Graceland & Beale Street - Memphis, TN
Today while heading east we crossed over the mighty Mississippi River and into Tennessee! Our destination was Memphis, TN where two attractions drew us near! These two attractions were Beale Street, and Graceland the home of Elvis Presley!
We first took a ½ hour scooter ride from the campground to downtown Memphis where we stopped at the Peabody Motel to see the famous Peabody Ducks that swim in the lobby fountain! We then continued to Beale Street where we walked around, listened to some local music, and at dinner at the famous BB King Blues Club!
The following day we were able to walk right beside the campground to the huge Graceland Estate. This included an iPad guided tour of the original house, Graceland, and all of the memorabilia collected over the years of Elvis. It was overwhelming to see all of the gold records, and flashy outfits that Elvis had amassed! We also had a chance to go thru the Elvis Car Museum, and walk thru his 2 jets! The last sight you see is his grave enshrined in the back yard with other family members. This was a great tour!

1957 HOME MOVIE from SEGREGATION ERA MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS CENTRAL HIGH 19604

This silent 16mm home movie shows a trip to the American South in the year 1957. What's interesting about the film is that the filmmaker must have been interested in the Civil Rights movement. He shot footage of the segregation era signage at the Memphis, Tennessee Zoo (:37). It may shock some viewers to understand that in this era, even visits to the zoo were segregated. Blacks could visit the zoo on Thursdays, while whites could go on the other week days including the weekends. He also filmed the Central High School Building in Little Rock, Arkansas (1:36) which looms large in the desegregation of schools.
The film starts with shots of the Mammoth Cave, located in Kentucky. At :34 is the Memphis Zoo entrance and signage. At :45 a bridge on what appears to be Highway 79 is visible. Shots thru the car windshield of the highway and from the passenger window of shacks and homes. At 1:08 is an institutional building which appears to be Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.. At 1:26 a military jeep drives by, possibly National Guard Troops there to enforce the school's integration. At 1:36 is Central High School again. In the fall of 1957 Little Rock became the symbol of state resistance to school desegregation. Arkansas Governor Orval E. Faubus directly questioned the sanctity of the federal court system and the authority of the United States Supreme Court's desegregation ruling while nine African-American high school students sought an education at the all-white Little Rock Central High School. At 1:42 are shots of the Arkansas State Capitol Building. At 1:56 is the Arkansas Governor's Mansion.

Cotton Museum in Memphis, Tennessee
We really enjoyed visiting this museum in downtown Memphis (right down from The Peabody Hotel, where we stayed). This is a fun place to visit when you are in Memphis and if you are interested in learning all about the history of cotton, this is definitely your place! It's also a great place to see a cotton plant, if you've never seen one before. It doesn't take too long to see everything, and you tour it on your own. We also really liked the small gift shop. They have some cute, unique gifts -- all made with cotton -- naturally! :)

Brandon Bailey Harmonica Jam - Memphis Tennessee | TN Vacation
Brandon Bailey is a teen harmonica player from Memphis, Tennessee. Some might even call him a teen sensation. In 2008 he rose through the ranks of several hundred contestants to make the finals of the Orpheum Star Search competition in Memphis, then won the finals by performing the J. Geils Band's harmonica showpiece, Whammer Jammer, with the house band. In the aftermath of that victory, and with the help of occasional YouTube postings and an appearance at last year's Society for the Preservation and Advancement (SPAH) meeting, Brandon has put the harmonica world on notice: there's a new kid on the block. Tennessee has two state flowers. The Purple Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is the state's wildflower and the iris is the state's cultivated flower.
Tennessee has played a critical role in the development of many forms of American popular music, including rock and roll, blues, country music, and rockabilly.
Tennessee has nine official state songs
1. My Homeland, Tennessee, by Nell Grayson Taylor (words) and Roy Lamont Smith (music)

Tennessee trip info:
In the morning our tour continues to Tennessee with a trip through the Great Smoky Mountains. After a stop in Gatlinburg, TN, we will continue on to Pigeon Forge, TN to see the Dixie Stampede Western show, which was created by the great Dolly Parton. During the Christma (Dec. 27th), guests will also have chance to appreciate the exclusive Christmas Special Shows and a brief but exciting The Epiphany of Our Lord Chris performance. We will spend the night in Chattanooga, TN.
Great Smoky Mountains, TN The Great Smoky Mountains are a mountain range rising along the Tennessee–North Carolina border in the southeastern United States. The range is sometimes called the Smoky Mountains and the name is commonly shortened to the Smokies.
Great Smoky Mountains Park This 520,000-acre park on the eastern border of Tennessee is a United States National Park and UNESCO World Heritage. It is the most-visited national park in the United States, and is renown for the beauty of its landscapes.
Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway The Ober Gatlinburg amusement park and ski resort boasts many rides and attractions, but perhaps none are quite as scenic and beautiful as the Aerial Tramway. The cable car brings riders 2.1 miles up the Great Smoky Mountains.
Pigeon Forge, TN Pigeon Forge is a mountain resort city in Sevier County, Tennessee, located in the southeastern United States. Pigeon Forge is primarily a tourist destination. The city's attractions include Dollywood, numerous outlet malls, and music theaters.
Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede In 1988, the first Dixie Stampede opened in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, just outside of Dollywood, Dolly Parton's theme park. The show is still going strong today, and has expanded to two other locations in the American South.
Chattanooga
We will spend the day exploring Chattanooga, TN and the surrounding area. Our day includes heading to Rock City and seeing the Ruby Falls.
Chattanooga, TN Chattanooga is the fourth-largest city in the U.S. state of Tennessee. A unique distinction for Chattanooga is the fact that the city has its own typeface, Chatype, which was launched in August 2012.
Ruby Falls The famous Ruby Falls, an underground waterfall, are a natural phenomenon, and are fed by rainwater and underground springs. The water from the falls flows out of the caverns and eventually joins up with the Tennessee River.
Rock City is as famous for its aggressive mid-19th-century marketing campaigns as for its views and gardens. Still, Rock City does offer a lot to visitors: panoramic views, botanical gardens, and amazing rock formations are all features.
Lookout Mountain Incline Railway This tram has been running almost continually since 1895, and with the exception of an engine update in 1911, it hasn't changed that much. The ride stretches about one mile up the mountain and reaches a grade of 72.7%.
