Some AHEYM filmed footage and interactions in 2002 & 2003 in Ukraine
Sometime after the AHEYM second month-long expedition to Central, Western and Southern regions in contemporary Ukraine in May-June 2003, Jeffrey Veidlinger put together this seemingly simple, but in effect superbly cut and film montage from the sequences so masterfully shot by our friend and one of our prime cameramen -- Pawel Figurski of Łódź (at that time and now of Warsaw).
The places that can be seen include: Zolkve (Zovkva), Rovne (RIvne), Sharigrod (Sharhorod), Tulchin, and Bershed (Bershad) and Vinitse (Vinnytsia).
Sadly many, perhaps most, of the people we were so fortunate to meet and interview then, have left for ever leaving us their vivid living memory of their Yiddish childhood and early adulthood, their postwar Soviet life and their people's as well as their own Jewish fate in that part of Eastern Europe. May their memory and their memories be for a blessing and serve as a resource to recall the once thriving and burgeoning East Eruopean Jewish life, culture and life-wisdom!
Even the stones, hoses and buildings do not remain the same in the area. The footage of Shargorod and Bershed from 2002 (as our footage of Tulchin and later of Tomashpol elsewhere in AHEYM's collection) record the characteristic local Jewish architecture and street setting which in most cases entirely disappeared since then, or is rapidly disappearing without a trace from the towns -- shtetlakh -- which until the second decade decade of the 20th century were predominantly populated and animated by Yiddish-speaking Jews.

The Jewish nation is considered one of the most common ones in the world, and it has links with the history of almost every modern state. And this ancient nation lives on the territory of our country.
The first Jewish appeared in Volyn in the times of the Kievan state around the XIII century. The first official mention about their location on the territory of Volyn are dated back to 1410. Information about first registration of Jewish community in the city of Dybno ( Mlyniv region was also related to it ) appeared in 1532.
The synagogue that was built in the 1800, is preserved but currently in a really bad condition. Throughout the entire history of the city, the number of synagogues was not more than one building. During its existence the synagogue served as an educational institution and house for praying, where the Jews came every Saturday.
Starting from the late XVIII and early XIX centuries, there is a large Jewish settlement activity in the territory of Ukraine due to the increase in Jewish communities in towns and villages. The Hasidism was developed in the Jewish society. However there is no exact number of their population in the city. In general in late XIX century there were over 22,448 Jewish population (11% of the total population) in Dubno district.
The most famous representative of the Jewish community was Aaron Pearl (one of the founders and preachers of Hasidism) - philosopher and religious figure, preaching in Mlyniv. He was the first one who shouted prayers in front of Jewish community in Mlyniv.
Famous preacher Aaron Pear said l: “Life as well as prayer is serving God. And delight and joy are leading to repentance, and achieving spiritual perfection will bring Messiah.
The Jewish philosopher was buried at restorated cemetery that was destroyed in Soviet times. Its reconstruction began in the 90s of the twentieth century. Jewish expedition restored the old cemetery burial plan that coincided with the preserved documents. Then the monument was erected over the grave of philosopher and a chapel on a former cemetery.
Another extraordinary figure of the Hasidic community of Mlyniv was Shlomo Mandelkern – well-known Jewish writer and poet, translator of Pushkin poetry, history Russia and Poland to hebrew. He was an assistant of rabbi and he proclaimed his sermons in Hebrew and Russian. He died in 1902 and has not finished his work related to comparison of characteristics of different variants of biblical texts.
Currently there is no Jewish communities in Mlyniv. This happenned due to the following factors. After the establishment of Nazi government in Germany in 1933 mass arrests of Jews had occurred, special agencies of violence and terror were created. In general more than 3 millio n people were repressed. Comunists, socialists and other antinazi parties were destroyed because of political views, other people suffered because of their nationality and color of skin.
The Jews, less than 1% of population of Germany, were not the main enemies of dictatorship. On the territory of Mlyniv region , the occupation by Germans lasted from 1940 till 1945. This was the period of the biggest tragedy in the life of every Jew who lived in Mlyniv region. At that period even ordinary movement of Jews around the city was punished by death. In 1941 the hetto fenced with wooden panels and barbed wire was created in Mlyniv. Only jewish homes were fenced. Everyday Jews had to work hard but without strict supervision, everybody had a right to move around freely and even leave the territory. But most of those people in hetto were doomed. Going back to Volyn, to small city of Mlyniv in Rivne region, according to the words of witnesses that survived the mass shooting of Jews had been executed in 1942. Almost entire Jewish community died (from 600 to 800 people) and now the only things that reminds of this tragic event are bones of victims covered with earth. The tragic consequences of the period. Holocaust.
The mass pilgrimage of communities to America and other states began after these tragic events.
Today, there is a massive pilgrimage to the Hasidic Jewish graves and memorial sites of their leaders in Ukraine. This is associated with the celebration of Rosh Hashanah (the New Year according to the Jewish calendar) in September. In particular they are coming to Mlyniv to visit the grave of the leader of the Hasidic philosopher Aaron Pearl, and they earnestly cry to God and their enlightener. The restoration of synagogue is also planned by Jewish Hasidic community.
Thank you for attention.
