Minneapolis, KS is the place where intrepid adventurers can find Rock City, the world's largest collection of sandstone concretions.

Driving along the highway in Kansas, there are billboards for Rock City. It makes sense that an interested tourist would expect something like buildings or at least huts built out of rock. Rock City is actually a collection of rocks that tourists pay $3 to see. Upon paying out the three dollars, you are given a little pamphlet that marks out the rocks and labels them. There is the crescent, lips, turtle, twin sisters, kissing rocks, bathtub, and the giant's easy chair -- among others -- and if you tilt your head the right way and squint your eyes, sometimes the rocks actually do look like that.

A geologist may find this area considerably more interesting. According to the pamphlets provided by the Rock City Gift Shop, these rocks are the largest collection of giant sedimentary rock in the world. Scientists hypothesize that the rocks were created after water, which covered all of Kansas millions of years ago, receeded. The ground water then contained calcium carbonate which cemented all the rocks together

The rocks at ROCK CITY are huge sandstone concretions. In an area about the size of two football fields, 200 rocks - some as large as houses, dot the landscape. There is not other place in world where there are so many concentrations of such giant size.

(Deb) We were talking a couple of weeks ago about the fact that when I mentioned that I had moved out to Oakley, on the high plains, this one lady said, Oh I love the Flint Hills. While the Flint Hills are lovely, that's not all of Kansas, and it's not all the hills in Kansas. The Smoky Hills is quite extensive, and that's what we're going to talk about today. I think next week we hope to do the Chautauqua Hills. We did the Gyp Hills last week. We got some amazing hills in Kansas. We do. I’ve got to tell you, Dr. Jake has this amazing app on his phone, and I don't know who, what this app is but it's a barometer and an altimeter. As we're driving along on the road, I'm like, Give me your phone, and I'll check the altitude and see how big it is. Did I do a promo for this already? They should send me royalties. Not only do we deserve an Emmy, we deserve royalties for all the people that we're pitching here on the show [laughs]. (Frank) That's right. We have no shame. (Deb) We have none. None. Zero. So yes. If you buy one of those, you let me know so I can write the company. That is the coolest app. When you're going all over the state, and you're looking at the change in altitude -- Flat Kansas? Nope. It's not. It's not. (Frank) No. I know you're going to do Smoky Hills. As a historian, surely in that story you have why they're called the Smoky Hills? (Deb) I sure hope so. [Laughter] (Frank) I guess we're going to find out. (Deb) I guess we'll find out. Let’s take a look and see. Deeper seas than those of the Gypsum Hills formed the Cretaceous-age outcroppings of rock that characterize the Smoky Hills of north central Kansas. According to the Kansas Geological Survey, three principal rock outcrops characterize the Smoky Hills: the sandstones of the Dakota Formation, the limestones of the Greenhorn Limestone Formation, and the thick chalks of Niobrara Chalk. The Dakota Formation sandstones crop out in a wide belt from Rice and McPherson Counties in the south, to Washington County in the north. They are the remains of beach sands and sediments dumped by rivers draining into the early Cretaceous seas. The hills and buttes, like Coronado Heights, are capped by this sandstone. The next outcrop belt to the west is the Greenhorn Limestone, which is made up of thin chalky limestone beds alternating with thicker beds of shale. The Greenhorn limestone was deposited in a relatively shallow part of the Cretaceous Sea. Near the top of the Greenhorn is fence post limestone, used for building and fences due to the lack of wood. The westernmost range of hills developed on the thick chalks of the Niobrara Chalk. These beds were deposited in a deeper part of the Cretaceous ocean and are exposed in bluffs of the Solomon, Saline, and Smoky Hill Rivers. Pinnacles, spires, and odd-shaped masses such as Castle Rock and Monument Rock in Gove County are characteristic of those formations. It is in these outcroppings that the fossils of swimming reptiles like mosasaurs and plesiosaurs have been found. The Smoky Hills are extensive and there are several places to visit to learn more. In addition to the museums like the Sternberg in Hays or the Fick Fossil Museum in Oakley, the Fort Wallace Museum, the Russell Springs Museum, El Quartelejo in Scott City, and Ottawa County Museum in Minneapolis offer fossils and related exhibits. To observe the landscape itself, besides Castle and Monument Rocks, there is Rock City, Mushroom Rock State Park, Kanopolis State Park, and the Scenic Byways that crisscross the area.

