Christian and I drove from Wanaka to Mount Aspiring National Park to hike Rob Roy's Glacier Track. The views were incredible.

HOW TO DO IT YOURSELF:
Rob Roy's Glacier track departs from Raspberry Flat Car Park in Mount Aspiring National Park. An hour drive from Wanaka.
The upper lookout hike (what we did) is around a 3-4 hour return walk.
It is mostly an incline to the upper lookout but not intense. Suitable for those with low-moderate fitness levels.

Rob Roy Glacier & Roy's Peak - Living a Kiwi Life - Ep. 56
Wanaka has no shortage of awesomeness and Rob Roy Glacier & Roy’s Peak are definitely high on the list. Both hikes are relatively easy and very accessible. With New Zealand and Wanaka’s booming popularity you will find a lot of people fighting for parking at Roy’s Peak though. Try and do it in off-hours. Rob Roy Glacier is in Mt Aspiring National Park and is a bit of a drive. Make sure to pack a lunch so you can wait for chunks of glacier to brake off and come tumbling down the cliff.

In this vlog we check out Mt Aspiring National Park near Wanaka, New Zealand and take on some of the best short walks in the park. We go about half way up the Cascade Saddle Route, spent a night at Aspiring Hut and finally completed the Rob Roy Glacier Walk.

This track offers an easy route into a dramatic alpine landscape
that includes snowfields, glaciers, sheer rock cliffs and waterfalls.
About 15 minutes from the Raspberry Flat car park, cross a swing bridge across the West #Matukituki_River.
The track climbs through a small gorge into beech forest, then into alpine vegetation at the head of the valley, with good views of the Rob Roy Glacier.
The track starts at the #Raspberry_Creek_car_park, 54 km west of Wanaka on the Wanaka-Mount Aspiring Road. The last 30 km are unsealed. The last 10 km is a fine weather road only and subject to washouts and flooded creeks that can be impassable – check road conditions before you leave.

Highest elevation: 2,644 m
Lowest elevation: 1,500 m
The drive takes about an hour.
Swing bridges: There's a limit to the number people allowed on the swing bridges at any one time – be prepared to wait at each end if numbers allowed have been reached.
Private property: This track crosses private land. Respect the landowner's livestock and property. Stay on the marked track until you reach the conservation land, leave gates as you find them and use stiles where provided.

Roys Peak Hike Track | Wanaka | New Zealand
Roys Peak hiking track above Wanaka near Queenstown, New Zealand is a tourist must-do, especially in winter or get up early to catch a Roys Peak sunrise.
It took two passionate North Island kiwis only 2 hours to the top (though allow 3hrs up) due to taking a few short cuts to complete a stunningly scenic round trip in just under three hours. A quick and fun video so enjoy.

Roy's Peak Hike is not for the feint hearted. If you're wondering how long Roys Peak is, it's a serious hike but the views of Lake Wanaka are worth the effort. It was one of the best New Zealand South Island hikes I did. There is some amazing scenery all around but this hike gives you the best of New Zealand South Island. Mountains, lakes, greens and blues. It's no wonder it is one of the most popular instagram spots in New Zealand.
I managed it in abut 4 hours but it could easily take a lot longer, especially if the weather conditions were not as good.

Rob Roy's Glacier Track
The Rob Roy Glacier Track near Wanaka. 3-4hr round trip, steep climb at times with parts of the track subject to weather due to slips and landslides. Great view from the upper lookout, well worth the climb. Be patient and quiet and you might sight an avalanche or two as icefalls are frequent.

The Rob Roy Track was probably the hardest hike we did besides the Fox Glacier one. And yes, it is named after that Rob Roy.
