Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia - Turkey
In a spectacular landscape, entirely sculpted by erosion, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns – the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century – can also be seen there.

Avanos travel | Cappadocia, Turkey
Avanos, Cappadocia, Turkey travel, Avanos Turkey pottery
Travel Videos (Subscribe Now) ????
Avanos, located on the Kızılırmak River (literally Red River), is a town famous for its beautiful pottery that has been produced there for millennia. The production process uses the clay extracted from Kızılırmak, with a characteristic reddish hue. However, Avanos is not only a ceramic workshop but also a charming town where it is possible to stroll along a riverside promenade. It is also an alternative accommodation base for exploring Cappadocia.
Restaurants
Surprisingly, it is relatively difficult to find a tasty meal in the restaurant in Avanos. Based on the observation of Turkish tourists we can conclude that the most popular eateries in town are McDonald's and Mado. McDonald's does not need further elaboration, but its popularity in Avanos is amazing - at lunchtime it is practically besieged. It is the only McDonald's restaurant in Cappadocia, and it is located on the northern bank of the river, on Atatürk Street No. 53.
On the opposite bank of the Kızılırmak River, in a large park, there is Mado café. This Turkish network began its career as an ice cream parlour, but over time its menu has been extended not only to other desserts but also to breakfasts and lunch dishes.
We have personally tested two restaurants serving Turkish cuisine in Avanos. The first of them was Urfa Sofrasi, boasting the preparation of typical dishes of the south-eastern Anatolia. Unfortunately, in our eyes, it fared very poorly as the portions were modest, the prices - unexpectedly high, and placing an order - very problematic because of the lack of dishes listed on the menu. The restaurant is located in the centre of Avanos, on Atatürk Street.
The second restaurant we tested - Restoran Zelve (38.719214, 34.847806) - fared much better. The spacious interior, an elegant design and a waiters bustling about made a slightly intimidating impression. Meanwhile, it turned out that it was worth a look. We welcomed plates of appetisers, especially cheese and hot bread, served while we waited for the main course. The star of the menu is so-called Cappadocia kebab, pared by the local chef. These are succulent cuts of beef roasted with vegetables in a clay pot.
Orientation
Avanos is divided into two parts - the northern and the southern ones - by Kızılırmak River, flowing through its centre. The areas located on the banks of the river are the very centre of Avanos, with hotels, guesthouses, offices, and ceramic workshops. The banks of Kızılırmak are also a great place for evening walks or a photo session with ducks. An interesting idea for tourists is the possibility to cruise on the river in a gondola in the Venetian style.
The route D300 from Nevşehir to Kayseri is the southern bypass of Avanos, and the road to Göreme through Çavuşin leads to the south from Avanos.
Nearby Avanos
In the vicinity of Avanos, it is worth to visit Sarıhan caravanserai, built during the Seljuk period. It stands 7 km to the east of Avanos centre (38.711799, 34.909582) and it is difficult to miss while travelling along the D300 road to Kayseri. In the evenings, whirling dervish ceremonies are organised there, for the entertainment of tourists, but the building can also be visited during the daytime. Admission is payable and costs 3 TL.
Aficionados of prehistory can search for two prehistoric mounds in the vicinity of Avanos. Avanos Tumulus is located 7 km west of the city (38.717899, 34.768214) and Zank Tumulus - 4 km to the north-west of Sarilar village.
In the district of Avanos there are also two places extremely popular among the tourists - Özkonak underground city (38.8068, 34.8414) and Çavuşin village (38.6735, 34.8395). In Çavuşin, there are ancient rock churches. Less well known but also very attractive sight of the district is Belha Monastery (38.790599, 34.823799).
Cappadocia, Turkey - Asia Minor Tours - Unravel Travel TV
Cappadocia is a historical region in Central Turkey. It is a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage.
The area is a popular tourist destination, as it has many areas with unique geological, historic, and cultural features. The region is located southwest of the major city Kayseri, which has airline and railway service to Ankara and Istanbul. The most important towns and destinations in Cappadocia are Urgup, Goreme, Ihlara Valley, Selime, Guzelyurt, Uchisar, Avanos and Zelve. Among the underground cities worth seeing are Derinkuyu, Kaymakli, Gaziemir and Ozkanak. The best historic mansions and cave houses for tourist stays are in Urgup, Goreme, Guzelyurt and Uchisar.
Hot-air ballooning is very popular in Cappadocia and is available in Goreme. Trekking is enjoyed in Ihlara Valley, Monastery Valley (Guzelyurt), Urgup and Goreme.
Sedimentary rocks formed in lakes and streams and ignimbrite deposits that erupted from ancient volcanoes approximately 9 to 3 million years ago, during the late Miocene to Pliocene epochs, underlie the Cappadocia region. The rocks of Cappadocia near Göreme eroded into hundreds of spectacular pillars and minaret-like forms. People of the villages at the heart of the Cappadocia Region carved out houses, churches and monasteries from the soft rocks of volcanic deposits. Göreme became a monastic centre in 300—1200 AD. The first period of settlement in Göreme goes back to the Roman period. The Yusuf Koç, Ortahane, Durmus Kadir and Bezirhane churches in Göreme, and houses and churches carved into rocks in the Uzundere, Bağıldere and Zemi Valleys all illustrate history and can be seen today. The Göreme Open Air Museum is the most visited site of the monastic communities in Cappadocia (see Churches of Göreme, Turkey) and is one of the most famous sites in central Turkey. The complex contains more than 30 carved-from-rock churches and chapels, some having superb frescoes inside, dating from the 9th century to the 11th century.