With more rains in the forecast as a tropical storm from the Gulf of Mexico slams into southeastern continental United States, Inc.

KATSCRATH.co Free Global Hi-Fi WiFi Community Radio owner/operator, Joel Bales, submitted an urgent letter Monday night to Kansas Governor Coyler, US Congressman Jerry Moran, the Riley County Commission, Manhattan City Manager and a litany of other government, NGOs and private Human Services Agencies to request and encourage all of their offices and staff work together in cooperation to immediately initiate state and federal natural disaster procedures.

Bales urged Governor Coyler to declare a state of emergency to faciliate the federal government to provide Manhattan residents federal emergency services; to procide local, state and federal relief agencies immediate emergency funds and infrastucture assets to help allieviate this developing veritable Humanitarian Crisis.

Declaring a state of emergency by a governor or president facilitates the state beauracracy to act immediately to an emergency and to release appropriated emergency funds instantly. Such declarations are a formality to more efficiently help relieve the Human crisis occuring now in the Little Apple.

Bales requested that public government agencies and private NGOs take immediate and egalitarian emergency action to assist flood victims.

A new era of homelessness began today, Bales said. Let's pray, cooperate and act with common purpose together to help ensure the current crisis is as short of an era as possible.

Kansas is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States. It is named after the Kansa Native American tribe, which inhabited the area. The tribe's name (natively kką:ze) is often said to mean people of the wind or people of the south wind, although this was probably not the term's original meaning. Residents of Kansas are called Kansans. For thousands of years what is now Kansas was home to numerous and diverse Native American tribes. Tribes in the Eastern part of the state generally lived in villages along the river valleys. Tribes in the Western part of the state were semi-nomadic and hunted large herds of bison. Kansas was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s, but the pace of settlement accelerated in the 1850s, in the midst of political wars over the slavery issue.
When it was officially opened to settlement by the U.S. government in 1854, abolitionist Free-Staters from New England and pro-slavery settlers from neighboring Missouri rushed to the territory to determine if Kansas would become a free state or a slave state. Thus, the area was a hotbed of violence and chaos in its early days as these forces collided, and was known as Bleeding Kansas. The abolitionists eventually prevailed and on January 29, 1861, Kansas entered the Union as a free state. After the Civil War, the population of Kansas grew rapidly, when waves of immigrants turned the prairie into farmland. Today, Kansas is one of the most productive agricultural states, producing high yields of wheat, sorghum, and sunflowers. Kansas is the 15th most extensive and the 34th most populous of the 50 United States.

Geography

Kansas is bordered by Nebraska on the north; Missouri on the east; Oklahoma on the south; and Colorado on the west. The state is divided into 105 counties with 628 cities, and is located equidistant from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The geographic center of the 48 contiguous states is located in Smith County near Lebanon. The geodetic center of North America was located in Meades Ranch, Kansas, Osborne County until 1983. This spot was used until that date as the central reference point for all maps of North America produced by the U.S. government. The geographic center of Kansas is located in Barton County.

Geology

Kansas is underlain by a sequence of horizontal to gently westward dipping sedimentary rocks. A sequence of Mississippian, Pennsylvanian and Permian rocks outcrop in the eastern and southern part of the state. The western half of the state has exposures of Cretaceous through Tertiary sediments, the latter derived from the erosion of the uplifted Rocky Mountains to the west. These are underlain by older Paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments which correlate well with the outcrops to the east. The northeastern corner of the state was subjected to glaciation in the Pleistocene and is covered by glacial drift and loess.

