The Story of Rock Ferry Wines
INSPIRED BY NATURE.
This short film begins with a birds eye view of Rock Ferry's name-sake, historical Wairau river crossing site circa 1880's, through to the development of Rock Ferry's three vineyards- The Corners Vineyard, Marlborough (1980's), Trig Hill Vineyard, Central Otago(2003) and Orchard Vineyard, Marlborough (2007). Stunning footage illustrates pivotal events for Rock Ferry Wines, including the adoption of organic viticulture in 2006, the development of the Rock Ferry Winery in 2009 and opening of the Cellar Door & Cafe in 2011. Rock Ferry
—the wine company took the name from a landmark site on Marlborough’s Wairau River. Originally the place where early settlers crossed the Wairau River, Rock Ferry is now self-contained cottage accommodation.
But the natural beauty of this landmark site remains and inspired Tom Hutchison & Fiona Harvey, in 2005, to name their emerging wine label after this remarkable place.
Tom Hutchison arrived in Marlborough in the early 1990’s where he met Fiona Harvey, a local originally from Pelorus Sound and they began growing grapes under contract for local premium wine producers.
Tom and Fiona purchased Rock Ferry Cottage in the early 2000’s and set it up as self-contained accommodation. When the time came to create their own wine label in 2005, Tom & Fiona used the Rock Ferry name as inspiration for their natural winegrowing approach.
They embarked on converting their vineyards to an organic farming regime in 2006. Right from the first wines produced, a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and a Blanc de Blancs from the 2005 vintage.
Tom & Fiona employed the exceptional talents of winemaker Allan McWilliams where Allan continues to this day.
SINGLE VINEYARD
made in small volumes and sourced from unique parcels within our company owned vineyards. These wines represent the pinnacle of varietal and site-specific expression and are only released from the best vintages.
ESTATE WINES
currently represented by our 3rd Rock label, blended from grapes grown in various blocks within our company owned vineyards. They are representative of regional and sub-regional varietal characters, specifically Marlborough’s Rapaura and Central Otago’s Bendigo sub-regions.
SPARKLING WINES
made in the ‘traditional method’ and made simply because we can! These wines are a celebration of our vineyard sites and the wonderful winegrowing climate that is New Zealand’s South Island.
CAFÉ
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
We opened our Cellar Door and Cafe in September 2011. Converted from an earlier home of Tom and Fiona's, it still has that welcoming warm feel.
Based around seasonally inspired cooking and our range of organically grown wines, the Cellar Door and Cafe is a great showcase for the honest, down-to-earth produce that New Zealand's South Island is justifiably famous for.
A familial air surrounds you. First time visitors at our vineyard cafe often describe a feeling they can't put their finger on. Like they are coming home. Something to do with the infectious laughter bubbling from the kitchen and the mostly organic food cooked with love and attention.
Lots of locals, of course, do come back. They're part of the family too.

Situated on the Orchard Vineyard we converted a fruit packing house to our winery in time for the 2009 vintage. You will find no receival bin here - our grapes are hand harvested and hand sorted across a table. Mixing the modern with the traditional, we have small stainless steel tanks among traditional Burgundian puncheons, French cuves and French oak barriques for ageing.
‘A modern take on tradition’ sums up our winemaking philosophy, making authentic wine is very important to us, as well as making the best wines we can. We try and pick grapes on ‘fruit’ days, in accordance with the biodynamic calendar, and thereafter we choose fruit days to work with these wines. We find this works with the rhythm of nature and makes better wine. We allow natural yeasts the ability to do their thing wherever possible and we use sulfur sparingly and bottle with minimal fining and filtration.
Embodying the old world philosophy of oak supporting fruit in wine we use a range of traditional oak vessels. For example, we use puncheons for our white wines and for some of our Central Otago Pinot Noir to express the floral characters of the fruit. Our wines are released when they are ready, or as the French say éleve, which means we allow the wines to mature. and wine that sommeliers love

Days 19 & 20: Marlborough Wine Country! New Zealand's most famous wine region by drone!
Today, I visited the home of my favourite wine - New Zealand's Marlborough wine region on the South Island. In addition to the beautiful wines (especially its distinct passionfruity Sauvignon Blanc), the scenery is truly spectacular - the valley is surrounded by mountains and there are endless symmetrical rows of vines.
I stayed in an Airbnb in Blenheim (the centre of the region) and visited Brancott Estate, Highfield Terravin, and Rock Ferry. I was told to visit Cloudy Bay but didn't have time.
Check out the footage by drone!

New Zealand Trip: Day 7 - Marlborough Wine Tasting
This famous linguist once said that of all the phrases in the English language, of all the endless combinations of words in all of history, that 'cellar door' is the most beautiful.
Today we hired electric bicycles and pedaled through several vineyards and even a brewery! We found our way to Cloudy Bay, Scott, Moa, Hunters, and Rock Ferry. Shout out to the owner of Spy Valley Vineyard who stopped us on the road to give us a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc (very tasty!).
The Crossings Wine - Marlborough, New Zealand
The Crossings winery and vineyards are located in the Marlborough region at the north eastern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. It is set in a special place where early European settlers first crossed the fast flowing waters of the Awatere River in Marlborough and where the original township of Seddon was located.
