The Vizhinjam Rock-cut Temple. (വിഴിഞ്ഞം ഗുഹാക്ഷേത്രം )

Presumably built in 7th or 8th century, this Rock-cut cave temple is one of the earliest rock cut temples in Kerala. This temple is dedicated to Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi and has unfinished sculptures of Lord Shiva holding a bow and dancing Lord Shiva with his wife Goddess Parvathy can also be seen on the sides.

There are rock-cut sculptures dating from the 18th century in the cave temple at Vizhinjam located to the south of Kovalam junction. The granite cave here encloses a one-celled shrine with a loose sculpture of Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi. The outer wall of the cave depicts half-complete relics of the Hindu God Shiva with Goddess Parvathi.

The Kaviyoor Thrikkakkudi Cave Temple, popularly known as the Rock Cut Cave Temple is an ancient temple carved on a massive rock located at Kaviyoor near Thiruvalla in the Pathanamthitta district. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is also having archaeological importance because of its close similarity to the Pallava style of architecture. Besides devotees, many historians and travelers visit this rock-cut temple in order to watch its stone engravings.

കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ചെറിയ ഗുഹ ക്ഷേത്രം എന്താണെന്നറിയാമോ? തിരുവനന്തപുരം ജില്ലയിലെ വിഴിഞ്ഞത്താണ് പ്രശസ്തമായ വിഴിഞ്ഞം ഗുഹാക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ആയ് രാജവംശ കാലത്താണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിച്ചതെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. പണ്ട് ഈ രാജവംശത്തിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമായിരുന്നു വിഴിഞ്ഞം. തിരുവനന്തപുരം നഗരഹൃദയത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 17 കിലോമീറ്റർ മാറി, കടല്‍ത്തീരത്തായാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ കുറിച്ച് ഏറെ പ്രശസ്തമായ ഒരു കഥയും നിലനിൽക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

The Undavalli Caves, a monolithic example of Indian rock-cut architecture and one of the finest testimonials to ancient viswakarma sthapathis, are located in Undavalli of Guntur district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The caves are located 6 km south west from Vijayawada. The caves are surrounded by the green countryside. From the high hill above the cave overlooking the Krishna River many fine specimens of rock cut architecture can be seen.

Ancient Rock Cut Temple In India | Located in Kaviyoor Pathanamthitta | Kerala 2018

Kaviyoor is a small village, and was one of the ancient 64 Brahmin settlements of Kerala. It is located on the western bank of the river Manimala in the taluk of Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, India.

An ancient rock cut temple “Kaviyoor Thrikkakkudi Cave Temple” is located here, carved on a huge rock and the carved rooms and sculptures are well preserved. This Cave Temple is of historical importance and is preserved as a monument by the Archaeological Department.
 
The temple has a verandah with a sculpture of Lord Ganapathi carved into the wall and inner sanctum containing a tall shivalinga, all carved out of one huge rock. It bears close resemblance to the Pallava style of architecture. The engravings here are among the earliest specimens of stone sculptures in Kerala. Enshrined in a square cave is the main deity of the shrine, Lord Shiva, represented in the ' Shivalinga' which is about three feet high and carved out of rock.

The shrine also has idols of Ganapathy, Maharshi and Dwarapalakas. It was constructed during the rule of the Pallava dynasty who reigned over South India from 608 to 850 AD.
