Places to see in ( Riva Del Garda - Italy ) Rocca di Riva
La Rocca di Riva is a medieval fortress located in the town of Riva del Garda in the province of Trento . It is located on an artificial island on the shore of Lake Garda. The fortress was built at the behest of the prince bishop of Trento Altemanno in 1124 to defend the port of the city, a strategic point for trade to and from Trentino.
In the fourteenth century, after the conquest of the city by the Scaligeri , the fortress was renovated and expanded following the solutions already built for the fortresses of Lazise , Sirmione and Peschiera , including the possibility of direct access from the lake and the isolation from the mainland through ditches. Passed under the control of the Venetians, the fortress was at the center of the clashes with the Visconti and was repeatedly plundered.
In 1516 Riva was conquered by the emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg . With the return under Hapsburg domination, the military importance of the Rocca faded and was then used as a residence of the court of the bishop's principality of Trento. In the seventeenth century Gianangelo Madruzzo restructured it to house his wife Alfonsina Gonzaga from Novellara.
In the nineteenth century the fortress was transformed into an army barracks as part of the project to strengthen the border between the Empire of Austria and Italy. Important works were carried out such as the lowering of the corner towers and the rebuilding of all the interiors. In the fifties of the twentieth century within the Rocca was established the civic museum of Riva that still has its headquarters.

Places to see in ( Riva Del Garda - Italy )
Riva del Garda is a resort in northern Italy, on Lake Garda’s northern shore. Strong winds make it a popular windsurfing destination. In a former fortress, MAG Museo Alto Garda has archaeology and history displays, plus a picture gallery with works from the 15th to 19th centuries. Nearby, the medieval Torre Apponale belfry offers lake views. Santa Maria Inviolata is a baroque church with frescoes and stucco works. Riva del Garda is a bustling Italian town which doubles as a tourist resort, located at the northern end of Lake Garda. This is the dramatic end of the lake, with mountains rising on either side, and Riva sits comfortably on the shore, with a backdrop of lake, valley and hills. Until the lakeside road was constructed, Riva was an important port for communications along the lake's length.
Riva has a town museum (Museo Civico) housed in its moated lakeshore castle (or fortress), the Rocca. The museum contains historical exhibits, paintings and also temporary exhibitions, which can be interesting. Alongside this sturdy fortress is a pleasant leafy park. A little tourist 'train' (trenino) starts here and does a very brief circuit of the town for those seeking more entertainment (it was full of merry pensioners when it passed). One of Riva's most striking buildings is the Torre Apponale, a tall clock-tower which dates to the thirteenth century. It looks down on Piazza III Novembre, the heart of town.
The northern end of the lake is incredibly popular with windsurfers, who take advantage of the strong wind systems caused by the mountains and water. Torbole, just along the lakeshore from Riva, is the principal base for windsurfing. In Riva it is possible to hire boats, or, for a less strenuous way of enjoying the water, there is a long beach suitable for sunbathing and swimming. Walkers can enjoy easy walks around town - such as the stroll along the lake towards Torbole - or longer hikes in the mountains around.
The Museo Civico is located in the Rocca, a medieval fortress with quadrangular bastions, placed on the lake, bounded by a canal with drawbridge. It was the fortress of the noble family Scaligeri (1124), who became the Lords of Verona. It was rebuilt several times and it was used by the Austrians as barracks in the 18th century. It is frequently the seat of cultural activities, especially during the summer months. The medieval Torre Apponale was is a medieval tower first mentioned in 1273, but probably older. It belonged to the first fortress of Riva, that no longer exists. Modifications were made in 1555 and it was raised to 34 metres (112 ft). The Piazza III Novembre is situated between the tower and the harbour. The city hall comprises the Palazzo Pretorio from 1375 (the former cantonal courthouse) and the Palazzo del Provveditore (the governor's palace), built between 1472 and 1485.
The city gates Porta San Marco (11th century), built by the Venetians, and Porta San Michele (13th century), at the Piazza Cavour, are remnants of the medieval city walls. The Porta San Michele has a small battlemented belfry for the parochial church of Maria Assunta. This church was originally a romanesque-gothic building from the 14th century (attested by a medieval relief at its southern side), but was rebuilt in baroque style in 1728. It has a single nave and nine baroque altars. The altarpieces were made by local artists, such as Ignazio Martino Oliari da Riva, Giuseppe Craffonara da Riva and Giovanni Caliari da Verona. The fresco in the dome is by the baroque painter Giuseppe Alberti (1664–1730).
The church Chiesa dell'Inviolata, dominating the Largo Marconi, is considered among the most beautiful baroque churches in Trentino. It is an octagonal building with the belfry next to it. It contains the altarpieces San Carlo Borromeo and San Gerolamo by the Mannerist painter Palma il Giovane. In the middle of the octagonal dome is a Baroque fresco The coronation of Maria in Heaven. Places of geological interest in the vicinity include Tenno Lake, Lago di Ledro (with its paleoethnographic museum), and the Varone falls.

