Riviera Maya, Yucatan Peninsula).
My dad took a ton of video footage (over 200 Gb) and mashed it into 1 hour and 24 minutes video you can watch here. We landed pretty late, so first day was not so bright... rest of the footage will do the justice and show you how bright and vibrant that place really is. The most beautiful beaches, amazing turquoise water (especially Mayan Ruins of Tulum footage).
We stayed at Grand Sirenis Mayan Beach (Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya) Resort & Spa. Beautiful 5 star resort, we'd go back in a heartbeat. Everything was top notch, from incredible food, well maintained rooms, service provided in general and super polite resort staff. One word - AMAZEBALLS!!!
Equipment my dad used for recording this video: Panasonic Lumix GH4 (2016 edition), Olympus M.Zuiko 25mm f/1.8, Rokinon 14mm paired with Lens Turbo Mark II focal reducer (speed booster), and GoPro HERO 4 Silver. Some footage was recorded at beautiful 4K (30 fps), later downscaled to 1080p, but most of the other stuff is native 1080p at 60 fps, so make sure you're watching it at 1080p at 60 fps for the best experience.
My dad didn't want to drag too much equipment to the trip, so no stabilizers involved...

Tulum Mayan Ruins - Cruise Excursion 4K
The Tulum Mayan Ruins is an extremely popular tourist destination located in Mexico. Tulum is just a short distance from Cancún and Playa del Carmen on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is one of the best-preserved Maya sites.
The Tulum ruins are situated on a 40 foot cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. There is a staircase down to the beach where visitors can swim at one of the most breathtaking beaches.
There are bus tours that stop at Tulum each day. It is also a very popular cruise excursion. Cruise lines such as Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival have tours that go to Tulum when in port at Cozumel, Mexico.
This video is a complete overview of the Tulum Mayan Ruins tour excursion through Norwegian Cruise Lines.
It starts off with a 40 minute ferry ride from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen. After you arrive, there is a short walk to a coach bus. The bus ride to Tulum is about 50 minutes long. Once in Tulum your tour guide will take you around the ruins and give you a very informative and entertaining overview of the ancient Mayan City. The guided tour takes about 45 minutes. After the guided tour you have about 90 minutes to explore on your own. You can take that time to walk around the ruins or go swimming at the beautiful beach 40 feet below the cliffs. After that you head back to Playa del Carmen and board the ferry back to Cozumel.
There is a short clip of my amazing tour guide, Juan. He is extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. If you take the tour, hopefully you get him because he was great!
In the clip, Juan is talking about the one day a year that the sunrise perfectly lines up to shine directly through the temple window. That day just so happens to be June 21, the summer solstice.

Tulum Mexico Experience
Tulum is a Mayan walled city on the coast of Mexico in the Yucatan peninsula. It is one of the only Mayan cities built on the coast and is a couple minutes outside of Playa Del Carmen.
A few kilometers south of the ruins you will find a lively modern and hipster looking town. The town is full of amazing bars, restaurants, stores, and boutiques. If you do end up biking to the coast of Tulum you will be mesmerized by what you find there: the boutique style hotels and a hipster world full of dream catchers, dreamy dresses, hippy clothing stores, hip coffee shops, and loungy beach bars. Absolutely loved it!
From Tulum there is a vast possibility of day trips and you can chose from options of swimming in cenotes (multiple in the area) to swimming in the ocean, kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming with the turtles, seeing the pyramids, biking, and visiting other pyramids nearby.
Note: make sure you leave no trace and respect the nature and biodiversity. Wash before going onto Cenotes and limit your use of plastic! Dont use plastic straws! Also respect turtles when they are nesting. Seaweed has become a huge issue in Yucatan and it has become so due to low oxidation levels of the ocean causing algea and acidity.

Until yesterday, we had never gone to any cenotes in Mexico. Today, we are taking a jungle adventure with Selva Maya for some rock climbing, rappelling, zip lines, snorkeling in cenotes, and our first outdoor cenote! The entire day was nothing short of a spectacular adrenalin rush.
We know tons of people look for a Cancun cenote and Playa del Carmen cenotes but these TULUM Mexico cenotes were just incredible! If you’re looking for things to do near Tulum, Playa del Carmen, OR Cancun we highly recommend Selva Maya Eco Adventures for a fun jungle experience most tourists don’t know about.
This was our last full day in Tulum, Mexico and we’re a little sad to head to Playa del Carmen and leave the cenotes in Tulum behind. Swimming in cenotes has been an experience like no other we’ve had in Mexico. And the fact that we got to go snorkeling in cenotes was just a cherry on top! Hope you enjoy today’s Tulum vlog. Experience the Riviera Maya from Cancun to Tulum
One of my favorite vacation suggestions for families is the area south of Cancun, Mexico, called the Riviera Maya. This is the newer, sister area 40 minutes from Cancun and has the fantastic beach town of Playa del Carmen. Large resorts line the beach side of Highway 307 and the other side is filled with great activities including many large ecological theme parks and a gorgeous Cirque du Soleil venue. Many of the best cenotes (natural swimming whiles connected by an underground river system) are just north of Playa Del Carmen un to Tulum. Tulum is a smaller beach town with more tropical beaches and boutique hotels and retreat centers where yoga is very popular.

My wife Ying and I, and our baby Micah, traveled to Mexico with my friend Carlos and his family. I met Carlos many years ago in University in Phoenix, Arizona, and he’s originally from Sonora, in Northern Mexico. Throughout University, Carlos and I would eat Mexican food non-stop, and we dreamed of traveling in Mexico to experience more. Finally we made this trip happen!
We actually flew into Cancun, and then immediately drove down to Playa Del Carmen where we based ourselves. On our first day we decided to take a day trip to Tulum, a small town on the Riviera Maya coast, and one of the official historical port cities of the Maya.
Taquería Honorio - First things first, we started off with some breakfast tacos at a well known Mexican street food spot in Tulum. I had a mix of four different types of tacos, all of which were extraordinary, but probably the best was the lechon, the roast suckling pig. This is a must eat tacos restaurant when you’re in Tulum.
Price for my plate - 64 MXN ($3.45)
Ruins of Tulum - 70 MXN ($3.77) - One of the main attractions in Tulum are the ancient Mayan ruins. It’s a beautiful place, and what makes it so incredible are not only the ruins, but the fact that they are right up along the gorgeous turquoise Caribbean coast. It was great to walk around, even though it was packed with visitors.
Playa Paraiso - Next we drove over to Playa Paraiso, just down the beach from the Ruins of Tulum, which crystal sparkling water.
Chamico’s - By lunchtime we were all very hungry, so we drove over to a place called Chamico’s a spot I had searched out on Google maps. Just from the photos it looked like a place I needed to go, from the relaxing atmosphere to the amazing fresh seafood. It was just as good as I had imagined. The restaurant was right along the beach, breezy, and the Mexican food was amazing. We had a few plates of ceviche, fried fish, and a shrimp cocktail.
Total price (for 4) - 1,180 MXN ($63.53)
Tulum, Mexico, is a true beach paradise, and it’s an amazing place to visit in Mexico. Thank you for watching!
