#984 Road Trip - Rogers Pass 2018-05-22
In our various travels, I use a dashcam in the vehicle. It started using my Sony CX110 and then went through various iterations of dedicated cameras to the current Viofo A119.
I've posted a few of these Road Trip videos in the past and our recent trip through the mountains of British Columbia made a couple more seem inevitable.
This is just the camera footage, as taken, but sped up by a factor of ten. Every hour of trip shows as six minutes on screen.

Cheops North Bowl
When we first arrived in Rogers Pass, we found a stable snow pack opening some higher alpine routes. Reaching Cheops North Bowl had a spooky feeling, one of the more emotional lines experienced. I felt the mountains presence the rest of the week. Cheops has a history of shedding its cornices into the valley below. Luckily we scored a stable day but these upper cornices is what pushed us out of the area after the next storm came. Know when to go, and when not to. Got a real BIG Thank You to the guys at Rogers Pass Discovery Center! This video is just one run.
Visiting CAMPBELL RIVER, BC + Hiking in ELK FALLS | Vancouver Island, British Columbia
Come join us for another exciting travel day on Vancouver Island as we head north to Campbell River, BC to enjoy visiting the town before going hiking at Elk Falls.
After our stop at Miracle Beach, we hopped back in the car and continued our drive up to Campbell River, British Columbia. After a week of spotting black bears left, right and centre, we had a funny little incident where we thought a dog was one.
Once we got into town, we checked out some of the murals and browsed through antiques at the Trading Post, before heading down to the pier.
The Discovery Pier is Canada’s first saltwater fishing pier, so it’s a little piece of history. It looks out over the Discovery Passage and it’s a popular fishing spot. The pier stretches out 600 ft and is equipped with rod holders, bait stands, and fish cleaning tables. You can even rent fishing rods if you’re there between May and October.
That afternoon we continued to the Quinsam River Hatchery, because, have I already mentioned that Campbell River is the Salmon Capital of the World?! The hatchery has a visitor center with information about the hatchery program and the salmon life cycle, but really, I think most of us were there for a chance to spot a black bear fishing.
You can see pink adults in September, and chinook and coho adults in October and November. It’s open to visitors seven days a week from 8:00am to 3:30pm, and well worth the visit if you’re already in the area. From there, it was onwards to nearby Elk Falls.
One of the main draws to Elk Falls is the 25-metre waterfall that gives the park its name. There is a suspension bridge for those willing to brave the heights, as well as viewing decks.
And that’s pretty much a wrap for our day exploring Campbell River, BC and the surrounding area.
A special thanks to TROVER for making this trip possible.

Visiting CAMPBELL RIVER, BC + Hiking in ELK FALLS | Vancouver Island, British Columbia:
Come join us for an epic road trip to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada where partner with Trover to cover the island from the south all the way up to the north. Unlike most Vancouver Island road trips and travel series which focus on the triangle of Vancouver, Nanaimo and Tofino, we branch off and visit lesser-known places such as Gold River, Port Alice and Malcolm Island just to name a few.
Our trip to Vancouver Island starts off with a flight from Toronto to Vancouver, followed by the shortest flight of our lives from Vancouver to Victoria. From Victoria, we head to our base of Mount Washington in the central part of the island, where highlights include spotting black bears, hiking in Mount Washington and visiting vineyards in Comox.
Our journey then continues to Gold River, Sam's hometown, where we board the Uchuck III en route to Friendly Cove. We also go to nearby Campbell River where we walk along a beautiful fishing dock, tour a hatchery and come across a black bear, and hike in Elk Falls which was our favourite hike on this entire journey.
Heading to northern Vancouver Island, we base ourselves in Port Alice and visit the nearby towns of Port McNeill, Port Hardy and Telegraph Cove. For separate day trips, we take the ferry to Malcolm Island where we visit the former Finnish Community of Sointula and take another ferry to Alert Bay where we have the opportunity to appreciate First Nations totem poles, artwork and museums.
Our Vancouver Island road trip concludes with visits to Parksville, Nanaimo and Victoria. Overall, it was one of the best road trips we've ever done focusing mostly on nature, outdoor adventure, wildlife spotting and visiting off-the-beaten-path villages and communities that have a lot to offer but aren't that well known.
If you are thinking of doing a Canada road trip, Vancouver Island should be at the top of your list. For more information and tips on all the places we visited on Vancouver Island, you can check out this Trover list:

