Rivington Pike Bolton Drone Video
Rivington Pike Bolton is a hill summit on Winter Hill, part of the West Pennine Moors, overlooking the village of Rivington in Lancashire, England. The nearest towns are Adlington and Horwich. The Rivington Pike Bolton is a prominent local landmark which derives its name from the Old English hreof plus ing meaning the rough or rugged hill and pic, a pointed eminence. The Rivington Pike Bolton was recorded as Rovyng in 1325 and Rivenpike in about 1540. Saxton records the name as Rivenpike Hill on his 1577 map.The Rivington Pike Bolton at 1,191 feet (363 metres) high is the most westerly high point of Winter Hill in the West Pennine Moors. The Rivington Pike Bolton moorland is underlain with Carboniferous rocks, the Millstone Grit, sandstones and shales of the Lower Coal Measures which rise high above the Lancashire Plain to the west and Greater Manchester conurbation to the south. The humped shape of theRivington Pike Bolton coincides with a coal seam of the Lower Coal Measures at around 1,148 feet (350 metres) that outcropped and was mined around 1800. There is evidence of bell pits close to the summit.
The natural vegetation is characterised by areas of blanket bog, impoverished upland heath and acid grassland.
An extensive network of footpaths leads to the summit. The highest part of the route to the summit is a footpath and steps built in the 1990s to combat erosion and prevent further deterioration. From the Rivington Pike Bolton it is possible to see Blackpool Tower, the Lake District mountains, the Welsh mountains and as far as the Isle of Man on the clearest days. Rivington Pike Bolton.Rivington Pike Drone.Lever Park was officially opened to the public on the 10th October, 1911, but construction of Liverpool Castle Rivington at Coblowe on the eastern side of the Lower Rivington Reservoir overlooking Cross’ Creek wasn’t begun until 1912

Written records of 'Roun Pike' stretch back to 1280, though it is entirely feasible the Pike became part of England's integral beacon defence network over a century earlier under the instigation of the Earl of Chester after the Scottish raids of 1138. The beacon on the Pike was certainly fired in July, 1588, when the Spanish Armada had been sighted off English shores. Fifty years previously, Leland, a chronicler for Henry VIII, recorded he had passed the hill 'Faierlokke', though he astutely reported the local variation: communley the people thereabout caullith it Rivenpike.
Wood was gathered there in the early 18th century over ill-founded fears of a French invasion, and fires continued to be lit after the building of the Tower - most recently for the Coronation of King George V in 1910, then to mark the end of the First World War in 1918. It is possible to see that over many centuries Rivington Pike has rarely seen a period without human activity. Whilst the Tower has attracted visitors for nearly three hundred years and the Pike Fair for at least two hundred - with a cooling off period in the 1830s for drunken, riotous behaviour over the Easter weekend - flint chippings found on the summit suggest an earlier, prehistoric significance.
The Pike holds an annual fair every Good Friday where many brave the winds and scale the steep ascent to the summit, whilst their children roly-poly back down towards the burger vans and balloon sellers that have pitched themselves into the road around it's base. Since 1892 the annual Pike Race has also been held on Easter Saturday, attracting over three hundred runners.

Rivington Pike & Pigeon Tower
Aerial video footage & photos of Rivington Pike, and the Pigeon Tower.
Rivington Pike is a hill summit on Winter Hill, part of the West Pennine Moors, overlooking the village of Rivington in Lancashire, England. Rivington Pike was the site of one of a series of beacons spanning England as an early warning system. The beacon system was put in place by Ranulph de Blundeville, 4th Earl of Chester around 1139, following a Scottish raid in 1138.
Pigeon Tower, stands at the northwestern edge of the Terraced Gardens. Italian in style, the Tower was built in 1910 by Lord Leverhulme as part of his extensive Rivington estate. The first two floors were home to ornamental doves and pigeons, whilst at the top was a small sitting room that was used as a lookout over the boating lake, and by Lady Lever as a sewing and music room. The three floors are linked by a solid stone staircase that runs up the semi-circular spine of the building.

Rivington Pike Jubilee Beacon
AffieFilms filmed the Rivington Pike Beacon being lit for the Queens 60th Diamond Jubilee.
The Beacon was lit around 10.30 on the 4th June 2012
The AffieFilm crew filmed from Nickleton Brow, using maximum zoom. From a Sony HD Handycam mounted on a tripod.. Although slighty pixelated in places, you can at least see the Pike and the many people who traveled to the top, you can also see several lanterns lifting into the air from the Pike... No they are not U.F.O'S.
