The 52 Tunnels Trail, La Strada delle 52 Gallerie, Monte Pasubio
As WW1 dragged on in 1917, the Italian Army cut a long, narrow and steep road into the South face of Monte Forni, one of the Pasubio Massif peaks. Troup movements and protection plus dominance of the strategically important valley below were the reasons for such a challenging undertaking.
Today the trail can be hiked enjoying the magnificent views. The horrible feeling of what it must have been like for those young soldiers to be there to kill and be killed is however a constant reminder of the foolishness of wars, all of them.
Hiking the Delle 52 Gallerie, Italy (The 52 Tunnels)
Dave Ruiter and friends hike the Italian pre-Alpine Road of the 1st Brigade, also known as the 52 Tunnels. This route was constructed in a mere ten months by the Italian Army in 1917 (WWI). Its completion was defined as an enterprise of giants, that no other work equals along the entire European front, a miracle of courage and work of unequalled greatness:, and a significant marvel in the grandeur of military engineering.

The Strada delle 52 Gallerie (Road of 52 tunnels) (or Strada della Prima Armata – Road of the First Army) is a military mule road built during World War I on the massif Pasubio in Veneto, Italy.
The road winds between Bocchetta Campiglia (1,216 m) and the Porte del Pasubio (1,934 m) crossing the southern slope of the mountain, outside of the range of Austro-Hungarian artillery, with its spires, deep canyons and sheer rock faces.
It is 6,555 meters long, of which 2,280 are divided into 52 tunnels excavated from the rock, each tunnel is numbered and characterized by a particular name. The minimum width of 2.20 m was originally intended to allow the transit of two mules with their baggage.
The impressive N. 20 is carved out of a rock tower, and to overcome the difference in height, twists around itself like a corkscrew. Tunnels 41st through 45th runs below the Passo Fontana d'Oro (1,875 m). On leaving the 47th, the highest point of the road (2,000 m), there is a magnificent panorama.

Road of 52 Tunnels - History
The Strada delle 52 Gallerie (Road of 52 Tunnels), also known as the 52 Tunnel Road, or Strada della Prima Armata (Road of the First Army) is a military mule road built during World War I on the Pasubio massif in Veneto, Italy.
The road winds between Bocchetta Campiglia (3,990 ft) and the Porte del Pasubio (6,345 ft) crossing the southern slope of the mountain with its spires, deep canyons and sheer rock faces. It is 6,555 meters long, of which 2,280 are divided into 52 tunnels excavated from the rock, each tunnel is numbered and characterized by a particular name.
During the First World War the front line between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces ran through the Dolomites. Monte Pasubio was a crucial stronghold for the Italians. They had to hold the mountain, but their supply lines to the mountain were being shelled and were subject to avalanches. On one day, December 13th, 1916, known as 'White Friday', 10,000 soldiers were killed by avalanches in the Dolomites. The answer to the Italian Army's problems was the Strada delle 52 Gallerie.
Work began on February 6, 1917 and was concluded in November 1917. The road was produced by the 33rd Company of the Italian Army with the help of six hundred workers.
and under the guidance of Lieutenant Joseph Zappa.
Its implementation was of great strategic importance because it allowed communication and transfer of supplies from the base to the summit area of Mt. Pasubio. Key aspects of the road include year round access, located outside of enemy artillery range and accessible by mule.
Before the Road of 52 Tunnels the Itialian army used the Strada degli Scarubbi. This road had many problems. First off, it was within the range of the Austrian guns. This road was only accessible with motorized vehicles and only during the summer. They needed a road year round. The Road of 52 Tunnels solved these problems.
Today it’s a historic collection of paths in the Dolomites and demonstrates to the ingenuity and determination of the Italian Army.
This video has pictures of all 52 tunnels.
