Rogue Creamery making its way into dairy busin
FORT VANNOY, Ore. (AP) -- Rogue Creamery in Central Point, which began specializing in blue cheese about 60 years ago, is shifting into the dairy business.
Rogue Creamery marketing director Francis Plowman says by next spring, the company hopes to have the dairy farm certified organic, which prohibits the use of synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation and genetic engineering.
The new Rogue Creamery dairy farm features a barn that is larger than a football field where cows enter through an automated gate and get milked by a machine. The 75-acre farm supports 130 cows and the company is planning for an additional 110 cows.
The herd includes Holstein, Brown Swiss and Jersey breeds.
The dairy is also attracting visitors by offering tours and samplings from its on-site store.

Oregon Cheese Festival breaks records, keeps g
CENTRAL POINT, Ore. -- The 11th Annual Oregon Cheese Festival proved again to be the single biggest fundraiser for the Oregon Cheese Guild. Rogue Creamery's Marketing and Merchandising director says almost 4,000 people attended Saturday -- that is 10 percent more cheese visitors from last year.
Francis Plowman says the City of Central Point is concerned how big the festival is getting.
The Rogue Creamery is looking to expand its facilities to the north and south of the building near the corner of Pine Street and Highway 99. Plowman says without the Cheese Fest it would be difficult to keep Oregon's Cheese Guild. The guild is a non-profit supporting 20 cheesemakers in the state, including the Creamery, Willamette, Tillamook and even small 3-person cheeseries. This year's festival had people sampling the Creamery's vanilla and chocolate ice cream. One they look over the feedback and perfect their recipe, Plowman says they will sell ice cream in the near future.

Jackson County Fair 2018
Mom and I went to the Jackson County fair on July 13, 2018 which is also my father's 70th birthday. He's living abroad now, but I'm grateful that I can still do the things that I have always enjoyed doing.
It was very hot outside. Summer arrived somewhat calmly this year. We didn't even experience any triple digit weather until literally just a few days ago. It's been 100+ degrees every day and that trend will continue for the rest of the month, unfortunately. I learned that it was 101 degrees today.
As soon as mom and I found a table we sat for a minute to discuss our plans for the day. We both were hungry and so we bought hamburgers from the carnival food court. I ordered a mushroom cheeseburger and she just had a plain hamburger. The cook accidentally dropped her patty on the ground while he was flipping it so he had to pull out a cooked patty from a storage bin located next to the grill.
At least my burger was cooked fresh and it was amazing! It was greasy and tender and just about the best burger I've ever eaten. I found an ear of roasted corn to pair it with. Roasted corn is somewhat dry which is a bummer. The corn I had at the 4th of July Parade in Eagle Point was so much better.
I suddenly remembered that I had a grilled cheese sandwich from the Rogue Creamery that I still needed to eat. I originally went to the cheese factory in Central Point to get some cheese curds. That's an annual tradition that I have indulged in for the past several years. Unfortunately a piece of equipment broke at the factory so the cheesemakers weren't able to produce any curds. Determined not to leave empty handed, I discovered that they make grilled cheese sandwiches out of some fancy cheese that I've never heard of before. I just had to buy one.
But by the time I ate the sandwich it was no longer hot. I have a feeling this sandwich was meant to be eaten right after the cheese is melted. It was still good. The cheese had a nutty, slightly tangy flavor not unlike Havarti. So there I was, with my grilled cheese sandwich, a hamburger and an ear of roasted corn. I was in Heaven.
Mom and I checked out the midway, and we visited some of the venues. There was a new attraction this year: camel rides! I'm trying to remember if I have ever seen a camel in person before. I think the camels probably didn't mind the heat too much. If anything they were probably upset that it wasn't 120 degrees.
The mascot for the Oregon State Beavers was at the fair. I tried to photograph him but he didn't seem to want to acknowledge me. He would turn around a lot and I had a hard time filming him. It dawned on me that I was wearing my Oregon Ducks hat. Perhaps that was why the Beaver was avoiding me? Its just as well if the Duck was here I probably would have stalked him for hours until I was ejected from the fairgrounds by the police.
Despite the terrible heat mom and I managed to enjoy ourselves. I bought a caramel apple that was really good. The caramel sauce wasn't too think nor was it too thin. The apple was tart which is a nice contrast from the rich sweet caramel. I also bought a bag of cotton candy and a large bag of caramel corn. Its safe to say that I went all out during my visit to the Jackson County Fair which is what you're supposed to do I think. Having said that, it is a rather costly endeavor and I don't know how parents can afford to bring their children here.
I witnessed some silliness that I wasn't able to film. While I was using the restroom a couple of teenage girls--or perhaps they were in their early twenties--entered the bathroom together which startled all of us guys who were holding our penises. They said that we lived in enlightened modern times and that the women's restroom had a line so they just barged into our sanctum sanctorum and took over.
Its illegal to film in bathrooms but I really wish I had my camera with me then. It was bizarre to piss next to a couple of cackling shrieking young women. But I proved to myself that while urinating with an erection is difficult its certainly not impossible.
Then, later on in the night as mom and I were relaxing under a tent and watching the blinking lights on the carnival rides another two women started yelling at each other and they almost got into a fight. I was able to film some of that but it was too dark to see clearly. Besides security was there in a heartbeat to deescalate the situation.
While I was enjoying myself at the fairgrounds I bumped into two of my coworkers from ARCO Daniel Robinson and JC Ashker (Joe). They're two of the most popular employees at ampm. Now they get to be immortalized on YouTube forever.
Mom and I enjoyed ourselves and I'm pretty sure I drank at least two gallons of water during my visit to the fair. I sweated most of it out and now that I'm back home I wish I could go back to the fair!

FDA not inspecting during shutdown
OREGON -- The government shutdown is affecting multiple federal agencies including the Food and Drug Administration. Some local businesses say they are always prepared for food inspections, even though the next one may not be until after the shutdown. One week into the shutdown and FDA food safety inspectors are furloughed. This means our food and the factories they come through are not being documented for problems by anyone other than themselves. It does not mean they are all unsafe with many businesses still keeping track of their food and keeping the inventory clean. Of course the inspections are unannounced, which is what you would want. What good would an inspection be if you knew they were coming? We always consider ourselves inspection-ready, as our plant manager says, Marketing Director of Rogue Creamery, Francis Plowman, said. All of our products are documented as they come in. Having the USDA here or not doesn't affect how we do what we do, Taylors Sausage owner, Terry Taylor, saidThe FDA inspections are random and can range anywhere from once a month to every few months or even six months between each one.Rogue Creamery in Central Point and Taylor's Sausage in Cave Junction say they follow the same procedures whether the FDA or USDA is there or not.All of our products are verified and documented by other people, Taylor said.We clean as we go and could take 6 to 8 hours. We keep the same disciplines throughout the cheese making process, Plowman said.It is still too early to tell when the shutdown will end.Food handlers say they'll continue to do their best to keep food safe and whenever an inspector arrives, they will be ready.
