Rodina-Mat (Родина-мать) Mother Motherland Kiev, Ukraine
Rodina-Mat is a World War II monument standing 102 meters tall (335 ft) in Kiev, Ukraine. It was completed in 1981 and was designed by Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich who also designed two other well-known war memorials The Motherland Calls in Volgograd, Russia and the Soviet soldier carrying a German infant in Berlin. Beneath the monument is the World War II museum, one of the most impressive I have been to in Europe and well worth taking the time to check out.

However the statue is so high and it can be seen from many different areas in Kiev. There is a worthy will for millions of people of Ukraine who are proud of them. This gives Kiev city a different identity. The Rodina Mat is really impressive. It is placed on the hill, so it is one of the places from which you can see the city from a height. And it is good to have a picnic or just lay there on the grass in the sunshine season. You can just walk around the grounds.

The stainless steel statue stands 62 m (203 ft) tall upon the museum main building with the overall structure measuring 102 m (335 ft) including its base and weighing 560 tons. The sword in the statue's right hand is 16 m (52 ft) long weighing 9 tons, with the left hand holding up a 13 by 8 m (43 by 26 ft) shield with the State Emblem of the Soviet Union. Initially the image of the statue was drawn by Vutchetich from Ukrainian painter Nina Danyleiko, after the design was taken over by Borodai from another Ukrainian sculptor Halyna Kalchenko, a daughter of the Prime Minister of Ukraine Nikifor Kalchenko.
The memorial hall of the Museum displays marble plaques with carved names of more than 11,600 soldiers and over 200 workers of the home-front honored during the war with the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union and the Hero of Socialist Labor. On the hill beneath the museum, traditional flower shows are held.

The Motherland Calls (Russian: Родина-мать зовёт! Rodina-Mat' zovyot!), also called Homeland-Mother, Homeland-Mother Is Calling, simply The Motherland, or The Mamayev Monument, is a statue in Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, Russia, commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad. It was designed by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and structural engineer Nikolai Nikitin, and declared the largest statue in the world in 1967. Today, it is the tallest statue of a woman in the world, not including pedestals.
Compared with the later higher statues, The Motherland Calls is significantly more complex from an engineering point of view, due to its characteristic posture with a sword raised high in the right hand and the left hand extended in a calling gesture. The technology behind the hollow statue is based on a combination of prestressed concrete with wire ropes structure, a solution which can be found also in another work of Nikitin's, the super-tall Ostankino Tower in Moscow.
When the memorial was dedicated in 1967 it was the tallest sculpture in the world, measuring 85 metres (279 ft) from the tip of its sword to the top of the plinth. The figure itself measures 52 metres (171 ft), and the sword 33 metres (108 ft). Two hundred steps, symbolizing the 200 days of the Battle of Stalingrad, lead from the bottom of the hill to the monument. The lead sculptor was Yevgeny Vuchetich, and Nikolai Nikitin handled the significant structural engineering challenges of the 7,900 tonnes (7,800 long tons; 8,700 short tons) concrete sculpture. The statue appears on both the current flag and coat of arms of Volgograd Oblast.
Marshal of the Soviet Union Vasily Ivanovich Chuikov is buried in the area of the monument, as is famous Soviet sniper Vasily Zaytsev, who killed 225 Axis soldiers in the battle of Stalingrad.

Rodina Mat and WWII Soviet Memorial - Kiev, Ukraine
A visit to the Motherland Monument (Rodina Mat) تمثال ومتحف الوطن الأم في اوكرانيا
A visit to the Motherland Monument (Rodina Mat). A remnant of the Soviet era. You can see Communists' fingerprints everywhere here in Kyif and the Ukraine. Within this complex is also the Ukraine Museum of the Second World War.
The Motherland is Calling....A Russian WWII Memorial
The 'Motherland Calls' (Russian: Родина-мать зовёт! Rodina-Mat' zovyot!), is also called 'Mother Motherland', 'Mother Motherland Is Calling', 'The Motherland', or 'The Mamayev Monument'. It is a statue in Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, (formerly Stalingrad) Russia, and commemorates the Battle of Stalingrad.
The figure itself measures 52 metres (170 feet) tall, with the sword being 33 metres (108 feet). Two hundred steps, symbolizing the 200 days of the Battle of Stalingrad, (from July 17, 1942, through February 2, 1943) lead from the bottom of the hill to the monument.
We're talking BIG statuary! The slide show identifies specific statues' heights.
Mother Russia is located at the top of Mamayev Kurgan, where she is the main monument of a memorial complex to those Soviets who fell in World War II. She represents the Motherland, or Russia. The statue appears on both the current flag and coat of arms of Volgograd Oblast.
Made from concrete and steel, it took 3 years for the statue to be completed. She was officially dedicated on Oct. 15, 1967.
The lead sculptor was Yevgeny Vuchetich. The significant structural engineering challenges of the 7,900 tons (7,800 long tons; 8,700 short tons) of the concrete sculpture were handled by Nikolai Nikitin.
The Hall of Military Glory is a round building at the foot of the Mamayev Kurgan Memorial complex and contains an eternal flame, with walls of names of the dead. It is guarded by a soldier who stands at attention. The changing of the Guard occurs every hour and is quite a spectacle that involves high goose stepping Honor Guards. The total square footage of the memorial complex is sixty-five thousand square meters.
As I understand it, a visitor enters the complex past the 'Singing Walls' then enters the Hall of Honor. From there walks the 'Square of Grief' and then along the Reflection pool via 'Lenin Avenue' On the right side of the Avenue are the huge sculptures of 'Heroes of the Battle'. From there, one passes a smaller pool and the sculpture of 'Fight to the Death'. Then the climbing of the 200 steps which are at least partially lined with wall scenes of the Battle and finally arrives at the Mamayev Kurgan...Motherland Calls.
In May 2009 it was reported that rising water levels had caused the monument's foundations to sink and that the statue is leaning to such a degree that it is feared it will fall over. The leaning is rapidly getting worse. The statue is not fixed to its foundations and is held in place only by its weight. It has moved about 8 inches and is not expected to be able to move much farther without collapsing. While local authorities deny that the statue is in danger, conservation and restoration works started in 2010.
This has been an exceptionally difficult topic to research. While pictures are plentiful, descriptions in English are not. Many of the articles I found were in Russian or had been translated by someone who was not fluent in English. In addition, I found almost every statue, every memorial, every building and walkway had several names which made it difficult to keep track of exactly what was where, etc.
Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy this slide show. Please be sure to check my other shows and tell your friends about my NiNaWavs2U channel on Youtube.
I do not hold a copyright on either the pictures or the music used in this slide show.
Be well!
