Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo in Bulgaria
A group of monolithic churches, chapels and monasteries are hewn out of the solid rock, located near the village of Ivanovo, 20 km south of Rousse, inside Rusenski Lom Nature Park. The caves in the region were inhabited by monks from the 1220s to the 17th century, where they hewed out cells, churches and chapels. The complex is noted for its beautiful and well-preserved medieval frescoes.

Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo is a fascinating and beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site in Bulgaria. These were originally hermit retreats occupied by monks, that over time were dug out further and eventually became churches. Following a grant from the Bulgarian king, they were decorated in the 15th century. Although there's quite a few of the churches in the area, this is the only one available for public access. But we didn't mind, because it's absolutely beautiful!

Bulgaria HiLites: Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
The Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo are an integral part of the large monastery complex called St. Michael the Archangel, an exceptional spiritual and literary center of Bulgarian Medieval art. This complex was developed during the time of the second Bulgarian kingdom by church hermits. The 14th-century murals, rock-hewn churches, chapels, monasteries, monk's cells, and unique mural paintings in the style of the Tarnovo and Constantinople School (14th century) survived to this day, having weathered the vicissitudes of history.

The monastery complex owes much of its fame to 13th- and 14th century frescoes, preserved in 5 of the churches, which are thought of as wonderful examples of Bulgarian mediaeval art. The rock premises used by the monks include the St Archangel Michael Chapel (The Buried Church), the Baptistery, the Gospodev Dol Chapel, the St Theodore Church (The Demolished Church) and the main Church, with the 14th century murals in the latter one being arguably the most famous of all in Ivanovo and noted as some of the most representative examples of Palaeologan art.
