Colorado - Estes Park & the Rocky Mountains
We made a trip to Estes Park, Colorado for Labor Day weekend and had the most amazing time there. We were there for 4 days and made sure we saw every sunrise and sunset. We even stayed up a little later in the night for some stargazing and it was the most incredible view we’ve ever experienced!

A winter's drive through Gateway, Colorado on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains
Although a bit wasteful and polluting, I've always enjoyed a good road trip. Luckily many of my trips have served some kind of business purpose other than just idle cruising around the countryside.
In this case I was on business along Colorado's western slope as I made a number of stops in small towns on state highways 141 and 145. The town of Gateway is about 450 kilometres (280 miles) west of Denver and offers access through some great winding and twisting canyon country.

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) Trail Ridge Road - Alpine Visitor Center - Day 4 of 5
Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) Trail Ridge Road - Alpine Visitor Center - Day 4 of 5. Recorded on May 31st 2018. This video shows the The Trail Ridge Road leading up to the Alpine Visitor Center. We share some of the educational displays in the Visitor center. The Alpine Visitor Center is at elevation of 11,796 feet. Also shared some of the Trail Ridge Road Medicine Bow Curve leaving the Alpine Visitor Center.
“Rocky Mountain National Park's Alpine Visitor Center is located at 11,796 feet (3,595 m) above sea level at Fall River Pass, one mile west of the highest point on Trail Ridge Road and four miles east of the Continental Divide at Milner Pass in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is the highest visitor center in the National Park System.[1]
The Alpine Visitor Center includes restrooms, exhibits on the alpine tundra ecosystem, and a gift shop operated by the park's non-profit partner organization, the Rocky Mountain Conservancy. The visitor center opens around Memorial Day and closes around mid-October due to snow and the extreme winter environment. In mid-summer, the visitor center is also usually accessible by Old Fall River Road, a 9-mile dirt road open to one-way, uphill vehicle traffic.
Views from the Alpine Visitor Center include the Mummy Range, the Fall River Valley, and Trail Ridge to the east and the Never Summer and Medicine Bow ranges to the west and north. Hiking opportunities include the 1/4-mile round-trip Alpine Ridge Trail, commonly referred to as Huffer's Hill, and the 8-mile round-trip Ute Trail to Milner Pass. Park Rangers provide park orientation and interpretive programs on the alpine tundra.
Additional gift and food services at Fall River Pass are provided at the concession-operated Trail Ridge Store and Cafe.“

Greyrock Trail (Part 1) - In A Colorado Minute (Week 272)
- - The Greyrock Trail (off Poudre Canyon Road aka Highway 14) is a slightly challenging and very rewarding hiking trail up to Greyrock Mountain in the Laramie Mountain Range of the Rocky Mountains.
To cover the 2,040 feet of elevation to the 7,600-feet summit of Greyrock Mountain, you can choose between two trails: Greyrock Meadows Trail (3.79 miles total) and Greyrock Summit Trail (2.8 miles total). Greyrock Trail is the steeper and more interesting trail that I took while shooting this video.
Both trails meet again at the base of Greyrock, after which the remaining 1/2 mile is a more rocky terrain that may require your hands to help you get up to the summit, discover the small lake at the top and enjoy the view of snow-covered peaks of the Rocky Mountains and the High Plains.
The day I hiked Greyrock Trail was appropriately grey with a constant threat of thunderstorms. Everyone who had passed me while I was stopping to shoot my video along the way, eventually passed me again as they descended, including the two very kind Park Rangers. So when Whiskey and I had made it onto Greyrock itself and I believed to be only about 10 or 15 minutes from the summit, the rain, sudden big wind gusts, and thunder above, convinced me to turn back around and try to get us to a safer spot quickly. I decided I would just come back on another, clearer day to explore and record the summit and the view.
But at least I still got to enjoy some of the bird's-eye views of Laporte, Fort Collins and part of Horsetooth Reservoir (as you can see in the end of the video).
In the video, you will see my dog Whiskey cooling off in the stream that runs along a good portion of the Summit Trail. However, it is advised to not let your dog drink that water due to possible presence of Giardia bacteria. Please bring your own source of water for your dog as I did. And hopefully your dog isn't as much of a nature snob that she insists on drinking the local mountain water.
Another thing I'd like to point out that may already be obvious from the video: these forests seem to catch fire easily because Colorado is usually rather dry. So please be very aware of not doing anything that might cause a fire.
Last but not least, I highly recommend hiking this very popular trail at this time of year because of all the wildflowers! Just get there early so you can claim one of the parking spots.
