Romanian girls trafficked into Europe's sex industry for generations
In the summer of 2015 the Thomson Reuters Foundation met 17-year-old Maya, in a small town in rural Romania. A bright and articulate teenager, Maya shared her experiences of being trafficked into sex work in the city by her boyfriend.
Her story is not uncommon, due to widespread poverty in rural Romania many young people see the sex industry as the best way to make a living.
Through the Nightingales project, an NGO in Romania that helps young people at risk of being trafficked, we met many girls determined to have a different future. Through interviews with Maya’s sisters and those closest to her, this film highlights the difficult choices that fuel the trafficking of young women in Romania.
At the Thomson Reuters Foundation we act to promote socio-economic progress and the rule of law worldwide. We play a leading role in the fight against human trafficking. We use the skills, values, and expertise of Thomson Reuters to run programmes that trigger real change and empower people around the world. We tackle global issues. We achieve lasting impact.

Old Klezmer dance music - Romanian Orchestra, 1912
Zu di akufes - Jewrejskij taniec (Jewish Dance) - Rumunskij Orkiestr pod upr. kapelmeistra W.Bielfa, Bucuresti (Romanian Orchestra directed by W.Bielf from Bucharest) Syrena Grand Rekord 1912 (Polish, accoustic recording)
NOTE: Here's one more record from the Jewish series recorded by Syrena Grand Record in years 1912-14 in Warsaw (in Syrena recording studio) as well as in Sankt Petersburg, Russia where until outbreak of 1st World War Syrena Records had its branch. Enormous records sales market in Tzarist Russia guaranteed Julian Feigenbaum -- who was founder of Syrena Records in Warsaw in 1908, and remained director of it until its liquidation by the Germans, in September 1939 -- the most profitable contracts. Thanks to a Jewishseries a lot of otherwise forgotten singers and actors from the Jewish theatres of Warsaw and of Sankt Petersburg (in that number, such future star of the Broadway vadeuville, like Aron Lebiedev, see ) were immortalised and also some theatrical shows or vadeuville plays were almost completely recorded (e.g. Jewish operetta Szir Harashirim performed in Warsaw in 1912 see ).
W. Bielf's Romanian Orchestra is, in fact, a klezmer band from Bucharest directed by a very good, as it seems, conductor (his bio is unavailable and his full name, uncredited). In that time, they recorded for Syrena dozens of sides with mostly Jewish klezmer motifs but also with Bulgarian, Moldovian, Ukrainian etc. dances and folkloristic pieces.
In the slideshow presented are some views of the South-Eastern region of pre-war Poland, where klezmer music -- strongly influenced by the Ukrainian, Hungarian Gypsies' and Carpathian folklores - had its roots. Before 1939 that area was called Podole (Podolya) and was the farthest south-eastern part of pre-war Poland (Polskie Kresy Wschodnie, in English: Polish Eastern Borderland). After 2nd WW that geographical region was en grosse incorporated into Stalinist Russia where it remained until 1989 - and in time of that Soviet occupation, being constattly destroyed and cleansed off its folkloristic and spiritual identity). Now, after restoration of the independent Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania (which formerly were Soviet republics) Podole belongs to Western Ukraine. In times we are talking about, that region was a meeting spot of four borders (Poland, Russia, Hungary and Romania) and many cultures (Jewish, Polish, Ukrainian, Hungarian and Romanian) -- which, for many centuries were interwining and saturating each other in that melting pot, until outbreak of the 2nd WW put an end to that fascinating cultural symbiosis.

Darwaza - Gateway to the Taj Mahal
The Gateway to the Taj Mahal is a unique piece of architecture in itself and separates the gardens from the forecourt. Rising approximately 100 feet and with a width of 150 feet, this red sandstone building is of three stories, and is adorned with calligraphy the noblest craft of the day. The gateway is an atmospheric transition point between the bustling world outside and the tranquil ambiance within the grounds of the Taj Mahal. It both protects the Taj from predators, yet invites visitors to enter the garden of Paradise. The imposing brass door is not the original which was studded with silver rupees, and was stolen by rebels in 1764.
The first of many Arabic inscriptions in a calligraphic scheme guided specifically by Qur'anic quotations appears around the south door of the gateway. The calligrapher, Amanat Khan has used the tromp l'oeil effect. This involves the gradual enlarging of the letters and their spacing as they snake around the form of the arch. The result is seemingly consistent dimensions as you read the holy lettering from the ground. Crowning the gateway are twenty two small ornamental chhatris and these are placed in two lines of eleven above the main portal. In each of the four corners are larger kiosks, all of which echo the overall design of the Taj Mahal complex.
The Taj Mahal is a white Marble mausoleum located in Agra, India. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage.
Taj Mahal is the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Turkish and Indian architectural styles.
In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the white domed marble mausoleum is the most familiar component of the Taj Mahal, it is actually an integrated complex of structures. The construction began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, employing thousands of artisans and craftsmen. The construction of the Taj Mahal was entrusted to a board of architects under imperial supervision, including Abd ul-Karim Ma'mur Khan, Makramat Khan, and Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. Lahauri is generally considered to be the principal designer.
