Madrid:
Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. The city has almost 3.3 million inhabitants and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.5 million. It is the third-largest city in the European Union (EU), surpassed only by London and Berlin, and its monocentric metropolitan area is the third-largest in the EU, smaller only than those of London and Paris. The municipality covers 604.3 km2 (233.3 sq mi).Madrid lies on the River Manzanares in the centre of both the country and the Community of Madrid (which comprises the city of Madrid, its conurbation and extended suburbs and villages); this community is bordered by the autonomous communities of Castile and León and Castile-La Mancha.
The population of Madrid has overall increased since the city became the capital of Spain in the mid-16th century, and has stabilised at approximately 3 million since the 1970s.
From 1970 until the mid-1990s, the population dropped. This phenomenon, which also affected other European cities, was caused in part by the growth of satellite suburbs at the expense of the downtown region within the city proper. This also occurred during a period of slowed growth in the European economy.
The demographic boom accelerated in the late 1990s and early first decade of the 21st century due to immigration in parallel with a surge in Spanish economic growth. According to census data, the population of the city grew by 271,856 between 2001 and 2005.
The Community of Madrid is the EU-Region with the highest average life expectancy at birth. The average life expectancy was 82.2 years for males and 87.8 for females in 2016.
As the capital city of Spain, the city has attracted many immigrants from around the world. In 2015, about 89.8% of the inhabitants were Spanish citizens, while people of other citizenships, including immigrants from Latin America, Europe, Asia, North Africa and West Africa, represented 10.2% of the population.

SPAIN: PLIGHT OF CUBAN COMMUNITY IN MADRID
Spanish/Eng/Nat
Cooling relations between Spain and Cuba have highlighted the plight of a small colony of Cubans living in Madrid.
While many members of Spain's Cuban community say they're happily integrated into Spanish life, others yearn to return to their home country.
Memories of their tropical roots are nurtured by exiled Cubans thousands of miles from home.
While most of those who fled from Cuba after the revolution of 1959 stayed in the Caribbean, some went further afield, returning to Spain, the country of their ancestors.
Unlike the big Cuban communities of Miami and Puerto Rico, Cubans in Madrid have to work hard to preserve their identity.
But some, like guitarist Flores Chaviano, say they have integrated into Spanish life and have no intention of returning to their homeland.
Chaviano has made a career for himself playing Cuban music and has been rewarded with the musical directorship of the conservatory in the city of Segovia.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
I've been able to realise myself as an artist and as a person, which is most important. In this sense I feel completely satisfied with my decision. My experience has been very positive, my family and I have integrated ourselves completely into life in Spain, and
there are no great differences between the Cuban and Spanish ways of life as they have common roots.
SUPER CAPTION: Flores Chaviano, Cuban musician
But success in their adopted culture doesn't necessarily alleviate the pain of their exile.
Tony Evora has won renown in Spain with paintings depicting Cuban themes.
But he says he has never abandoned his dreams of returning to the land of his childhood.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We are devastated souls, if that's what you mean. Who wants to be in exile, for goodness sake, so far away from our island? For people who live in countries like Miami of Puerto Rico or Venezuela, they have the climate and an environment full of Cubans,
which makes them feel much more at home, but for people who live in England, in France, in Spain, in Italy, it's much harder.
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Evora, Cuban painter
Many of the five-thousand Cuban families living in Spain have Spanish ancestry, so they had no difficulty getting used to the food or language.
But they still feel the need to organise regular get-togethers to exchange memories and reminiscences of their homeland.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
Well, the problem is that on the one side exile unites people in the pain they feel in separation, then again there are great differences in that they have to make a living separately, which isn't simple. The legend that we are all paid by the CIA is an
impossibility, they don't have the money for that. the value of this meeting, apart from the musical worth, is that we see each other, talk to each other and remind each other of
ourselves. That helps Cuba and helps the Cubans.
SUPER CAPTION: Carlos Cabrera, publisher of Encuentro, Cuban cultural magazine
Less vociferous in their condemnation of Cuba's communist regime than the communities of the Florida seaboard, Spain's Cuban colony has long served as an unofficial bridge between Cuba and Europe.
The decision of Spain's new centre-right government to suspend aid to Cuba will make it more difficult for them to continue fulfilling this role.