Uchisar, Cappadocia, Turkey
Uchisar, Cappadocia, Turkey, 2004 - village and castle
From the heights of the Uçhisar citadel, you have a magnificent and unrivaled view of the whole region.
Uçhisar Castle / Landlord's Castle, (The big rock on top of the hill in Uçhisar). The view from the top of this massive rock with a number of rooms carved into it is well worth the price of admission. The path to the top is strenuous but short, mostly stairs and relatively safe. 5 TL. edit
There are also many similar hand carved rooms and tunnels you can explore in the nearby Pigeon valley. Less stairs, perhaps less safe.

Cappadocia, a semi-arid region in central Turkey, is known for its distinctive “fairy chimneys,” tall, cone-shaped rock formations clustered in Monks Valley, Göreme and elsewhere. Other notables sites include Bronze Age homes carved into valley walls by troglodytes (cave dwellers) and later used as refuges by early Christians. The 100m-deep Ihlara Canyon houses numerous rock-face churches.

Cappadocia - The incredible rock houses and underground cities of Cappadocia
The region of Cappadocia in central Turkey is home to one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world – deep valleys and soaring rock formations dotted with homes, chapels, tombs, temples and entire subterranean cities harmoniously carved into the natural landforms.
Cities, empires and religions have risen and fallen around these unique underground havens, yet they remain occupied to this day. Through the ages, the Hittites, Persians, Alexander the Great, Rome, The Byzantine Empire, Ottoman Empire, and Turkey have all governed this spectacular region of Central Anatolia.
Cappadocia covers the region between the cities of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos, the sites of Karain, Karlık, Yeşilöz, Soğanlı and the subterranean cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu. One hundred square miles with more than 200 underground villages and tunnel towns complete with hidden passages, secret rooms and ancient temples and a remarkably storied history of each new civilisation building on the work of the last, make Cappadocia one of the world's most striking and largest cave-dwelling regions of the world.
The landscape of Cappadocia
Standing 1,000 meters above sea level, the Cappadocian relief is a high plateau, pierced by volcanic peaks that create a visually stunning landscape, which includes dramatic expanses of rock, shaped, into towers, cones, valleys, and caves. From a distance, Cappadocia appears like a deserted land, however, with closer examination, it is possible to spot the small, winding paths and beautifully-carved homes scattered within the unique land formations.

