The Rock of Gibraltar - The Famous Rock, Great Food, and the Summer Crowds!
Our Summer 2018 road trip from Portugal to Spain continues - now we hit the famous Rock of Gibraltar, located on the Straits of Gibraltar just on the other side of Tarifa beach and guarding the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea.
You're able to drive onto the Rock, or you can park on the Spanish side and walk in for only about six euro or so. Walking on saves you time lining up in the car to get through customs.
The runway of Gibraltar is pretty cool and you cross it right after entering the Rock. Pleny to see, plenty to eat and all the shops and stores from the UK line the town center.
If you're willing to brave the August tourist lines for the cable car up to the top of the Rock, stunning views and lots of Barbary apes await you.
Whether a day trip, road trip, or a short vacation - Gibraltar is an adventure and a genuine British experience.
Enjoy!

Gibraltar: The Rock
More info about travel to the Costa del Sol: The Rock of Gibraltar stands like a fortress at the gateway to the Mediterranean. With its strategic setting, Gibraltar has an illustrious military history and remnants of its martial past are everywhere. But within a generation the economy has gone from one dominated by the military to one based on tourism.

The Rock Hotel Gibraltar Sunny Pool Area

This is a video of the pool area at The Rock Hotel, Gibraltar. I stayed here a few months back and the weather was great!
The pool area is situated across the road from The Rock Hotel and is easy to get to as it's only a very short walk away. There are many comfy sunbeds around the pool and plenty of changing rooms on site too. At the rear of the pool there is a lovely raised decked area and this is a good vantage point for taking photos as you can capture the whole pool including sunbeds.
Drinks and food are served at the pool bar and I had lunch there a couple of times. I was very impressed with the quality, taste and presentation of the food - it was a pleasant surprise.
The video draws to a close in the Rock Hotel car park, after walking out of the pool area, through the pretty entrance.
I have some more video of Gibraltar that will be uploaded soon, including footage inside the Rock Hotel, and my RANT about the poor things in my room.
All footage is in 4K and from an iPhone 7 (I was testing the video and audio quality and recording capabilities).
As always, I welcome feedback so please don't be shy and leave a comment. I will do my best to answer as soon as I can.
Enjoy...

Trip to Gibraltar to Visit the Rock Apes
While on PPL Training at Fly-In-Spain based at Jerez International Airport a few of us thought we would pop down to Gibraltar for a day out.
Gibraltar is an English colony which uses Gibraltan Pounds and the Euro. It has all the English style foods and pubs in the main square such as Fish & Chips. It is a nice break from the very Spanish town of Jerez which is an unspoilt gem of Spanish Culture.
You have to cross the runway to enter Gibraltar. The runway is a Class C runway as it has a prevalence to high winds.
I will be landing a PA28 at this airfield later in the year.
The Rock as it is known is how to over 300mischievous Barbary macaque. They are scattered over the rock.
The port is home to the Royal Navy and when we were there; there was two submarines in the port.
The Royal Anglians have the Freedom on the City.

The Rock of Gibraltar:
The Rock of Gibraltar has been an important piece of land for centuries. It’s first claim to fame was that it was where two huge, skyscraper-sized rocks stood, almost like giant pillars. These were called by the ancient people, the Pillars of Hercules. One of the pillars has long since washed away, but the other remained. It is after this pillar and the body of water around it (called Gibraltar) that the area is named. This area has been held by many different countries including, Arabia, Spain, France, and England. Going through the border Spain - Gibraltar
Nothing extraordinary is happening on the border to Gibraltar. When you enter, you first see a Spanish officer who is just checking the availability of your documents. In the next step you are greeted by the customs officer of Gibraltar, who is checking your eligibility to enter. If you are a citizen of the EU or have a passport of one of those countries that don’t need a visa for the UK, you can easily pass by. If you are a citizen of a country that requires a visa to the UK, it is a bit more complicated for you.
Fun Facts about the Rock of Gibraltar
If you are lost and wandering in the Mediterranean Sea, you can see the Rock of Gibraltar even if you are several miles away from it. Why? It is because the Rock of Gibraltar is as high as 426 meters. It protrudes out of the Mediterranean Sea the way candles stand upon a birthday cake. The Rock of Gibraltar is made of limestone which is the material that companies use to make cement, so it is very strong.
