Flying to Rodrigues Island
Rodrigues is a delightful remote little holiday island 650 km east of Mauritius in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Measuring only 18 km in length and 8 km at its widest point Rodrigues is entirely surrounded by coral reefs offering world-class diving and snorkeling.
Rodrigues Island has been named after the Portuguese explorer Diego Rodrigues. It forms part of the Mascarene Islands and is the smallest of the three islands. It is part of the Republic of Mauritius.
Rodrigues is captivating with amazing scenic route and panoramic views. The people are very friendly and always smiling. I call this the island with no stress.
It is blessed with a very dense tropical vegetation.
Rodrigues is 90mins flight from Mauritius. Jump in with Moris Trotter to have a sneak peek of this island.

Résumé d'une semaine sur Rodrigues
Trip to Rodrigues Island
A trip in 2017 to Rodrigues Island turned out to be an amazing and wonderful adventure of a lifetime.
Rodrigues (French: Île Rodrigues) is an autonomous outer island of the Republic of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, about 560 kilometers (350 mi) east of Mauritius. It is part of the Mascarene Islands which include Mauritius and Reunion. It is of volcanic origin and is surrounded by coral reef, and just off its coast lie some tiny inhabited islands. The island is considered to be the tenth District of Mauritius. The capital of the island is Port Mathurin.
People of Rodrigues are very friendly and always ready to help, so be nice to them. I stayed at the place of one Mr Mordon as I call him. He is a humble, friendly and popular man around the Island at Baie-Aux-Huites, a beautiful place near Port-Mathurin with families and friends. During my stay I ate lots of traditional cuisines and most of the time seafoods which are available almost around the Island. I travelled almost everywhere around the Island and I was overwhelmed by its beauty and panoramic views. I would recommend anyone to visit the Island once in their lifetime.
Waving goodbye was the hardest part of the adventure. As I was stepping inside the airplane slowly there was the feeling as if I was leaving something behind. I was like feeling I belong to the Island for the very few days I spent. I just turned around to look behind a last time and said to myself that I'm gonna be back someday in Rodrigues with someone especial. Thank you Rodrigues.

Mauritius Rodrigues Island turtles
There are on this island such a multitude of those tortoises in groups of two or three thousand that you can make more than one hundred strides [] on their shells without your feet treading the ground. Francois Leguat (1693): Over the next century (1732-1771) the French East India Company, which had control over Rodrigues, removed not less than 280,000 tortoises. The last record of a wild Rodrigues Island tortoise was noted by Philibert Maragon in 1794, and the last captive specimen died in Mauritius in 1829. Such was the rapid decline to extinction of two sympatric, endemic species of Indian Ocean tortoises: Cylindraspis vosmeari and Cylindrapis peltastes. In response to this sad story of loss to both science and humanity, Owen Griffiths, a trained zoologist and committed environmentalist, has initiated an ambitious project aiming at giving back to Rodrigues its past natural heritage the reintroduction of giant tortoises into a reforested nature reserve on the island. In February 2005, the new autonomous local government of Rodrigues approved the lease of initial18 hectares for the establishment of the Francois Leguat Tortoise Reserve on the limestone plains of the Islands southwest. Subsequently, 80,000 endemic and native Rodrigues plants (representing 34 species) have been re-established on the site, and 35,000 more will be planted in 2007, under the supervision of the Rodrigues branch of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation. The objective is to reestablish the original lowland savannah forest ecosystem described by Francois Leguat in the 17th Century. In September 2006, the Tortoise Reserves administrative buildings were completed, comprising an administrative block, tortoise nursery and managers lodge. In October 2006, a total of 294 Aldabra giant tortoises (Dipsochelys dussimeri =Geochelone gigantea) were introduced at the site as ecological proxies for the extinct Cylindraspis vosmeari. The contingent of tortoises is composed of 288 juveniles, now being reared in a specially designed tortoise nursery, and a further 6 adult tortoises roaming in the restored savanna ecosystem. In 2007 an additional 50 adult tortoises and 150 juveniles will be introduced on the site, along with a small group of Madagascar radiated tortoises (Geochelone=Astrochelys radiata), which are intended to provide an analog to the smaller of the two extinct endemic forms (Cylindrapis peltastes). It is hoped that within ten-years 1000 tortoises will roam and graze on the site for the pleasure of visitors and in support of public environmental education. The giant tortoises released on Rodrigues all derive from a tortoise breeding project initiated by Owen Griffiths on Mauritius some twenty years ago at his La Vanille Reserve des Mascareignes. This breeding group comprises direct descendents of Darwin Tortoises. In the 1880s, to ensure that the Aldabra tortoises did not suffer the same fate as the endemic tortoises of Mauritius, Reunion and Rodrigues, Charles Darwin and a group of influential scientists successfully petitioned for the translocation of some Aldabra tortoises to Mauritius. This task was accomplished under the direction of then Governor of Mauritius, Sir Arthur Hamilton Gordon. In addition to its eroded, basaltic uplands, Rodrigues has over 2000 hectares of limestone plains, which badly need native ecosystem restoration and protection. In addition, the limestone area contains an abundance of caves and sinkholes that have preserved fossils and sub-fossils of many of the islands extinct biological treasures. It is anticipated that the Francois Leguat Tortoise Reserve will serve as a model for further native ecosystem restoration on Rodrigues.
Rodrigues Island Mauritius -Was it Worth the Rough Seas on a Sailboat? -Patrick Childress Sailing#19
Indian Ocean Anchorage: Rodrigues Island Mauritius! Our Indian ocean crossing on our sailboat “Brick House” , to Rodrigues Island, was a rough passage, but then we arrive at a gem! Crossing the Indian Ocean, Isolated in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the remoteness protects this island that belongs to Mauritius, yet is so different. Rodriguez Dancing, Rodrigues food...everything..it’s all different here. And Sailboats can tie up to the wharf free of charge and fix a sailboat. Patrick Childress feels this is one of the most yacht friendly islands in the world. Black Marlin Fishing offers great deep sea fishing trips, and exploring the island by motor scooter is fantastic since there are smooth roads, and little traffic. Introduction:
----------------------
I visited Rodrigues in June 2018 while sailing as a crew member on SV Island Pearl II, an Amel 53 ft yacht from Australia currently on a multi-year world circumnavigation.
I was fortunate to have spent one year on this beautiful yacht sailing from Thailand to Grenada in the Caribbean via the Indian Ocean, South Africa, and the Atlantic (Jan 2018-Jan 2019, covering some 13,400 nautical miles).
Looking back, Rodrigues was one of our trip highlights, and certainly qualifies as a real ‘Jewel’ and a great ‘get away from it all’ sanctuary.
Here, one can get close to nature, spend time hiking the hills, or just sit back, relax, and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of this Island and her people.
The locals which we met were absolutely delightful, friendly, warm and genuinely helpful - interested in meeting and assisting the very few yachts that venture each year all this way into the Southern Indian Ocean to visit this island.
It is highly recommended as a stop-over for those yachts sailing across the Indian Ocean, although one can also fly from Mauritius to visit this island as well.
Previously posted on this channel are 2 other videos on the stunning Maldives Islands which we also visited during the past year as well (Shot with the Fuji X-T20 in 1080p resolution).
Note: These videos will also appear on another Youtube Channel (Sailing Island Pearl) which is hosted by the Skipper of the yacht I sailed on.
