The Rock of Cashel was one of my favorite places to visit in Ireland, not only because of its long history but also because it's surrounded by beautiful green pastures. The site was originally a royal residence in the 4th century and then was given to the Catholic Church in 1101. St. Patrick came here in 450 and brought Christianity to Ireland. The last bishop left here in 1749. There were many battles fought here, including some fought against the Vikings. The buildings here date from the 12th, 13th, and 15th centuries.

Rock of Cashel, Ireland's Sacred Ruins
One of the main places you'll want to see when visiting Ireland is the Rock of Cashel, Ireland's most important medieval site.
From a distance it is a most unexpected and wonderful pile rising on three hundred feet of rock in the middle of an immense flat empty plain, like some gigantic magic palace, suspended in air.
The picturesque complex has a character of its own and is one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe. A unique, historic cathedral, castle, and round tower.
At your feet lies the Vale of Tipperary, an expanse of greenest green stretching unbroken over some of the fairest and most fertile land in Ireland. There is no other historic place of its kind in Ireland situated quite like it, overlooking as good a landscape as the human eye can gaze upon.
From the fourth century to the 12th century it was the residence of the kings of Munster, which was the southern half of Ireland.
Cashel's historical importance dates much further back than the foundation of its Cathedral. Long before the church came to Cashel the pagans held their barbarous rites and ceremonies on this rock. In the middle of the fifth century, St. Patrick arrived there in the course of his extraordinary mission through Ireland. It is said that St. Patrick, converted and baptized King Angus and founded the first Irish Christian church on the Rock of Cashel.
The cathedral walls still stand and form the center of this group of celebrated ruins, which are unparalleled in Ireland for picturesque beauty and antiquarian interest, a noble remnant of early pointed Gothic, with many fascinating relics.

Rock of Cashel, Buildings Timeline
The Rock of Cashel is a large outcrop of limestone that is surrounded by rich land and is used for dairy, tillage, horse breeding and training. From the Rock there are views of distant hills and mountains. The plateau on which the old buildings and graveyard lie, is surrounded by a wall. The graveyard includes a number of high crosses.
The Round Tower was built 917 years ago, in the year 11 hundred. The tower is in a good state of repair. It is 28 metres high. The entrance door is 3.7 metres above ground level. The tower was built using the dry stone method. Some of the stone joints, have been filled with mortar.
Cormac’s Chapel was built 883 years ago, in the year 11 34.
The Chapel is Romanesque in style and was constructed primarily of sandstone. In recent years restoration and preservation work was carried out in order to completely rain-proof the structure. There are twin towers on either side of the junction between the nave and chancel.
The Cathedral was built 747 years ago, in the year 12 70.
The great Celtic cathedral was built in the Gothic style and is now a ruin. It has a cruciform plan, with a central tower. The north transept contains late medieval tombs and grave slabs.
The Tower House is rectangular in plan and was built 577 years ago, in the year 14 40.
The Tower house was a five-story structure and was built as a residence for an archbishop.
The Hall of the Vicar’s Choral was built 567 years ago, in the year 14 50.
It is a two story building. It was built to house minor clerics who sang during cathedral services. Now it is a museum and ticket office.
The roof of the Cathedral was removed 269 years ago, in the year 17 48.
There was a partial collapse of the Tower House 169 years ago, in the year 18 48.
Scully’s cross was erected 147 years ago, in the year 18 70.
This gigantic high cross is a striking monuments and is visible on approaching the Rock. The cross has very fine craft work, with figure sculpture and interlace. It sits on a mausoleum. The top of the cross was broken off by lightning in 1976 and fell to the ground.
Restoration and preservation work was carried out in recent years on Cormac’s Chapel.
Hore Abbey is nearby. A short drive away is Cahir Castle, Athassel Abbey, Fethard medieval walled town. Grantstown Castle is a good example of a Tower house that has been renovated as a private residence.

In 2018 my family and I went on a Slow Travel adventure with our five kids! We explored Ireland, England, and Scotland. The Rock of Cashel was definitely a highlight as we drove through on our way to Dingle!
From Wiki: The Rock of Cashel was the traditional seat of the kings of Munster for several hundred years prior to the Norman invasion. In 1101, the King of Munster, Muirchertach Ua Briain, donated his fortress on the Rock to the Church. The picturesque complex has a character of its own and is one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe. Few remnants of the early structures survive; the majority of buildings on the current site date from the 12th and 13th centuries.
It's an incredible place to visit if you're ever passing through!

Le Rock of Cashel est un site historique majeur d'Irlande. C'est un lieu qui fait partie des circuits touristiques, donc on y rencontre plusieurs groupes de touristes accompagnés d'un guide.
Il est situé sur un piton rocheux qui s'élève à 60 m, surplombant ainsi la petite ville de Cashel.
A l'entrée de la forteresse se trouve le Hall des Choristes (Hall of the Vichars Choral) érigé au XVe siècle. C'est dans ce bâtiment que l'on retrouve la billetterie. Il servait de lieu de répétition pour la chorale. Il abrite également un musée qui présente l'histoire de ce site ainsi que de nombreuses croix.
La cathédrale de Saint Patrick est de style gothique et date du XIIIe siècle. Au centre de la cathédrale s'élève une tour carrée.
Une autre tour, datant du XVe siècle et communément appelée Archbishop's Residence, est collée à la cathédrale et aurait été jadis la résidence de l'archevêque.
La chapelle du Roi Cormac date du XIIe siècle et elle est considérée comme l'une des plus belles chapelles romanes d'Irlande. Cette chapelle abrite même une tombe qui s'avérerait être celle du roi Cormac.
On y retrouve également une tour ronde haute de 28 m érigée au XIIe siècle. Elle servait non seulement à surveiller les abords de la forteresse, mais également à l'entreposage de manuscrits et reliques religieuses.

Visiting the Rock of Cashel in South Tipperary Ireland in September 2010. The Rock of Cashel is also known as Cashel of the Kings and St. Patrick's Rock. This picturesque complex sits atop a plateau and is surrounded by a rock wall. The grounds also have an extensive graveyard which includes a number of high crosses. The structures are a beautiful collection of Celtic art and medieval architecture. A well preserved round tower dates from 1100. Cormac's Chapel was begun in 1127 and is more ornate than most Irish Romanesque churches. Notable features of the building include a barrel-vaulted roof, a carved tympanum over both doorways and a magnificent north doorway and chancel arch. It also contains one of the best preserved Irish frescos from this time period. The Cathedral was built between 1235 and 1270 in a cruciform plan with a central tower. The Hall of the Vicars Choral was built in the fifteenth century and is now the visitor center.
