Roche Rock Hermitage Cornwall
Roche Rock Hermitage Cornwall
Know Before You Go!
The hermitage is located in the village of Roche, St. Austell. Getting up to the chapel can be dangerous. There are only a few rusty step ladders to help you up, so do take care when making your way up to the hermitage.
Roche, pronounced Roach , the village gets its name from a granite outcrop east of the village. Today a dangerous winding track over broken rocks leads up to the remains of the tiny chapel at Roche Rock. The village is 6 miles from St Austell and about 8 miles from Bodmin.
Roche parish is located on high ground north of St Austell, surrounded by moorland wastes. It is 1,032 ft above sea level. The clay-mining villages of Stenalees and Bugle (also once known as Carn Rosemary) are to the south-east. Tin was also once mined on the Goss Moor. Both the rivers Par and Fal rise in this parish. The River Fal rises in Colvreath, the Par River rises in Penstrase and a small stream that rises at Holy Well, flows into the River Camel. The chief villages were Churchtown, Belovely, Tregoss and Tresease.
Castle-an-Dinas is a high hill with an ancient hillfort on top, and a disused wolfram mine on the side.
The Goss Moor was streamed for tin in early years and later dredged.
The main industry is now clay, but in the past there was a brickworks at nearby Carbis, a Glass Mine at Polpuff, tin on the Goss Moor, Wolfram at Castle-an-Dinas and a stone quarry at Trezaise (Glebe Quarry).
About one mile from Roche on the road to Demelza is a lane to Holy Well. This is a lovely little well which is said to be 14th century and had special healing properties in its water. It was restored in 1937 by St Austell Old Cornwall Society.
Roche has three inns, the Victoria on the A30, the Poachers and the Rock Inn, both in Fore Street. Rock Inn is dated 1587.
On the rock is a hermitage chapel of St Michael, built in 1409. The ruins of the chapel were last occupied by the family of local landowners when they contracted leprosy, and stayed here so that they would not infect the village.

Roche Rock From Above
On top of Roche Rock is a ruined 15th century chapel (dedicated to St Michael) which is said to have been the abode of a leper or a monk. The chapel is said to have been built by a hermit as a cell. The identity of the hermit is not certain but some say he was a shunned leper from the Tregarnick family, whose daughter, St Gundred tended to him.

Exploring Cornwall - The Chapel on Roche Rock
I am scared. I don't like heights and I have just climbed up Roche Rock and now my legs have turned to jelly!
In this episode, Mark Sellwood and I, have come to explore a medieval chapel built onto a huge lump of granite, known as Roche Rock.
On top of Roche Rock is a ruined chapel (dedicated to St Michael) which is said to have been the abode of a leper or a monk. An 1881 description of the chapel, still had a considerable portion of the masony standing and one or two windows were faily perfect, although the steps up to the chapel are roughly cut.

St Michael's chapel, Roche rock, Roche, Cornwall
Roche rock (100 feet high) must be one of the most impressive religious monuments in Cornwall. Some have said that Roche could be the saint from southern France, though that is doubtful, though the name is definately french for rock. The first occupant of Roche rock was a Welsh man, Saint Conan/Gonand, who went on to become the first bishop of Cornwall. The chapel being built in 1409AD (so quite modern!), named after St Michael, the archangel/saint of high places. There is a well nearby thet is said to ebb with the tide. A little further away is the Holywell of St Gundred (1/4 of a mile northside of old A30 near Victoria inn) ,a lady who looked after her father, who suffered with leparosy, who lived in a cell on the rock here, after St Conan. I foolishly climbed up the step ladder one handed whilst filming... I advise you not to do such, the angels must have been on my side that day!

The back of Roche Rock.
Gundred's holywell, nr Roche, Cornwall
Taking the A30 west past Victoria Inn, 1/4 mile, you'll see a track on the right that goes over the railway, then following diverted track that goes under the new A30 to a cottage, then through their front garden (don't worry, you're still on a public right of way),(also, look out for dog poo!), to a gate, which leads down a steepish path then left towards some boggy ground, where you will find a pleasing looking well. Gundred was the daughter of a leper who live in a cell on roche rock nearby. She collected water for her father from here for its medicinal properties. St Conan (from Wales), the original occupant of Roche rock, became the first bishop of Cornwall. Near the rock is another well, reputed to ebb with tide! The rock marks the flow of the St Michael Leyline, the chapel on the rock being dedicated to St Michael, patron saint of high places. Well worth a visit.
