Hocking Hills State Park, Logan Ohio - Grandma Gatewood Trail - 10-18-12
At Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio, the North Country Trail, Buckeye Trail, and the American Discovery Trail coincide and a six-mile section is designated as the Grandma Gatewood Trail. It connects Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls to Ash Cave. The Appalachian Trail Museum includes information about Grandma Gatewood in its exhibits and in June 2012, she was inducted into the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame.
Emma Rowena Gatewood, better known as Grandma Gatewood (October 25, 1887--June 4, 1973), was an extreme hiker and ultra-light hiking pioneer who was the first woman to hike the 2,168-mile (3,489 km) Appalachian Trail from Mount Oglethorpe in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine solo, and in one season.
Family life:
Gatewood was born in Guyan Township, Gallia County, Ohio. She was a farmer's wife who had eleven children and 24 grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild living at the time of her death at 85.
Hiking:
Gatewood hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1955 at the age of 67, wearing Keds sneakers and carrying an army blanket, a raincoat, and a plastic shower curtain which she carried in a homemade bag slung over one shoulder, thus making her a pioneer of Ultralight backpacking. Local newspapers picked up on her story, leading to a profile in Sports Illustrated when she had reached Connecticut and an appearance on the Today Show.
She had read about it in a National Geographic Magazine. I thought it would be a nice lark, she said, adding It wasn't. Another time she complained For some fool reason, they always lead you right up over the biggest rock to the top of the biggest mountain they can find.
She hiked it again in 1960 and then again at age 75 in 1963, making her the first person to hike the trail three times (though her final hike was completed in sections).[2] She was also credited with being the oldest female thru-hiker by the Appalachian Trail Conference until 2007.
In addition, she walked 2,000 miles (3,200 km) of the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri, to Portland, Oregon, averaging 22 miles (35 km) a day. She traveled to every state of the continental United States.
In 1970, at age 83, while visiting Appalachian Outfitters in Oakton, Virginia she was asked what she thought about the latest lightweight backpacking gear. Emma advised: Make a rain cape, and an over the shoulder sling bag, and buy a sturdy pair of Keds tennis shoes. Stop at local groceries and pick up Vienna sausages... most everything else to eat you can find beside the trail... and by the way those wild onions are not called Ramps... they are Rampians ... a ramp is an inclined plane.
Gatewood was a life member of the National Campers and Hikers Association and the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club. She was Director Emeritus and a lifetime member of the Buckeye Trail Association.

Logan Corp Cal Nelson
At age 72, J. Calvin Cal Nelson will retire Dec. 31 for a second time as president and chief operating officer of Logan Corp., a mining supplier based in Huntington, W.V. This time looks like it will be for good, effectively ending a career in manufacturing and sales that spans more than half a century.
Nelson's first retirement in 2004 lasted long enough to build a barn on his 93-acre Cabell County, W.V., property. Then in 2007, C. McD. Joe England, Logan chairman and chief executive officer, summoned him back.
There are no guarantees in business, says Nelson. Successful succession is a dice roll.
Initially, Nelson agreed to return as acting president for six months. That was later extended to Dec. 31, 2010, giving him time to mentor his new replacement -- Zach Taylor.
Joe and I realized that Zack Taylor had all the basic qualities to take over the presidency of this company, says Nelson. Taylor earned a bachelor's degree in business from Concord University and a law degree from West Virginia University. He had joined Logan as an outside salesman in 2003 and rapidly progressed through the ranks, becoming a regional sales manager for West Virginia in 2007, general manager of distribution and manufacturing in 2008 and executive vice president in 2009.
Since Nelson's return to Logan Corp., he and Taylor have worked closely together. I'm really proud of what Zach's accomplished, and I believe he is ready to assume this added responsibility as of Jan. 1, says Nelson, primarily because of the quality and the intelligence of this young man.
When Nelson joined Logan in February 1983 as general manager, it was operating from five branches situated in West Virginia and western Virginia to serve the underground mining market. In 1986, he and others participated in the company's acquisition of a Sullair factory store, which distributed a high-quality line of air compressors in Charleston, W.V. It became a wholly owned subsidiary of Logan Corp., operating as Valley Air Inc. It was a very good acquisition for us, and we continued to operate that as Valley Air until it was merged into Logan in 2008.
In 1989, negotiations were finalized with General Electric, appointing Logan Corp. a distributor for genuine GE locomotive renewal parts. The relationship continues today, with the Logan locomotive parts group operating in the company's Huntington location.
In 1993, Logan shifted toward surface mining and manufacturing with its acquisition of Kanawha Steel & Equipment Co., headquartered in Charleston, and Nelson became president. Part of the Kanawha deal was a distributorship for ESCO, manufacturer of premier ground-engaging tools. In 1995, Kanawha was merged with Logan.
To this day, Logan remains one of the world's largest ESCO dealers. ESCO is by far our core product line, highly respected in the surface mining industry.
Nelson Wields his Business Acuity
Nelson was elected to serve as Logan Corp.'s president and chief operating officer in 1999, when Joe England became chairman and chief executive officer.
His career began in 1959 as a machine shop expediter for Lakeshore Inc., a manufacturer of marine and mining products, and a machinery distributor, located in the Iron Mountain, Michigan region. Throughout the next 11 years, he advanced to inside sales and then assistant general manager of the trackless mining division. Therein was my introduction to the mining industry, he says.
In 1971, Nelson accepted a job as vice president of Frank Kersey Corp., a mining equipment company in Bluefield, Va. In 1973, he joined Sien Equipment Co. of Carlsbad, N.M., as eastern United States vice president, selling rubber-tired, diesel-powered underground mining machinery.
In 1973, Sien Equipment was sold to Elmac, a company based in Huntington. The following year, Elmac was acquired by Eagle Pitcher Industries, a large conglomerate based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Nelson was charged with running Sien's New Mexico operation from Columbus, Ohio, and then from Huntington, after relocating there in 1975.
In 1982, Eagle Pitcher officials approached Nelson for help selling Sien. That year, he arranged the sale to Ingersoll Rand, which would have resulted in relocation to Abingdon, Va., if he stayed onboard.
All these acquisitions and relocating are hard on the family, as you can imagine, says Nelson. It was in the best interest of everyone, including myself, to stay in Huntington. We love West Virginia.
Instead, Nelson accepted an offer to join Logan Corp. as the general manager. It was a great fit for me.