MY FILM MAKING KIT ►
David scratches another one off of his bucket list with this epic trip
through the region of Cappadocia. Watch as we show you the top things to see and do in Cappadocia.
First stop is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Goreme Open Air Museum. This area supported a large Christian community for several centuries. By the 4th century, Saint Basel had founded various religious settlements in the area. The Göreme Open Air Museum is a testament to St. Basil’s influence – it is a place where daily worship was carried out in seclusion.
Then onto some arts and crafts. Turkey is known for its intricate hand woven rugs (Kilim), and Cappadocia is a great place to see them being made and also to purchase them if you are interested. David toured Gallery Cappadocia and spoke with the manager about why people should come see the rugs being made. Also, the selection here is amazing! Shopping for rugs in Istanbul can be a headache if you don’t speak the language, which is why many tourists instead prefer to shop for them in Cappadocia where there are less crowds.
David then heads to the town of Avanos to visit the Firca pottery workshop. There, the artists are working meticulously to freehand patterns and calligraphy. Visitors will get a demonstration on how the pottery is formed and will get the chance to browse an extensive inventory of remarkable quality.
We can then see the cluster of fairy chimneys in Cavusin Village, during which David gives us an explanation of how these unusual rock formations are formed. Basically, wind erosion leave each rocky mound with a “hat.”
The Kaymakli Underground City (UNESCO) is another great example of the wonder Cappadocia holds. During the Roman Era, Christian communities used them to hide from religious persecution. There are several underground cities in Cappadocia, many of which are interconnected with tunnels. Kaymakli is several layers deep, with long passages, narrow steps, and a complex tunnel system connecting the rooms. Definitely one of the top things to see and do in Cappadocia!
Back outside David tours the Valley of the Monks in the village of Pasabag. Pasabag valley contains some of the most striking fairy chimneys in Cappadocia. After the hike, David strolls the town of Mustafapasa.
A tour of the Saruhan was an interesting experience, especially since the building was used as an inn for traders traveling along the Silk Road. David continues his journey into the Zelve Valley, the village of Urgup to see some of Cappadocia’s most famous fairy chimneys, and up to the top of the castle of Uchisar to get fantastic panoramic views.
Finally, David shows us the number 1 thing to do in Cappadocia… take a hot air balloon ride! This is the best way to experience Cappadocia from above and appreciate the distinct rock formations unlike anywhere else on earth.
If you’re planning on heading to Cappadocia, we highly recommend Euphrates Tours. They helped us explore this fascinating region and do everything you watched in this video.

One of the must do things if you are in Cappadoccia , is to take a day tour of Cappadocia. There are two popular tours – the Red Tour and the Green Tour.
We took the Red Tour, which covers the northern part of Cappadocia.
The first place we visited was Uçhisar, a settlement in Cappadocia, in Nevşehir Province, Turkey. The town is 7 kilometres east of Nevşehir and we covered it in the previous episode (link below)
Uçhisar, which is situated on the edge of Göreme National Park, is dominated by a 60 metre high castle-mountain, which is visible over a wide distance and has the form of a large cylindrical tower. This massif is crisscrossed by numerous underground passageways and rooms, which are now mostly blocked or impassable. They served as residential areas, as well as cloisters in Byzantine times. Originally, around 1,000 people lived in the castle, but it is no longer inhabited today. The landscape is also marked by the fairy chimneys scattered through it.
Next, we visited the The Goreme Open-Air Museum. The Open-Air Museum resembles a vast monastic complex composed of scores of refectory monasteries placed side-by-side, each with its own fantastic church. It is obviously the first sight to be visited by any traveler in Cappadocia, standing as it does in the very centre of the region with easy access from all directions. It is only 15 minutes walk (1.5 km or 1 mile) from Goreme village centre. It contains the finest of the rock-cut churches, with beautiful frescoes (wall paintings) whose colors still retain all their original freshness. It also presents unique examples of rock hewn architecture and fresco technique. The Goreme Open Air Museum has been a member of UNESCO World Heritage List since 1984, and was one of the first two UNESCO sites in Turkey.
The area covered by this Open Air Museum forms a coherent geographical entity and represents historical unity. There are eleven refectories within the Museum, with rock-cut churches tables and benches. Each is associated with a church. Most of the churches in Goreme Open Air Museum belong to the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries.
The entrance fee to the museum is 25 TL per person. In summer, it is better to visit the museum early in the morning or late afternoon, instead of mid-day. There are many churches and chapels in Goreme Open Air Museum but the most important ones are: Nunnery, St. Barbara Church, Apple (Elmali) Church, Snake (Yilanli) Church, Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise), Carikli (Sandals) Church and Buckle (Tokali) Church.
The third place we visited was the Love Valley. Love Valley is a interesting area located between Avanos and Goreme road named after the phallic shaped fairy chimney formations spread through the valley. One gets plenty of photo-ops here.
