The Rochdale Pioneers Museum is housed in the building where the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society started trading on 21st December 1844.
The museum is regarded as the birthplace of the modern co-operative movement. It is located in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England. A plaque was donated to the museum in 2000 and was originally made to commemorate the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society centenary in 1944. Rochdale Pioneers Co-op Museum 23.1.2016 - Co-operative CRS CWS
The fascinating Rochdale Pioneers Museum, which is basically a museum dedicated to the UK phenomenon which was The Co-op, a nationwide chain of 1,000's of shops selling everything which were run on a co-operative basis. They had numerous factories and farms providing items to sell in the shops. Every small town at one time had it's own Co-op Society, where the members would get a share of the profits, the famous divi. This is where it all began in this Lancashire milltown with this early Victorian shop with a counter made out of a plank held up by barrels.

Rochdale Pioneers The Musical visits The Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre, Rochdale
If We're Not Together We're Nowt
Two Rochdale musicians who appeared as actors in the film The Rochdale Pioneers last year were so inspired by the experience that they have written a full length stage musical about the beginnings in Rochdale of the worldwide co-operative movement. Title as above.
Singer/songwriter Rod Barry and musician/composer Ian Jenkins have teamed up with local composer/conductor Graham Marshall to complete the writing of the musical in just four months.
Ian and Rod will be performing the opening song of the musical, The Ballad Of Toad Lane, together in public for the first time at a Co-operative event on 16th April in Rochdale. In association with the Co-operative Revolution Gallery's visit to Rochdale, they will perform their composition prior to a showing of the film The Rochdale Pioneers. The film was made in 2012 by The Co-operative British Youth Film Academy, and had its TV premiere on Film 4 last November. There will be a question and answer session with the two musicians after the film, followed by a contemporary interpretation of The Ballad Of Toad Lane by Youth 21. The event begins at 6.30 pm at Touchstones.
A major scene in the musical is a Lancashire clog dance by the doffers (children). Rochdalians can get a taste of this at the Wheatsheaf Centre, Rochdale at 12noon on 20th April when leading clog dance coach Alex Fisher brings her clog dance team, together with a party of child clog dancers to the centre for a clog dance exhibition.

The Rochdale Pioneers - P.M.Adamson
This song was from a Musical I wish I'd never written called 'Rise of The Labour Party'. It was based it on a set of history notes given as a hand out by our outstanding History Teacher Mr.Paul Hopkins who went on to receive an O.B.E. Fully deserved for his contribution to Education. ( I bet he never though his handouts would end up in a song broadcast to the World) He was a legend and certainly inspired me in my formative years as a teacher. Unfortunately, the musical didn't gel. However, I quite liked this song so decided to give it a you tube outing sadly with only one slide. I contacted the Co-op for permissions to use their excellent Museum materials and the conversation is pending. So here is the song with a public domain picture of Robert Owen in the instrumental. You will have to imagine what pictures I would have used such as the CWS warehouses and the original pioneers committee etc.Still if the song has any worth it wont need the pictures anyway.