Spanish climbing is all about limestone sport routes, right? Wrong! Spain may be known internationally for limestone venues like El Chorro and Santa Linya, but the country has far more to offer than tufa climbs and pocket-pulling. Much like many of its European neighbours, Spain has some quality granite climbing areas but outside of La Pedriza, these have gone largely unnoticed by the wider community. The granite playground of Cavallers is a great example of one such spot. Located in Northern Spain, close to the border with France, Cavallers offers both bouldering and sport climbing with perfect temperatures during the Summer months. Bifurcated by a large dam, the area has upper and lower sectors with almost 1,000 boulder problems split between them. The sport routes are for the most part technical, slab climbing affairs, which benefit from excellent bolting and the occasional chicken head to give some respite from the crimps! If you're looking for something a little different from your next Spanish sojourn, Cavallers is a fantastic choice. Park up the van (it's free) and set to exploring the wonderful food, culture and climbing that the valley has to offer!

Places to see in ( Madrid - Spain ) Malasana
Places to see in ( Madrid - Spain ) Malasana
Malasaña is a happening, student-friendly area, with streets filled with coffee shops, bakeries and vintage clothing stores. The Plaza del 2 de Mayo, a historic square lined with lively bars and weekend market stalls, is a popular meeting spot. At night, edgy dance and rock clubs host live bands and DJs, and the Conde Duque cultural center shows art and open-air movies in its 18th-century halls and courtyards.
Malasaña is to the west of Chueca and to the east of Argüelles. It is surrounded by several metro stations and is a central neighbourhood of Madrid. Residents include Esperanza Aguirre, the former President of the Community of Madrid, amongst other politicians and several artists. It was the center of the movida movement in late 1970s and 1980s Madrid.
Malasaña is a vibrant neighborhood and a center for the 'hipster' phenomenon, full of lively bars and clubs overflowing with young people. Its creative and counter-cultural roots, which stretch back several decades, have led to the area's distinctly unique musical and artistic tastes. Its streets are currently being renovated, making it a much more attractive quarter. It's one of the classic areas for partying the night away. The area's center is the Plaza del Dos de Mayo (in commemoration of a popular uprising on May 2, 1808, brutally repressed by the French troops and which started the Spanish Independence War). This plaza hosts a large festival on the same day. Botellons (a meeting of people drinking openly on the street, often before going to bars or discos) are common in this neighbourhood. Large ones were held in Plaza de dos de Mayo before the police stopped the nightly practice after a festival turned awry in 2006. Botellon´s involving up to 200 people happen and the plaza where it occurs changes depending on how the police crack down on them.
The night life is diverse in Malasaña, though the most common themes are non-pretentious style places (alternative, funk, mainstream), mixed places (including some conspicuous LGBT, which have created a small gay scene distinct from that of nearby Chueca) and colourful or bohemian cafes. There are one or two bars for hard rock and metal, house, nudists, BDSM, gothic, Latin, classic, 1980s, hip-hop and other non-mainstream genres.
Commercially, Malasaña has many fashion boutiques as well as shops for design and niche market products. They are often cutting-edge shops or feature progressive designers and products. They are often economical and rarely mainstream. There are many second-hand vintage shops, used book stores and unique gift shops. Calle Espíritu Santo represents the melange of Malasaña by having, on one full block alone, a retro shop, butchers with uncommon meats, a fancy pastry shop, two vintage shops, a small florist, vegetable shop, five bars, three bohemian cafes, a retro food shop, two ethnic restaurants, two mid range restaurants and a couple more traditional bars along with two hip-hop clothing shops.
The architecture in Malasaña is rather uniform, with most buildings ranging from 4 to 6 levels, 3 to 5 windows wide, each building painted a uniform colour, almost all windows with French balconies and rare ornamentation. Rents are high for small space and some buildings are very exclusive.