The main office of the MAG Museum Alto Garda is located in Riva del Garda , in Piazza Cesare Battisti 3 / a, housed in the Rocca, and a second important section of the Museum, dedicated to painting, is in Arco , at the Galleria Civica G. Segantini , in via Segantini 9, in the Palazzo dei Panni. The museum is part of the Trentino Grande Guerra network.
La Rocca is a fortress that dates back to the 12th century, with 4 corner towers and a keep. In later times it was extended by the Scaligeri , the Venetians and the bishops of Trento , in particular by Bernardo Clesio . It was used as a barracks during the period of the Austrian domination , and, in 1852 , the towers were reduced in height, at the level of the roofs. In the courtyard there are reproductions of the coats of arms of the most important cities of Trentino and, under a portico, there are tombstones that date back to Roman and medieval times. In the last two decades of the last century, the Office for Monumental and Architectural Heritage of the province of Trentohas made an important restoration of the Rocca in order to better host first the Civic Museum and now the MAG.
Currently the museum path is developed through:
An art gallery, which shows various aspects of the culture of the Garda border during the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries. There are, among others, works by Pietro Ricchi , Vincenzo Vela , Francesco Hayez and the FV monogrammist .
A section of History, housed in the upper part of the Fortress, in the attic, illustrates the history of the Basso Sarca from prehistory to the Second World War . It is interesting to discover the past of Riva del Garda and the whole of the Lower Sarca, retrace the various dominations that occurred on the territory until the golden age that saw Riva del Garda important tourist destination for famous guests, such as Thomas Mann and Franz Kafka .
A section of Archeology, with many important findings from specific research on the territory. The chronological arch involved is between the Middle Paleolithic (starting from 120,000 BC) and the late Middle Ages (up to the VIII century AD). Important are the stele statues that date back to the Copper Age .
The Palazzo dei Panni di Arco was built at the end of the seventeenth century by Giambattista d'Arco. Its facade has different masks to each window, and owes its name to the period during which it housed a woolen weave. The building houses the G. Segantini Civic Gallery. The Gallery keeps in its halls a permanent space dedicated to the divisionist painter Giovanni Segantini , and you can admire paintings, graphic works and historical documents about the artist. Sirmione - Il Castello Scaligero - Die mittelalterliche Burg - The Medieval Castle
Rocca Scaligera, Sirmione, Brescia, Lombardy, Italy, Europe
The scaligero castle of Sirmione is a scaligera fortress, a point of access to the historic center of Sirmione. It is one of the most complete and best preserved castles in Italy, as well as a rare example of lake fortification. The castle is wet on all sides by the waters of Lake Garda, and on one of these sides was realized shortly after the castle was built, the dock, which once was the refugee site of the Scaliger fleet. The walls and the three massive towers are characterized by the swallowtail merlars that distinguish every scaligera construction. Behind these three towers emerges the imposing 47 meter tall dungeon under which the cells were destined for the prisoners. At one time, the fortress could be accessed from the outside of the town and from the village itself by means of lifting bridges, while today it is only possible to enter the village. Through doors fitted with effective closing systems, access to the large porch, inside which stands a ladder leading to a drawbridge. From there, through a 146-step ramp, you can reach the runners of the walls, from which you can enjoy the dock. Even though the dock is protected by towers, however, unlike those inside the castle, they are not characterized by the swallowtail merlot but by a base structure known as a spearhead. This feature, along with the use of bricks and stones from nearby areas, indicates a different construction period. One side of the dock extends an outer moat that flows directly to the lake. The construction of the fortress began around the middle of the 13th century, probably on the remains of a Roman fortification. His realization was ordered by the Verona Leonardino della Scala podestà, better known as Mastino della Scala. The function of the castle was defensive and port control, as the city of Sirmione, being in a border position, was most exposed to aggression. Approximately a century later, two courtyards and an independent fortification, joined by barbarians to the main one, were added to increase the defenses of the fortress. In 1405 Sirmione passed under the control of the Republic of Venice during whose domination began a work to strengthen the defensive structures. It was during this period that the present-day dock was realized, even if it is supposed to be present a scaligera dock, probably woody. Sirmione maintained its defensive position until the sixteenth century when, for political reasons, the fortress of Peschiera del Garda was modernized. Inside the large inner porch of the castle there was a Roman and medieval lapidarium, as well as a brief show where some of the panels have the most important information on the castle. There is also access to the ramparts of the walls and, through recently restored wooden stairs, you can reach the top of the tower, the highest tower of the fort. It is said that long ago in the castle lived a boy named Ebengardo with his beloved Arice: the two young men spent a serene life, until their love was interrupted by a tragic episode. During a stormy night he asked for shelter in the castle Elalberto, a Veneto knight coming from the feltry territory. The couple housed the knight who, however, astonished at the beauty of the maiden, reached her in the night. Arice began screaming scared and Elalberto stabbed her. Meanwhile, Ebengardo ran into the room where Arice found no living, so that, blinded by anger, took the dagger and killed Elalberto. Legend has it that even today, on storm nights, you can see the soul of Ebengardo wander around the castle in search of Arice.
