The West Somerset Railway - Spring Steam Gala - 29/04/17
The last weekend of April saw the West Somerset Railway holding their annual Spring Steam Gala, between Thursday 27th and Sunday 30th. As well as the home fleet, the event would see a good variety of visiting locomotives from heritage lines all over England and Wales, such as 4F no.43924, making a rare appearance away from her base at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway; and Standard 4MT no.76017 from the Mid Hants Railway, brought in as a last minute stand in for 7F no.53809, who was undergoing maintenance which may not have been completed in time for the gala. Happily, however, the work was completed in time, and she worked on a selection of runs as an additional loco, while 76017 worked the services originally booked for her.

West Somerset Railway 'SPRING STEAM GALA' - 2017
Due to essential maintenance around Seaward Way Crossing, the West Somerset Railway's 2017 'SPRING STEAM GALA' was moved from March to the end of April (27th-30th).
This year's gala had no official theme but it centred heavily on British Railways Black as all but one of the main working locomotives carried a variant of that livery.
The locomotives in action were...
- BR(W) 1500-class 0-6-0PT No.1501 (visiting from the Severn Valley Railway)
- GWR 5101-class 'Large Prairie' 2-6-2T No.5199 (on-loan from the Llangollen Railway until June)
- GWR 6959-class 'Modified Hall' 4-6-0 No.6960 Raveningham Hall
- LMSR 4F-class 0-6-0 No.43924 (visiting from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway)
- LMSR 4F-class 0-6-0 No.44422
- SDJR 7F-class 2-8-0 No.53808
- SDJR 7F-class 2-8-0 No.53809*
- BR 'Standard 4'-class 2-6-0 No.76017 (visiting from the Mid-Hants Railway)*
- BR 'Standard 2'-class 2-6-0 No.78018 (visiting from the Great Central Railway)
- 'Andrew-Barclay' 0-4-0ST W/No.1219 Caledonia Works (giving shunting demonstrations at Washford)
- 'Peckett' R3-class 0-4-0ST W/No.1788 Kilmersdon (giving rides at Minehead)
* = There was some doubt whether 53809 would be ready to participate in the gala so 76017 was brought in to cover for its turns. As it turned out, 53809 became ready on the Friday and worked selected trains and even deputised for the failed 44422 on the Sunday.
