Philippines: Two Tons Of Platinum Discovered - 1995
English/Nat
Government officials in the Philippines have uncovered two tons of platinum worth around 26 (m)million US dollars.
The hoard is believed to be part of a massive amount of treasure stolen by a Japanese general in World War Two.
For decades, treasure hunters have searched for riches rumoured abandoned by retreating Japanese forces at the end of World War II.
Now their quest seems to have been vindicated - with the discovery of the supposed Yamashita treasure.
According to financial experts, the two-foot, bell-shaped lump of platinum - a metal more valuable than gold - would bring about 26 (m) million dollars on international markets.
Tomoyuki Yamashita was the commander of Japanese forces in the Philippines towards the end of World War Two. He was rumoured to have gathered a huge amount of treasure which was buried in 170 locations in the Philippines.
Known as the Tiger of Malaya, he was executed for war crimes in 1946 and treasure seekers have been looking ever since.
Government agents seized the platinum Sunday from a villager in Lallo, 250 miles north-east of Manila.
Apparently a Japanese treasure hunter found the platinum in 1993 in the sea off Cagayan province, and gave it to the villager for safekeeping.
But on his return the villager refused to give it back - so the treasure hunter reported the find to the authorities who have now claimed the precious metal.
There is no certainty the treasure is part of the Yamashita hoard but the agent in charge of the operation believes the rumours to be true.
SOUNDBITE:
Allegedly, the informant in the case was the a son of a Japanese general, during World War Two, and before his father died, he was informed that there were hidden treasures of this kind in the place and he was provided with the necessary map in locating the treasure.
SUPER CAPTION: Vincento de Guzman, National Bureau of Investigation
By law, such treasures are considered government property.
But according to officials, the unfortunate finder will be given a substantial share of the proceeds from its sale.

Philippine Gold: Treasures of Forgotten Kingdoms Exhibit
During opening weekend I visited the Asia Society Museum in NYC to see for myself the wonderful gold artifacts from the Philippines that depict our rich heritage and precolonial history prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. In old Spanish texts from Francisco Alcina, the most well known chronicler of the Bisayans to Antonio Pigafetta, the scholar who joined Ferdinand Magellan when they first landed in our shores, the mention of gold was very much prevalent throughout the islands. Our ancestors, from the slaves to the nobility, wore gold, most being passed down from generation to generation as bahandi, or heirlooms. From gold necklaces, bracelets, rings, armlets, to even sashes, belts, and the hilts of their daggers were made of gold. Their religious objects from bowls to figures of deities were also intricately designed and made of gold. They would often bury these gold objects so the dead person can wear them in the afterlife. It was also a form of acceptance in the afterlife as among the Bisayans according to Francisco Alcina in his 1668 records, the god of happiness and of Saad, the resting place of the souls, once upon receiving the soul from the primordial sea goddess Magwayen on a bangka, he would ask them a question. Surrounded by the ancestors he would ask if they were that certain person who died. However if the soul did not have with them any gold or bahandi, they would not recognize them. From records we know that the Spaniards often ransacked known burial sites for the purpose of taking these gold buried with the dead.
To see the gold artifacts yourselves I invite anyone who can come to NYC and the Asia Society Museum to come and take a step back in time. The exhibit runs from September 11 2015 - January 3, 2016 and is located at:
725 Park Avenue

SURIGAO TREASURE:Part 2of8 OF GINTONG PAMANA
Part 2 of the Gintong Pamana episode that aired on June 8, 2008 on ABS-CBN.
Video Summary
In 1981, Berto Morales, a farmer employed as a bulldozer operator in an irrigation project in Surigao
struck gold. He discovered a treasure trove of gold ornaments while bringing down a hill to collect
filling materials.
The discovery, hitherto unknown to the public, is among the largest collection of Philippine
archaeological gold in the country as well as in the rest of the world.
Recovered in association with 10th to 13th century Chinese ceramics, the gold ornaments show
similarities in form and iconography with artifacts of other cultures in the region. Experts believe the
discovery will rewrite history.
Nothing of this scale and magnitude and magnificence has ever been seen before, says Dr. Florina
Capistrano-Baker, former curator of the Ayala Museum, of the gold find.
Gold specialist Dr. John Miksic of the National University of Singapore describes the Surigao treasure as the single most important tangible heritage of the country.
Experts say jewelers today cannot imitate or even come close to the quality of the workmanship of the
intricate designs of our ancestors gold.
Part of the Surigao treasure is the Sacred Thread, which is worn during ceremonies and weighs more than four kilos. Baker says the belt-like object is so heavy a mannequin broke because of its sheer weight.
PROBE reporter, Cheche Lazaro, searches for Berto Morales in Surigao. From then on, Lazaro uncovers that Bertos gold discovery takes many twist and turns -- involving threats to his life and family.
With the help of historians and experts, Lazaro reveals an amazing story about Philippines forgotten
civilization before the Spanish colonization of the archipelago in the 16th century and how the
archaeological gold artifacts associated with the pre-colonization period point to a sophisticated
civilization -- something that will give us a sense of identity and pride as a people.
Supported by historical accounts about pre-colonial Philippines, the Surigao gold collection show that
we were important players in the region 1,000 years ago and that gold was an important link between our country and the rest of our neighbors.

who made these objects? Were they created by the inhabitants of the islands now known as the Philippines, or were they brought in by foreign traders?
The answer is, 'We don't know', We assume that they are locally made until proven otherwise, whoever made them was exposed to Hindu beliefs.