GOODBYE DEATH VALLEY / WM. MANLEY AND JM.ROGERS PASS
Wm. Manley and Jm. Rogers are known for one of historys greatest acts of heroism. Their wagon trains were lost in Death Valley in 1850 America. They walked through the Great Mojave desert for 250 miles to southren California to get food and supplies for the starving Bennett and Arcane families. Then after buying three burrows and food, returned the same 250 miles to save the stranded starving families. Everyone survived. There's many mysteries as to what route they took. After climbing to the Roger's Pass marker, then climbing up to Manley lookout, i'm convinced that they must have taken Pleasent Canyon. It's a no brainer. The accepted route is through Butte Valley to Redlands canyon. However there is a 100 ft. vertical drop at the western most point of that canyon. Women and children would have had a very hard time with that obsticale. I tried to represent all possible route's here. They could have taken Middle Park Canyon, South Park Canyon, or Pleasent Canyon as stated. Even Mengel Pass is a possability. However they did it, these are two of the bravest men who ever lived. I salute them, with Rolling Rock!

SUMMARY
=======
Glacier National Park is one of seven national parks in British Columbia, and is part of a system of 43 parks and park reserves across Canada. Established in 1886, the park encompasses 1,349 km2 (521 sq mi), and includes a portion of the Columbia Mountains. It also contains the Rogers Pass National Historic Site.
The park's history is closely tied to two primary Canadian transportation routes, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), completed in 1885, and the Trans-Canada Highway, completed in 1963. The pass in the centre of the park eluded explorers until 1881. The railway brought with it tourism, the establishment of Glacier National Park and the construction of a popular alpine hotel. The heavy winter snows and steep, avalanche-prone valleys of the park have been a major obstacle to transportation, necessitating much railway engineering and avalanche control measures.
The park contains high peaks, large, active glaciers, and one of Canada's largest cave systems. Its dense forests support populations of large mammals, birds, and alpine species. The region is noted for its heavy snowfall. The park has an extensive network of trails, three campgrounds, and four backcountry huts and cabins. Due to the major transportation routes that bisect it, Glacier National Park sees large numbers of visitors.
Rotary Snow Plow
A rotary snow plow is a piece of railroad snow fighting equipment. It is characterized by the large circular set of blades on its front end that rotate as a unit to cut through the snow on the track ahead of it. The precursor to the rotary snowplow was the wedge snowplow.

SUMMARY
=======
The Pacific Northwest (PNW), sometimes referred to as Cascadia, is a geographic region in western North America bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and (loosely) by the Cascade Mountain Range on the east. Though no official boundary exists, the most common conception includes the Canadian province of British Columbia and the U.S. states of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Broader conceptions reach north into Southeast Alaska and Yukon, south into northern California, and east of the Continental Divide to include Western Montana and parts of Wyoming. Narrower conceptions may be limited to the northwestern US, or to the coastal areas west of the Cascade and Coast mountains. The variety of definitions can be attributed to partially overlapping commonalities of the region's history, culture, geography, society, and other factors.
The Northwest Coast is the coastal region of the Pacific Northwest, and the Northwest Plateau (also commonly known as the Interior in British Columbia and the Inland Empire in the United States) is the inland region. The term Pacific Northwest should not be confused with the Northwest Territory (also known as the Great Northwest, a historical term in the United States) or the Northwest Territories of Canada.
The region's largest metropolitan areas are Greater Seattle, Washington, with 3.8 million people; Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, with 2.5 million people; and Greater Portland, Oregon, with 2.4 million people.A key aspect of the Pacific Northwest is the US–Canada international border, which the United States and the United Kingdom established at a time when the region's inhabitants were composed mostly of indigenous peoples. The border—in two sections, along the 49th parallel south of British Columbia and the Alaska Panhandle west of northern British Columbia—has had a powerful effect on the region. According to Canadian historian Ken Coates, the border has not merely influenced the Pacific Northwest—rather, the region's history and character have been determined by the boundary.
