Assisi - Rocca Maggiore

Italy 2017 - Assisi - Rocca Maggiore (Umbria)
Rocca Maggiore and San Damiano, Assisi, Italy
Overlooking the town of Assisi are two fortresses, Rocca Maggiore (Greater fortress) and Rocca Minore (Lesser fortress). Walk with us through the very well restored ruins, through tunnels and have a panoramic view atop the lookout tower. Then, travel to the sanctuary of San Damiano where Saint Claire started the order of The Poor Claires and lived there for many years until her death. A follower of Saint Francis, Claire lived her life devoted to God.

Rocca Maggiore (Big Fortress) in Assisi, Italy: shakuhachi improvisation
This castle-like fortress it sits on top of the medieval village of Assisi, famous for producing the nature-loving Saint Francis. It was just before it opened for tourists in the morning so I did a quick improv in an outer corner of the fortress.
Assisi: Live from the Rocca Maggiore
:
The Basilica of St. Francis is not the only thing to see in Assisi: high above the town is the mighty castle of Rocca Maggiore, a medieval fortress that was built almost a thousand years ago, and from its Eastern Tower, Tony Page shows you a 360° panoramic view of Assisi and the surrounding landscape of Umbria, Italy.
Well there's the road down that I've just come up and here is the castle, Rocca Maggiore, and there's the entrance -- you can see, just there. You can also go up onto a plain over there. And the next shot you'll see is us on the top of the tower!
Well, here we are on top of the tower on one side of the fortress of Rocca Maggiore above Assisi and you're looking at what appears to be the cemetery of the Basilica. Anyway, I'm on top of this tower and I'm going to walk around, giving the view that we see. This is away from Assisi. And here we are, and you can see the tower -- that (passageway) is actually what we walk along as we come in.
Now let's zoom in a bit here so that you can actually see the passageway. As you can see, it's covered, quite narrow, just wide enough to squeeze by another person. The first bit is open, we came in there.
The main part of the fortress is here, the Keep. You can walk up this tower, which we did, and if you look at the top there, that's the other place that you can get to by these tiny spiral staircases. It's quite interesting. They warn you not to come to this other part of the tower if you are claustrophobic. Well, I can see that because it is quite narrow. It reminds me a bit of the Pont du Gard viaduct in France, if you have ever walked across there in that little tunnel.
So, here we are again -- I'll zoom out. There's a large plain here. If you don't want to pay five euro to walk up the castle you can walk across this plain -- which is rather exposed -- and get just as good views really of Assisi.
Now that's part of Assisi. A lot of it is hidden below the actual hill. So you're looking over the edge of the hill and Assisi's down there hidden, and as we move around you can see the Basilica as it comes into view. It's really a complex. And there we are, as you can see Helen's just looking at it there.
You can see the people here -- I'll zoom in -- streaming out of the actual Basilica. We've actually been there before, but as you can see, there they are, going in and out. The place itself is really huge as you will note when we get down there. It really stretches all the way that you can see. Anyway, that's enough of that and with everybody else we're going to wend our way down again.

The Rocca Maggiore dominated for more than eight hundred years, the citadel of Assisi and the valley of Tescio, constituting the most viable fortification for their defense. You can reach the fortress on foot through the door Perlici, built in 1316: you can admire the walls in Assisi still intact which, in their long journey, engage the two fortresses, Major and Minor.
The first documented regarding the fortress date back to the 1173, when the German diplomat and Catholic Archbishop Christian of Mainz (1130 - 1183, chancellor of Germany during the reign of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, occupied Assisi on behalf of the sovereign who stayed there for a short time. Lived there, as well, the little future King of Sicily and Emperor Frederick II, entrusted by his mother Costanza d'Altavilla to the Duchess of Urslingen, wife of Duke of Spoleto and comes Assisi Corrado, confidant of the monarch Swabian.
Queen Empress Constance returned to Sicily and then return to Assisi with the wife Henry VI: the baptism of Constantine was celebrated in Cathedral of San Rufino and was imposed the auspicious name (of the two grandparents) Frederick Roger. In 1198 the city passed to the Guelph of Pope Innocent III, and the people, causing extensive damage to the fortress, drove the imperial legate with Frederick, who was only four years. In that year Francis of Assisi was sixteen.
The fortress will be reconstructed, in respect of the medieval, in 1356, the initiative of Cardinal Albornoz (1310 - 1367), commissioned by Innocent VI by Avignon, to strengthen the fortifications of the Papal. In 1458, the captain Perugia and Lord of Assisi Jacopo Piccinino (1423 - 1465 built the polygonal tower north -occidentale, then finish made by Pope Pius II, and connected to the rest of the walls of a corridor equipped and strengthened. The complex consists of a fortress walls, built with the pink stone of Mount Subasio, trapezoidal, with towers at each corner, which includes mold square, renovated, in 1478 by Sixtus V, on which stands the mighty keep.
To the inside of the fortress (where, in 1972, some scenes of the movie Brother Sun, Sister Moon, directed by Franco Zeffirelli keep.[7])leads to the entrance of the round bastion, commissioned in 1535 by Paul III : you come, then, to the large fenced yard, where once there were the rooms of service, and the male, former home of the castle, divided into four rooms accessible by a spiral staircase. The Rocca Maggiore joins, through the fourteenth century walls, with its fortress Minor, or stronghold or keep of St. Anthony, commissioned by Albornoz in order to consolidate, to the mountain, that part of fortification.
