With a seriously large amount of travel coming up to some dense urban metropolises such as LA, New York, Toronto and Tokyo; we realised our window of opportunity to visit Scotland was very slim before the days get colder and darker.
Embarrassingly, neither Elly or I had ever been to Scotland. Yet we've been all the way around the other side of the world to the far reaches of New Zealand... We wanted to change that and make the quick hop up from London to experience some of the best nature the UK has to offer.
Our 2-day road trip consisted of a loop from Edinburgh into the Highlands via Loch Lomond, to Loch Ness, Glenfinnan and the Isle of Skye, before journeying back towards Edinburgh. I wanted to make a travel vlog similar to how this channel used to look a couple of years ago, featuring more about the journey and our overall experience rather than a segment of a particular photography day. I really enjoyed making it and look forward to part 2 coming in the next few days!
P.S. A note on the drone footage quality: After reviewing the footage from this trip, I noticed a lot of the watercolour effect happening. I've since adjusted from -1 sharpening to +1 sharpening on my Mavic Pro in an attempt to disable to noise reduction algorithm causing the bad quality picture. Hopefully it's all good for the next time I use my drone!

Check your local public television station for this Rick Steves’ Europe episode or watch it on We'll begin on the tranquil Isle of Iona, where Christianity first reached the shores of Scotland. Then we'll visit another of the Inner Hebrides, road-tripping across the Isle of Skye, where we'll explore Iron Age forts, peat fields, a venerable distillery, thatched crofter huts, and the dramatic Trotternish Peninsula. Finally, we'll sail to Orkney — more Nordic than Celtic — with its stony remnants of a thriving Iron Age civilization and evocative reminders of the 20th-century wartime harbor at Scapa Flow.

A Guide To Island Hopping in Scotland
Island hopping is a great way to experience the offshore gems and secret spots that Scotland has to offer – whether you have a week or a weekend to spend here, the islands won’t disappoint.
Scotland is famed for its staggering mountains, beautiful lochs, and a variety of gems to explore, but, did you know that our islands are magical and otherworldly? Scotland has over 790 islands, each unique in their own way. With incredible natural beauty, dramatic seascapes and magical atmosphere, you’ll never want to leave island life behind.
Our islands are split into a few groups – Inner Hebrides, Outer Hebrides, Shetland, and Orkney.
Navigating across these bucket list-worthy islands is easier than you may think. Regular ferry connections run from the mainland to the islands on the west and north coasts of Scotland, as well as between the islands themselves. Some ferries allow you to take your car so you can continue exploring when you’re there.
You can even fly to various islands from the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness. Or why not fly from island-to-island to save time travelling?
Our islands have more to show than you can fit into a day – so why not stay over? There’s plenty of accommodation options on offer – from cosy cottages on the waterfront and eco-friendly self-catering lodges, to quaint campsites, caravans and B&Bs – but make sure you book ahead!
Venture to the Inner Hebrides if you want to explore places seen in blockbuster films, such as Prometheus, Snow White & The Huntsman, and Flash Gordon, or if you’re up for a scenic sailing tour. If magical lands filled with ancient history take your fancy, then head to Orkney!
The Isle of Mull is the perfect location to spot a variety of wildlife, including eagles soaring overhead, and head to Tobermory to see the colourful houses and buildings as well as trying some fresh seafood in one of the local pubs. Or, if you want to sample a dram or two of whisky then head to the Isle of Islay where you can choose from eight distilleries.
On the west coast, enjoy the untouched beauty of the Isle of Jura, let your inner adventurer out and try windsurfing on the Isle of Tiree, or uncover the turbulent history at the ancient abbey on the Isle of Iona.
If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, the waters off the Isle of Coll are a great place to spot giant basking sharks, and even if you’ve never been there, you’re probably already familiar with Skye – it’s one of the most photographed, and talked about, of the Scottish islands.
The Outer Hebrides are perfect if you’re looking for crystal clear waters and golden sandy beaches. Or hop further afield to Orkney and Shetland to tick these magical places off your bucket list. From remnants of ancient civilisations, the chance to spot the Northern Lights during the darker winter months, and the cries of thousands of seabirds, to lively folk music sessions and ferocious Viking culture – there’s an abundance of things to keep you busy!
Why not follow some of our ready-made itineraries, or plan one of your own to make the most out of your island adventure?

