Meymand Rocky village
A little Birthday surprise in Meymand :)
Meymand Rocky Village
The village of Meymand, which has been inscribed in the list of world heritage in 2015, is one of the most exceptional living complexes that has been formed according to the needs of human beings.
Meymand is in the central district of Shahr-e Babak county in Kerman Province, Iran. This village is one of the few ones which its rocky architecture is widely used in the whole structure of the village and One of the main differences of Meymand from other similar cases is that this village is still being used and people are living in those rocky and handmade houses. In other words, life is still going on in this ancient village with a history of going back to 12000 years. Meymand village is an outstanding achievement of the genius of human art in the distant past, in such a way that with minimum facilities made an amazing heritage. This village after many years remains relatively intact and had high resistance to heat and cold which is a result of being dug underground.
As mentioned above briefly, Meymand's architecture and structure is what makes it unique and remarkable. Meymand's houses weren’t built by laying stones and bricks together, but rather it's been shaped by the removal of a bunch of soil to make a shelter. That’s why there are many niches by removing masses of soil to make room for places to put blankets, pillows, dishes, boxes, lights and … These houses may include one or more rooms and stable which make a 'kicheh' in Meymand dialect that means alley. In Meymand there are 400 of those kitchens. This unit has a shared entrance and in the staircase, there might be stable on one side and a living room on the other side. Rooms in kicheh aren’t geometrically regular. For example, there is a 3*4 room with 1.90 to 2.10-meter height in most kichehs, biggest kicheh doesn’t exceed 90 square meters. Experts believe that smoke from cooking and burning firewood for heating results in isolation and prevents them from destruction.

Meymand , A 12000 years old cave village of Iran
Meymand Village is a 12,000 year old cave village located in Shahr’e Babak, Kerman, Iran. Meymand is one of the oldest continually inhabited places in Iran and in 2006 census, its population was 673, in 181 families. Some families are continuously living here around 3,000 years ago. The old houses of Meymand Village are carved like caverns inside the mountain. The internal spaces have corridors and pillars showing a rural architecture. The houses are situated in four or five stories, one on top of the other. There is a stove inside each house used for heating and cooking. The inward spaces are black because of smoke and soot. There is also an area of around 400 square meters in the Village containing 15 circular stone rooms. Bones and other belongings were discovered there, giving the impression that it was used to lay the bodies of the deceased.
The kinds of dwelling-place dug out of the mountains are not of a temporary nature but rather are permanent homes. The discovery of stone engravings, some as old as 10,000 years, around the Village in addition to 6,000 year old pottery reveal the long lived history of the Village. According to the locals, the ancients did not use a hammer and chisel, but rather a type of local, pointed stone which is hard enough to carve images onto the rocks. This method of carving is still practiced in the region today.
The inhabitants are semi-nomadic shepherds, some of whom own Village land that is occupied in winter, whereas in summer the population moves to higher pastures. The local language contains many words from the ancient Sassanid and Pahlavi languages, the language barely changing due to the isolation of the Village. The economy of the villagers is based on agriculture, animal husbandry and carpet weaving; but carpet weaving is more important to the extent that Meymand carpets enjoy international fame. Since carpet weaving is prevalent in the area, other related jobs such as dyeing, felt making, weaving of gilims and crochet working are common too.
There is a large inn inside Meymand Village which is used to host tourists. Meymand Village obtained the ‘Reward of Mercury’ as the seventh cultural, natural and historical scene of the world in September 2005. This reward is given by the Greek government, in collaboration with UNESCO, to the historical monuments that are unique from the viewpoint of culture, nature and history.

This feature is about the nature around the Meymand Village in Kerman Province (استان كرمان).
Today it's all about nature and what it brings us. It's wonderful what you can find in some less explored places. Kerman's stunning red fields left us gobsmacked, at first I didn't know what they were but when I went closer the only thing I could think of was Rhubarb Crumble!
Wherever we went there were medicinal herbs or delicious herbs you could just brew and drink and God knows how good they are for us.
When tourists come to Kerman, Meymand is one of those places they always stay for a night or two.

Iran - Kandovan Rock dwellings
Kandovan is full of manmade cliff dwellings which are still inhabited. The homes, excavated inside volcanic rocks are similar to dwellings in Capadocia.

Meymand ميمند is a village in Meymand Rural District, in the Central District of Shahr-e Babak County, Kerman Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 673, in 181 families.
Meymand is a very ancient village which is located near Shahr-e Babak city in Kerman Province, Iran. Meymand is believed to be a primary human residence in the Iranian Plateau, dating back to 12,000 years ago. Many of the residents live in the 350 hand-dug houses amid the rocks, some of which have been inhabited for as long as 3,000 years.
Stone engravings nearly 10,000 years old are found around the village, and deposits of pottery nearly 6,000 years old attest to the long history of settlement at the village site.
Regarding the origin of these structures two theories have been suggested:
According to the first theory, this village was built by a group of the Aryan tribe about 800 to 700 years B.C. and at the same time with the Median era. It is possible that the cliff structures of Meymand were built for religious purposes.
Worshippers of Mithras believe that the sun is invincible and this guided them to consider mountains as sacred. Hence the stone cutters and architects of Meymand have set their beliefs out in the construction of their dwellings. Based on the second theory the village dates back to the second or third century A.D. During the Arsacid era different tribes of southern Kerman migrated in different directions.
These tribes found suitable places for living and settled in those areas by building their shelters which developed in time into the existing homes. The existence of a place known as the fortress of Meymand, near the village, in which more than 150 ossuaries (bone-receptacle) of the Sassanid period were found, strengthens this theory.
Living conditions in Meymand are harsh due to the aridity of the land and to high temperatures in summers and very cold winters. The local language contains many words from the ancient Sassanid and Pahlavi languages زبان پهلوي و ساساني.
In 2005, Meymand was awarded the UNESCO-Greece Melina Mercouri International Prize for the Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes (about $20,000).
On 4 July 2015, the village was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
