Pondicherry rock beach | Pondicherry food tour

Pondicherry rock beach (or, known as, Pondicherry Beach) is the popular stretch of beachfront in the city of Puducherry, India, along the Bay of Bengal. It is a 1.2-kilometre-long stretch in Pondicherry, starts from War Memorial and ends at Dupleix Park on the Goubert Avenue. A seaside promenade runs along the Bay of Bengal and passes several statues, including a 4m-high Gandhi Memorial.

Serenity Beach

One of the most gorgeous beaches in Pondicherry, Serenity Beach is an unmissable attraction! Swathed with pristine golden sands and lapped by shimmering waters of the Bay of Bengal, this treasure trove of nature is secluded, quiet and of course, spectacular. Paradise Beach

With an unspoilt and vast shoreline that is lined with dense palm groves, this Paradise beach truly exudes romance at every step. Frequented by beach lovers and honeymoon couples from all corners of the country and beyond, this beach stretches over several miles. Measuring 2.88 metres in height, the Statue of Dupleix lies strategically in Goubert Avenue (Beach Road). Made of granite, this statue was erected in honour of Francois Dupleix, the French who governed Pondicherry from 1742 to 1754. This statue, which was commissioned in the year 1870, stands as a symbol ... For two decades, the Government of Pondicherry has watched as the town’s beautiful sand beach disappeared and fishing villages fell into the sea. Not until Beach Road, the town’s famous promenade, began subsiding did the government take action — and, naturally, it took the wrong action.

Rather than breaking the harbour which is causing the erosion, the governement began an expensive and futile program of “fortifying” the shoreline with heavy boulders. This battle cannot be won with rocks. Indeed, hard-structures like seawalls and groynes exacerbate and accelerate the devastation. The erosive force of the sea can only be passified by the restoration of the sandy beach, the crucial buffer between sea and land.

Look at the photo above. Is there any question of what is causing our coastline to erode?

Why does the Government of Pondicherry preserve the barely-utilized harbour when it is causing such widespread destruction of our precious coastline? Because they are angling to build a new deep-water port at the same location — a project that would be twenty times larger, more destructive, and more economically useless than the existing harbour. To destroy the existing breakwater would not only be an admission of failures past; it would be a concession that the corruption-nourished port plan will entail environmental devastation.

The solution is simple; but it seems our politicians are simpler still. Puducherry is replacing a rocky waterfront with a beach

It is a sweltering, slumbering Sunday afternoon but Puducherry Chief Minister A. Nayaranasamy makes time to speak of the pilot project that aims to restore Puducherry’s sandy beach to its famous rocky promenade. Sifting through memories, he recalls,“I was born in a village about 5-7 kilometres from here. The sea was a part of life for my family. When I was a young boy, we used to run to the water and go swimming in the sea. Beaches are where people come to relax in the evenings after work, and they are also a critical source of livelihood for coastal communities. Beach restoration has been one of our dreams.”

In early March, a baby step was taken in this direction by the many agencies jointly handling the project, with the commencement of the Shoreline Management Plan for Puducherry.

In a first for the country, it sees the coastline as a continuous entity occurring in nature beyond State boundaries, and offers a man-made solution to a man-made problem.

Puducherry lost its sandy beaches, including the most visible stretch of bay down the historic Goubert Avenue, almost within a decade of the construction, in 1989, of its ‘under-performing’ port, which meanwhile, is used more as a fishing harbour.

We went to Rock beach at 5 am to see the sunrise but unfortunately it was a cloudy morning so we were not able to see the sunrise, but still it was a wonderful experience.
Just sitting near the sea shore and listening to ocean and wind was spectacular.

Here is a video on what are the things you mustn't miss if you are going to Pondicherry.

This is what one can cover in 2 days. I have also listed the places that we missed.

DAY 1

We had breakfast in the hotel and started around 9am.

Went to rent the bikes since it was walking distance from Hotel.
1 Chunnambar Boat House to see paradise beach
2 Paradise beach - Well maintained, clean and beautiful

3 Cafe Heart Church - another beautiful church
4 French colony - roamed around to see the buildings
5 Lunch at Café Xtasi - nice pizza and other options
6 Auroville & Matrimandir - go to Visitor's Center to get the necessary details. To gain access to the Matrimandir, you need an access token from the Visitors Center
7 Serene beach - spend some time and clicked few pictures. It is adjacent to rock beach.

8 Spend evening at Rock beach - just sit and enjoy the waves hitting rocks
9 Don’t miss the ice cream at GMT
10 Dinner at Les Chefs - tasty food and lot of verities.

Day 2

1 Baker’s street - to try nice bakery items in breakfast
2 Mannakula Vinaynagar Ganpati temple - Vibrant Hindu temple known for its elephant blessings, ornately carved stone walls & golden chariot

3 Sri Aurobindo Ashram - did some shopping scented soap etc
4 Vedapureeswarar Temple - Beautiful temple dedicated to lord Shiva
5 Church of Our Lady of Angels - Very beautiful church

6 French Colony - A stroll through the old French quarters
7 Rock beach - following places at walkable distance