We visit the Weeping Glen of Glencoe, bustling Inverness, and the battlefield at Culloden. SCOTLAND in motion - a timelapse film (Scottish Highlands - Isle of Skye, Glencoe, Glenfinnan)
Experience a beautiful timelapse journey through the amazing landscapes of Scotland.
In this film about the Scottish Highlands you will experience places like Glencoe, The Storr, Quiraing, Fairy Pools and many other places on the Isle of Skye.
The shots are made in May 2019 where I had the pleasure to travel around the Scottish Highlands for two weeks. I had the pleasure to experience the spectacular Isle of Skye with a sunrise at the Storr, a long hike and lot of mist at the Quiraing and the beautiful Fairy Pools. In Glencoe I experienced the lakes Glencoe Lochan and Lochan Urr, Glen Etive with amazing still water, had an interesting and demanding climb to the top of Ben Nevis which is the highest mountain in UK and finally made a timelapse at the Glenfinnan Viaduct with the steam train known from Harry Potter.

FILM LOCATIONS IN SCOTLAND in motion
0:00 Eilean Donan Castle. Shot at sunrise. The rising and falling tide reveals that the water here is connected to the sea.
0:14 The Storr. View over the Isle of Skye.
0:18 Elgol. View to the mountains from the harbour.
0:23 Quiraing. The wind-blasted tree is a particular favourite of photographers.
0:28 Quiraing. The walk is a 7 km circuit with an ascent of 374 meters. Allow approximately 3 - 4 hours for this hike.
0:32 The Fairy Glen. The Fairy Glen is one of the Isle of Skye's most enchanting attractions. It is a delightful miniature landscape of grassy, cone-shaped hills.
0:37 Ben Nevis. The view from half way to the top. The trip to the top and back is 17 km and takes 7 to 9 hours. There is 1352 metres of ascent. Be very careful in misty weather and bring a map since the route is not very clearly marked.
0:42 Quiraing. Misty weather is not unusually in the Highlands.
1:05 Fairy Pools. Beautiful rock pools of crystal clear spring water fed by a series of waterfalls from the Cuillin Mountains.
1:15 The Storr. Sunrise from the top with view over the Isle of Skye and to the Old Man of Storr.
1:28 The Storr. The view after a short walk towards the top. The round trip is about 4.5km and 288 metres of ascent. It takes about 2 hours to walk.
1:37 Buachaille Etive Mòr. Pyramidal formed mountain at the head of Glen Etive. Shot in the morning from the Buachaille Etive Mòr Waterfalls.
1:41 Glencoe Lochan. Beautiful waymarked trails through ornamental woodland. The picturesque and serene woods contrasts with the wild and dramatic mountains.

1:50 Lochan Urr, Glen Etive. Beautiful small loch. The two mountains in the background are Buachaille Etive Mor and Buachaille Etive Beag.
1:58 Skyfall scene. This location is know from the James Bond movie Skyfall (2012). But instead of shooting towards Loch Etive I have made this timelapse towards south.
2:07 Mountains at Loch Lochy
2:12 Mountains at Lochan na h-Achlaise
2:16 Glenfinnan Viaduct. The viaduct is features in several of the Harry Potter movies.
2:25 Portree. The capital town on the Isle of Skye. I have here shot the rising tide which is over 3 meters.
2:33 Eilean Donan Castle. The same castle as the first shot in the film. Here it is shot at sunset from the hill.

Road Trip: Scottish Highlands in Winter Snow (7 Days in Scotland)
Road Trip in the Scottish Highlands during Winter Snow in Scotland full itinerary here We arrived in mid-January during yellow and amber weather warnings when the mountains are blanketed in extremely thick snow. Our road trip through the Scottish Highlands begins with the crossing from Belfast to Cairnryan with Stenaline ( when we continue on to Loch Lomond. The snow filled road trip then begins the next day as we continue to Glen Coe through the Scottish Highlands, and from there we cross east to west with a night in Pitlochry passing Loch Tay. Then it is north to the Cairngorms and Aviemore, famous for its ski resorts, and pine forests. Onwards we travel to Loch Ness, in passing, as we continue to the Isle of Skye and the far north east corners of Scotland. Catching amazing winter and snow filled scenery along the way. From the Isle of Skye we then return to the Glen Coe area, staying at Fort William beneath the Nevis Range, Scotland's tallest mountain. Then from Fort William we exit the highlands with a night near Saint Andrews and not far from Dundee.
