Rocks By Rail
A visit to the Living Ironstone Museum in Cottesmore, Rutland, known as Rocks by Rail. Brake van rides were pulled by 1940 built Andrew Barclay N0 2088 Sir Thomas Royden. There was also movement by Rolls Royce Sentinel Betty built in 1964.
The museum houses an extensive collection of both steam and diesel engines as well as wagons.
Shunting In The Quarry At Rocks By Rail
Shunting moves in the quarry section at Rocks By Rail - The Living Ironstone Museum are seen before a wagon exchange takes place.
The video begins with Rolls Royce Sentinel JEAN shunting iron ore tipplers between the two quarry roads. Later, Andrew Barclay 2088 SIR THOMAS ROYDEN brings five hoppers and a brake van up the 1:60 gradient. The 'full' tippler and 'empty' hoppers are then exchanged.
This video was filmed in January 2015, on the first occasion of the use of the new quarry spur.

Rocks by Rail 2015
This video shows industrial steam locomotives at work at the Rocks by Rail museum of the ironstone industry, in Rutland UK. The event was a steam photographic charter.
The museum is an open-air site dedicated to recreating an ironstone tramway system in its entirety from the extraction of iron ore from a 'first cut' quarry face reproduced in the quarry viewing area, to the exchange sidings with the BR rail head. The site is based on a typical 1950s or early 1960s quarry system when both steam and diesel power was evident in the industry. The branch line linked to the Melton Mowbray to Oakham main line at Ashwell Station. Exchange sidings were once located at the museum serving three separate private quarry railway systems associated with the extraction of iron ore. The museum site was known locally as Cottesmore Iron Ore Mines Sidings.
The museum aims to collect and operate industrial locomotives and mineral wagons from iron ore quarries. They also have a face shovel, a drag line excavator and dumpers as used in quarry systems. The cab of the massive dragline excavator Sundew is on display here.
The museum operates passenger rides on a 0.75 miles (1.21 km) length of track and occupies an area of nearly 9 acres (28,000 m²).
STEAM TRAIN RIDE AT ROCKS BY RAIL
Thank you for looking at my video located at Rocks by Rail in Lincolnshire. (England)
Please bare in mind I recorded the footage on a phone and on a Gopro Fusion which failed horribly for me as you will see, So there is a fare bit of movement and bouncing around which is to be expected.
This was the first time I had been on a Steam train and although the trip was short it was very sweet and you have to take a ride on one to experience the thrill they are.
I am very grateful to 'Rocks by Rail' for allowing the public to get up so close and be quite free to see the works in action as you can see.
As I stated every penny this video generates will be donated to the museum to support what they are so dedicated in doing and keeping our heritage alive.
In 2020 I will be buying a new camera and a Gimbal to prevent issues like I had in this footage.
Thank you.
Rocks by Rail October 2013
Rocks by Rail is located nr Cottesmore , Rutland .
Steams every third Sunday and I went along for the first time in 4 yrs , What a change is taking place --4yrs ago it was the Ru(s)tland Railway ---not now --It is well into rebranding as an Ironstone Quarrying heritage site with the intention of showing all aspects of the ironstone industry that employed many people through the East Midlands from Grantham through Rutland into Northamptonshire.
So there is not just railway machinery but a dragline, faceshovel and large dumptruck . Demos are given of the craneage and shunting around a small quarry area.
Check their website rocks-by-rail.org for more details
I went just for an hour and spent most of the day there. Good access all around site and lots of opportunity for pics . Had several brakevan rides .
There was only one steam lococmotive in action and then a diesel for shunting later in day .
A steam gala takes place on November 17 with 3 steam engines ---double heading ,brakevan trips freight train, shunting and I hope some quarrying action.

Rocks by Rail 2013 Autumn Gala
This was the first Gala under the Rocks by Rail banner since undergoing metamorphosis from the Rutland Railway Museum. In steam were two Andrew Barclay tanks from the Home fleet. Guest engine at the Gala came from the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway in the form of the Peckett tank Fulstow. Each engine rotated throughout the day changing at two hourly intervals to perform a number of roles.

Rocks by Rail
Pictures from Rocks by Rail, formerly Rutland Railway Museum. The museum aims to show an East Midlands ironstone quarry railway set up. Sadly the steam engine scheduled for the day, 1940 Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST No.2088 Sir Thomas Royden, had failed while being light up, so cab rides on 1967 Thomas Hill 4wDH No.186V Mr D were being offered instead.

Cottesmore Industrial Railway Centre (Rocks by Rail)
A visit to the Cottesmore Industrial railway Centre coincided with both current locos being in steam and one under going a boiler test. In preparation for an open weekend a bit of shunting was necessary and this is a short film i made of the resulting manouvers.
Rocks By Rail (Rutland Railway Museum) 21/07/13
still photos of rocks by rail, formerly known as the rutland railway museum,. following the pictures are a few short video clips at the end of the diggers and general scene of wagons / stored locomotives. no trains were operating this day unfortunately (due to fire risk following very hot weather no steam was permitted, and the diesels had broken down!), some mechanical diggers were operating.
