How to get around Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum.
In this video I go over all the basic information needed when taking public transportation in Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum.
Taking public transportation in a foreign city can seem scary but it's truly easy and a much more affordable option. While taking taxis will go directly to your destination it will be much more expensive
When arriving at the Cancun International Airport you have three transit options to choose from.
1st - You can take the ADO bus. The ADO is a large, comfortable and hassle free way to get out of the airport. Currently it cost less then 100 pesos to get from the Cancun International Airport to downtown Cancun and just over 200 pesos to get from the Cancun International Airport to 5th Avenue (Playa Del Carmen). From there you can transfer and take the ADO bus to Tulum.
2nd - You can take a taxi. A taxi from the Cancun Airport to downtown Cancun or the Hotel Zone currently cost you 300-400 pesos per ride. Be sure to ask the locals what the current rate should be before getting into a taxi.
3rd - Booking a private shuttle. If you’re traveling in a group of 3 or more this will likely be the most affordable option. Book it before arriving.
As tourist the only two Cancun buses you need to be aware of is the R-1 and R-2 bus. They travel between the Hotel Zone, Downtown Cancun and the ferry terminals.
Now when traveling in Playa Del Carmen or Tulum taking a colectivo will be the most budget friendly option. A colectivo is a small minivan that works as a bus. The colectivo will have the final destination (and sometimes other major stops) on the front of their windshield. The colectivo that travels between Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum will stop at any point along the way, just be sure to sit near the drive and let them know where you want to get off.

These white vans, called colectivos, are mini-bus lines that service the route of the Riviera Maya- Cancun to Tulum. These are highly economical and also convenient. You can take these mini-vans from their “terminals” or flag them down on the highway. Just make sure you are in a safe and visible sport when you flag these down. Just wave your arm, and the driver will stop for you. You can also get off at any point in the highway.s
The driver, upon approaching you, will flash his lights on and off. This is to ask you if you want to ride his mini-van, as there is space available. If you wave, the driver will stop. Once hopping on, inform the driver of your desired destination.
The colectivos servicing the Cancun-Tulum route run up and down Highway 307 every 15 to 30 minutes during the day starting from 5:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. There are also other colectivos service other routes to places in the area.
There are two colectivo terminals in Playa del Carmen: one on Avenida 20, between Calle 12 and 14 and one on Avenida Juarez corner 5th Avenue.
There is usually no fixed schedule of departure, as a colectivo usually waits to be filled before it leaves the “terminal.” The maximum capacity of a colectivo is usually 10 passengers.
Tips:
Be on the lookout for your stop. Although the driver has been informed of where you want to get off, it will be better for you to tell him to stop when you have reached your desired destination.
Payment is made when you exit the colectivo.

My time in Playa del Carmen is coming to an end, and I have so many good memories to look back on. I arrived in Playa del Carmen almost 3 years ago to the day. I had travelled through from South and Central America, passed through Playa del Carmen and ended on Isla Mujeres before flying home from Cancun. What an amazing trip that was and I was determined to return. Life on the Caribbean is incredible and I knew I would not be happy returning home from a long time. After a few months back in Canada, I returned to Cancun and settled in Playa del Carmen. I learned there was much more to Playa del Carmen than just Fifth Avenue and the beaches around Playa. This was a bustling place full of opportunity and young, different people. As you often do when you are in a new place, you connect with people from back home, strangely enough.
After spending some days within Playa del Carmen, getting to know the town and the main locations, I started to venture outside of Playa del Carmen and see all of the sights. It is when you get out of the actual town of Playa del Carmen, that you see what Playa is on the map and one of the most famous tourist, resort and vacation locations in the world. It has a lot to offer. The cenotes, beaches, ruins, restaurants, small towns, and more, offers so many things to do. Enjoying my life here on the Riviera Maya, I knew that I would want to remember it more than just photos and funny stories to tell over a beer. I really wanted to document my life here in Playa del Carmen and offer some advice and maybe some motivation for people to get out and fully enjoy each day here on the Caribbean.
It was only really the final year and a half in Playa del Carmen that I started to make videos of my day trips and weekends on the Riviera Maya but I am so happy to look back at all my videos and smile with all the amazing memories I have here in Mexico. Crazy to think it is all coming to an end, but it is incredible to look back at everything I have done in a short amount of time and it is a comforting feeling to know I am not leaving anything behind. I had a great time here in Playa del Carmen, but I am very ready to leave.
Thank you for those who subscribe , comment, like, and most importantly, watch these videos. I urge everyone who visits Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya to really get out and enjoy the surrounding areas. You can sit at a pool, drink on the beach and lay in your hotel room anywhere, get out and see what makes Playa del Carmen special.
Thanks again everyone, NO REGRETS!
