The Carretera Austral is a 1200km long road in the south of Chile which connects the most remote areas of the country. The ruta 7 is a paradise for adventure seekers as it is a mostly unpaved road which brings you to the lesser known parts of Patagonia in the stunning Los Lagos and Aysen Region.
Our plan was to get from Puerto Montt till Villa O’Higgins by thumb to get in touch with locals and fellow adventurers along the way. After finishing this adventure in the last episode we wanted to get to El Chaltén in Argentina with a visit to the O’Higgins Glacier and an overnight stay at the Farm Candelario Mancilla.
To do the border crossing from Villa O’Higgins to El Chaltén one first needs to take a boat to cross the O’Higgins lake and get to Candelario Mancilla on the other side. We opted in for the additional boat excursion to see the O’Higgins Glacier and have some whisky with ice from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.
The next stretch we needed to hike for 22km to Laguna del Desierto where we took another boat to cross over to the southern shore where we spend the night camping before hitchhiking the remaining 37km to El Chaltén.
El Chaltén is the trekking capital of Argentina and one of the best spots for hiking and climbing in Patagonia. From the several hiking options in this area we chose the popular hike to Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre first before hiking to Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres on another dayhike.
This part of the trip was executed within 1week by using altogether 2 boat, 1 bus and one car - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in el Chalten:
- O'Higgins Glacier / Bernardo O’Higgins National Park
- Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Candelario Mancilla
- Villa O'Higgins
- O’Higgins Lake / Lago O’Higgins or Lago San Martin
- Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre
- Monte Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres / laguna sucia
- Lago del Desierto
- El Chalten
Boat company at Lago O’Higgins (transfer Candelario Mancilla & O’Higgins Glacier):
I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 6 weeks with you. In the next episode we will hike the Huemul Circuit in El Chalten, Argentina and meet impressive characters along the way.
The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.
Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.

Chalten: what you need to know & hiking Fitzroy
I spent 10 days in Chalten before being able to hike Fitzroy, so here is my take on this ''off the beaten path'' hiking destination in Patagonia. It's a young and small town in Argentina and these are the key things to know before you go.
I also take you guys along as we do the one must do hike here to Lago de los Tres, which offered a great challenge and some incredible views.

Chasing Waterfalls in EL CHALTEN!! (Argentina Travel VLOG | 341)
22 November 2019 - Day 92 - El Chalten | 341
Today we wake up on the bus after having travelled 1550km over the last 24hrs and arrive at 7:30am in the town of El Chaltèn! Surprisingly quite a comfortable sleep and didn’t actually feel that long! ????????
We check into our hostel at Rancho Grande and head out for the afternoon for a quick 3.5km hike to Chorillo del Salto Waterfall! We leave town and make our way north towards the valley and traverse our way around the mountains until we hear the sounds of rushing water. We take Mav up for a spin and flew her high above behind the waterfall. Lying in the distance was the mighty Mt. Fitz Roy, high up in the sky, glowing against the sunset like some far away land. It was absolutely breathtaking!! ????????☁️????
A decent warmup for our first day here, it’s going to be a fun, adventure packed few days here in our first town in Patagonia! ????????

