Derby native returns to college after losing both legs in car wreck | The Brett and Sierra Show
Colby Liston is a 2012 Derby High School graduate and stand out athlete who was enrolled at KU for the upcoming school year. Saturday morning, August 25th, Liston signed his intent as a walk on with KU's track team. The following morning he was involved in a freak accident in Lawrence that resulted in the amputation of the lower portions of both his legs.
Liston was an exceptional football player and track team member for Derby High School. And much like the sudden accident that has recently changed the course of his life, Liston also dealt with adversity as a high school athlete. During the final game of the regular football season, Colby Liston tore his ACL. That injury was immediately followed by surgery and a rehab process that not only kept him from post-season football action, but also kept him from participating in track his senior year.
Undeterred, Liston was committed to not letting injury restrict his opportunities for collegiate level sports. He spent hours in the gym regaining strength. He trained to resume his endurance. As he had for two summers prior, Liston worked as a lifeguard at Rock River Rapids Aquatic Park, even receiving accolades from his peers for the initiative he showed as a dedicated employee. Liston proved his return to competitive sports as he ended his summer participating in a local triathlon. Liston's physical condition had been restored and he looked forward to his ability to be an asset to the KU track team this spring.
Colby Liston's resolve has been tested once, and he assures the community that once again he will overcome. While he may be faced with much greater physical challenges with this injury, his commitment and determination will not waver. As best summed up by his 9 year old brother Reid Liston, Colby is going to be OK, because he's tough!
15 Sep 2010 Tornado - Derby Kansas
A tornado was spotted on the ground 7 miles west of Derby, Kansas on 14 Sep 10. This video was taken from Derby looking to the west shortly after the sighting. The tornado itself isn't visible from this vantage point, but the violent churning of the skies can clearly be seen. The audio is from a local radio station covering the storm outbreak.
Experience Wichita's new Splash Aqua Park
Eagle reporter Matt Riedl was the first person to take a run-through of Splash Aqua Park, which opens Saturday at I-235 and Seneca. It's an inflatable obstacle course that floats on a sand pit, and it's unlike any other water park in Wichita.