Topography

The western two-thirds of the state, lying in the great central plain of the United States, has a generally flat or undulating surface, while the eastern third has many hills and forests. The land gradually rises from east to west; its altitude ranges from 684 ft (208 m) along the Verdigris River at Coffeyville in Montgomery County, to 4,039 ft (1,231 m) at Mount Sunflower, one half mile from the Colorado border, in Wallace County. It is a popular belief that Kansas is the flattest state in the nation, reinforced by a well known 2003 tongue-in-cheek study stating that Kansas was indeed flatter than a pancake. This has since been called into question, with most scientists ranking Kansas somewhere between 20th and 30th flattest state, depending on measurement method. Its average elevation is 2,000 feet, higher than 36 states.

Around Kansas - Castle Rock - March 16, 2016

(Frank) And we're back. So, and now that we're getting into Spring too, it's going to be a great time to maybe travel around and see some of the places we told you about over the winter months anyway. (Deb) We should make a rock bucket list. You know the Travel and Tourism has their bucket list, but we should make a bucket list of rocks you've gotta see in Kansas. (Frank) There are a lot of rocks. There are a lot of trees too, but rocks. (Deb) It seems like every time we come on we are talking about a different rock. But man we've got some great rocks. And I got to go to Castle Rock. I had never been to Castle Rock. I've been to Monument Rocks in Gove County. (Frank) Alright. (Deb) But I had not been to Castle Rock until just a couple of weeks ago. Oh my gosh. I cannot wait to go back and explore. Cannot wait. And it is south of Quinter, so Quinter is up near the interstate. But if you keep going south of Castle Rock and go on down to Utica, and Utica is a very, very small town, but there is a phenomenal restaurant. It is called The Wertz Street Social Emporium. (Frank) It's called what? (Deb) The Wertz, W-E-R-T-Z Street Social Emporium. And it is owned by Mark Bauer and it's been several things over the years, but he put a restaurant in there in 1992 and has expanded it ever since. It's got all kinds of dining rooms and party rooms and a couple of bars and just all kinds of stuff. It's awesome. The food was wonderful, phenomenal steak. So yes, stop in when you make your trip to Castle Rock or Monument Rocks or Pawnee Rock or Point of Rocks or any of the rocks you plan to see, stop in Utica and tell Mark I sent you over. (Frank) You're just shameless to get a free lunch aren't you? (Deb) Honey, that steak was so good. So good. Yes. Yes, I will talk for food. I will talk for food. (Frank) OK, so are we ready for Castle Rock? (Deb) I think we are. (Frank) OK. (Deb) Let's take a look. The bluff at Castle Rock rises over the Hackberry Creek Valley of Gove County plains, visible for miles and miles. Castle Rock stands about a 1/4 mile away to the north. Made of Niobrara chalk, it was an odd landmark for folks passing along on the Butterfield Overland Dispatch. The formation literally looked like a castle rising in the distance. Though nature carved the
unique installation through erosion, folks were terribly disappointed when the taller spire of Castle Rock partially collapsed on July 22, 2001 after a thunderstorm. The great puzzle of Castle Rock is why it persisted when all the rock between it and the bluff was eroded away. The bluff itself is a series of eroded formations called hoodoos, and are just as interesting as the Castle, and quite extensive. The flat grassy area is chalk flat prairie, dominated by little bluestem, sideoats grama and saltgrass. Many wildflowers bloom from late spring to early fall. Lesser earless lizards, ornate box turtles, plains garter snakes, and western hognose snakes are found in the area. Western rattlesnakes may be present, so look where you step! Watch for great horned owls that nest in the hoodoo area. Look for sharks' teeth and other fossils among the chalk rocks and gravel since his area was once the bottom of a large ocean. This is private land, so be respectful. There are no restroom facilities, so plan accordingly. Also, the roads are not paved so use common sense in case of wet weather. When the planets are aligned for your visit, plan to go and spend some time exploring.