Photographing The Secret Waterfall in El Chalten, Argentina
We started the day shooting the secret waterfall in El Chalten, Argentina
The Camera Greg forgot:
Greg's Channel:
It was so good to get off and start hiking here in El Chalten, Argentina. This is one of the few places in South America I have yet to be, so I've been keen to explore this area for a while now. We started out the vlog here in Patagonia by heading to a place a lot of photographers like to refer to as the secret waterfall. Of course, it's not a secret at all. Nearly every photographer who comes to El Chalten shoots it at some point.
We hiked out of town to get to the waterfall for sunrise. It was basically the perfect frame. You get the waterfall tumbling in front of Fitzroy Mountain which looks nothing short of impressive in the sunrise light.
After photographing the waterfall in front of Fitzroy, we push on towards our campsite at the base of Fitzroy.
Of course, nothing can go smoothly. Greg actually completely forgot his Panasonic GH5 battery back at the car. So, he had to make the hike all the way back to El Chalten. Essentially, he had to hike over 25km today.
After setting up camp, I grabbed some lunch and waited for Greg to come back. Once he got back, we set out on a wander out to Piedras Blancas, another one of the great viewpoints in the Fitzroy area here in El Chalten.
We also played around a bit with impressions. I'm sure you've never heard a worse impression that Greg's Christopher Walken impression.
Tomorrow, we continue vlogging here in El Chalten as we make our way through a wind storm to get to Torres Base. Stay tuned for more Patagonia vlogs.
HIKING PATAGONIA: MOUNT FITZ ROY: EL CHALTÉN, ARGENTINA
Our second day in El Chaltén!
This time we hiked the Laguna de Los tres to see mount Fitz Roy.
This trail is said to be the most challenging due to the extreme incline on the last 30 minutes of the hike.
This hike is recommended only for those who are in good physical condition.
This was the hardest hike we have ever done but the view along the way, made it all worth it.
Our favourite part was the flowing river where we took a break and got some fresh Patagonian water to refill our water bottle.
Yes, the water is safe to drink!
The strenuous hike was a pain but once you see the blue laguna at the summit of Cerro Fitz Roy, it was the best feeling ever!
Total hike was 9 hours (5 up, and 4 to go back to town).
Don't forget to see another video of us hiking the Laguna Torre to see Cerro Torre:

El Chalten: On the Path to Fitzroy
We continue our journey through Patagonia. From El Calafate we took a 3 hour bus ride to El Chalten, still within Parque Nacional Los Glacieres. A beautiful spot from which to do some hiking in the Andes. Although we took one of the shorter hiking paths, we were nonetheless rewarded with some beautiful views of Fitzroy

Huffington Post:
Hiking Trails in El Chalten, Argentina and the small hike or trek to the waterfall outside of El Chalten, Argentina called Chorrillo del Salto.
Arriving in the little town of El Chalten in the south of Argentina I felt the remoteness of Patagonia. Not even trees grow up on the high peaks down here, it is simply too unhospitable. But that is one of the reasons that El Chalten and the hiking in the area is so special and makes Patagonia that place that you have to sacrifice to get to.
On my first day in El Chalten Argentina, I was existing off just a few hours of bus sleep so I decided to power through and not nap, simply put down a few coffees and do a modest hike. The Chorrillo Del Salto hike to the waterfall was a perfect fit.
Each road in El Chalten that leaves the town, ends in a trail that leads up some mountain, through some valley or to some glacier. This El Chalten hikes leads to a beautiful waterfall called Chorrillo del Salto just 1 hour hiking time outside of the town center.
The hike is very simple, short, and very little incline and meanders its way through the glacier basin just outside of El Chalten.
First hike in El Chalten in the books and I am very excited for the other hikes to come in this little Patagonia town. Make sure to subscribe as I will be hiking the Fitz Roy peak, as well as Laguna Torre, the most popular hikes in El Chalten.

Must do hike in El Chalten! - MT FITZ ROY!!! (Argentina Travel VLOG | 342)
23 November 2019 - Day 93 - El Chalten | 342
El Chalten, the smoky mountain, the hiking capital of the world, and today we embark on one of Patagonia’s most popular hikes - Mt. Fitz Roy!! A decent 11km hike from town, and a 22km round trip, today is set to be one massive day!! ????????????
We leave the hostel at a relatively late time of 10:30am and make our way through the mountains towards the jagged cliffs afar. We pass through all kinds of scenery from traversing though forests to open meadows. We arrive at our destination at 2:30pm at Lago de los Tres, just at the base of Fitz Roy and it was an incredible sight to see. As we had lunch, the skies began to clear and the sun turned up to the party! ????☀️
This town got it’s name as the ‘smoky mountain’ due to past belief Fitz Roy was a volcano due to the ‘smoke’ that came from behind it. And even to this day we witnessed the clouds pass through like it was smoke! One of the best shows of nature I’ve seen! But that’s not all, the profile of these jagged cliffs is also where the symbol of the Patagonian Logo was taken from! That’s when you known you’ve defiantly made it to Patagonia when you’re standing right in front of it’s logo! ????????
We smash it back into town in 3.5hrs at exactly 8pm after a very long 27km in total day!! Damn I was buggered, but it was one of my favourite treks down here in Patagonia thus far and is certainly a must do for anyone travelling through this part of the world!! ????????????
