Re-titled to match Sound Cloud
We were about to record this track when through the door walked Lenny Vortex the legendary one armed accordionist . He was alone. Where's Gus? I asked.
Lenny then gave us the bad news that Gus Hogarth was in James' Cooke hospital, finished as his pusher in, His knees are shot Said Lenny. Y'know in thirty years I only managed to shove him off the stage twice. We had to explain to Simon the sound engineer from the digital generation that a pusher in is the unsung hero who applies the reciprocal force to power the bellows of a one armed accordionist, a sometimes brutal encounter, and Gus was the best.
The doctors had offered to fit Lenny with a Robot thingy but in his faultless logic he'd told them no.
If God wanted me to have two arms he would have kept me away from Sedgefield car boot fair and that 750 cc Kawasaki novelty pencil sharpener. Just then our keyboard player (who can't be named for legal reasons) remembered he was due to sign on and legged it. Lenny offered to sit in for him and went to fetch his gear from the van. Nobody dared to ask who would be pusher in, but Lenny had a plan.
We can use studio 2 What he meant was the gent's toilet, often the best vocal booth for those on a tight budget. We auditioned several swivel chairs till we had one without a squeak. Simon had offered to fix the squeaks with Melodyne DNA and explained to Lenny that it was possible to isolate the squeak and re-tune it. Lenny gave him the look and Simon had the sense not to argue. We then wedged Lenny, sitting side saddle, left foot on the pot, into the corner of trap 2 and 6 rolls of gaffer tape later we were ready. Simon, ever the joker made a crack about Bum notes and this did not sit well with Lenny and I smelt trouble, at least I thought it was trouble.
So when One take Lenny suggested we tracked a second take, telling Simon to D I his twin Fishman pick ups into the Nation Grid, everyone round the mixing desk was shocked, but not as shocked as Simon.
For the curious amongst you, that novelty pencil sharpener is on display in Middlesbrough's Dorman Museum, the remains of Lenny's hand with it's first and second finger sticking out from the top of the casing in a familiar gesture that never fails to force a giggle from school parties and Nuns. This treasured exhibit has only been covered on one occasion, when Her Majesty the Queen re-opened the museum in 1973 following a major face lift. (The museum that is, not the Queen.)
While the Queen was shown the stuffed lion, Prince Phillip made a beeline for the hand, determined to have his picture taken alongside this icon of bad taste, an embarrassing scuffle broke out when the Duke tried to jump the queue in front of Robert Fripp and John Wetton and Robert has shied away from photographers ever since.
Lenny of course found fame as a founder member of the progressive folk-rock-jazz-fusion outfit, The Irate Pirate's Steering Committee, their first album Provisional Manifesto was famously described in the Melody Maker as Tripe. The band refused to be intimidated by the truth and called their second album And Onions. Recording all their work in Stockton's Piranha Pine studio located in Daventry Ave. (Now dismantled and all building materials returned to their rightful owners). Original copies of these forgotten masterpieces regularly change hands, no pun intended Lenny, at car boot fairs where listeners who can't believe how bad they are scramble to unload them on to the next mug.
I'm glad to report that Simon made a full recovery and it was his perceptive idea not to Auto Tune any of Lenny's backing vocals and to use his grandfather's Teac 3340 for the final mix. So listen with respect to the last ever recording of the Legendary,
Lenny Vortex.

PetSavers Abseil 2015
At the BSAVA Congress in Birmingham this April, crowds gathered at the ICC to watch a number of brave fundraising animal lovers abseil 56 feet down the building.
They took the plunge to raise money for PetSavers - BSAVA's charity, who have funded the study of medical and surgical conditions in pets, without the use of experimental animals, for over 40 years.
For more information about how your veterinary practice can help support PetSavers - visit petsavers.org.uk
We'd like to thank the abseilers and also everyone who has ever contributed to PetSavers.

2018 QV1 Abseil for charity
At Penrhos, we focus on nurturing and inspiring the mind, heart, body and spirit of each girl to promote determination, resilience and courage of conviction. I certainly recognise the strength of character we seek to grow in student Abby Fitzgerald and I feel proud that her peers at the College are supporting her cause by bravely abseiling down the QV1 building in Perth CBD.
We are delighted to know that Abby, with the help of her abseiling friends like Stella McLaughlin and Sharni Reidy-Crofts, is determined to raise funds for childhood brain cancer research via The Pirate Ship Foundation, which currently funds around 33% of the world Brain Tumour Research Project at the Telethon Kids Institute.
