Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol Nong Phok, Roi Et, Thailand ( 7 )
Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol. Nong Phok, Roi Et
The Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol or the Great, Victorious and Auspicious Pagoda is one of the largest Chedi's ( pagoda ) in Thailand. It is located on the grounds of the Wat Pha Namthip Thep Prasit Vararam, a temple complex in Roi Et province in rural North Eastern Thailand. This huge chedi is 101 metres long, 101 metres wide and 101 metres high and was built on a plot measuring 101 Rai, which is about 40 acres. The number 101 comes from the name of the province it is located in, Roi Et, which means 101 in Thai.
The Chedi, which is also known as Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkhon is highly revered in Roi Et province, since relics of the Buddha are contained in the top of the pagoda. The fairly new chedi was designed by the Department of Fine Arts, and was built to serve as a centre of learning for Buddhist monks. The very elegantly shaped chedi is painted in white colour and very elaborately decorated in golden coloured artwork in modern style. Surrounding the chedi are eight smaller pagodas. The finial on top of the chedi is made of 60 kilos of pure gold.
The chedi and temple are located on top of Nam Yoi cliff, from where you will have a wonderful view of the surrounding rural area.
The interior of the Chedi
The first floor is used for meetings and conferences. The names of the people who donated for the construction of the chedi are engraved in the wall
The second floor is beautifully decorated with murals, showing scenes from the life of the Buddha
The third floor is used as an ubosot or ordination hall. The marble images of 101 highly revered monks are displayed here
The fourth floor is a museum, where you can learn about the abbot of the temple
The fifth floor contains a staircase to the hall where the relics of the Buddha are enshrined
How to get to Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol; ~
The Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkol in the Wat Pha Namthip Thep Prasit Vararam temple complex is located in Nong Phok district, some 80 kilometres from Roi Et town.
Getting to the chedi by public transportation from Roi Et town could be a hassle, by far the most convenient and comfortable option is to hire an air conditioned car with driver to take you there. Most hotels will be able to arrange one for you. Agree on the price before leaving.
Admission & opening hours
The Chedi is open daily from 6 am until 5 pm. Entrance fee is 20 Baht per person

Visit Yasothon and Roi Et to see water buffalo Largest wooden church That Kong Khao Noi (2019)
Attraction No. 1: Buffalo and newly built bridge วังอิผุยพลเทพ เมืองสรวง ร้อยเอ็ด
We take the short cut road and will drive along the rice field edge. Hopefully, we can also spot some cute water buffaloes on our way to the bridge. This kind of buffalo isn’t closely related to the African buffalo even though they look similar. Water buffaloes in Asia aren’t dangerous and so they’re domesticated. To the farmers, water buffalo is their best friend. Do you know that water buffalo is native to South East Asia and Indian Subcontinent? And it’s a cultural symbol of Thailand? In the past, farmers depended more on water buffaloes to work in rice fields. Sadly, their population is very low and endangered nowadays. It’s always declined in the past few decades. The 14th of May each year is a Thai Water Buffalo Conservation Day nationwide. In the past few years, many towns had been successful in holding different activities or events to mark the day. These included unforgettable and extraordinary buffalo’s wedding, or an impressive contest of beautiful buffaloes.
Attraction No. 2: That Kong Khao Noi พระธาตุก่องข้าวน้อย ตาดทอง ยโสธร
I’m at That Kong Khao Noi now. It’s the first place for today. That Kong Khao Noi is a captivating ancient pagoda dating back in 24th Buddhist century. This was probably during the late Ayutthaya period or equivalently during the 19th century A.D. It’s located at Ban Tad Thong in Yosothon, 9 km. from the city. This’s a unique place to learn some more history about Yasothon. It’s a must visit when you are here. This’s a well-known story among Thai children. Once upon a time, during the rainy season, Thong is a young rice farmer aged 30. He’s no father and lives with his elderly mother. One day, he went to the rice farm very early in the morning. However, in the afternoon, he felt exhausted and was very hungry. Unlike other days, his mother brought him a lunch box late on that day. Thong stopped working in the field and rested under a tree waiting for his mother to deliver some food. When he saw his mother coming, he was very upset. He asked his mother “why do you bring such a small box of rice?” “It won’t be enough for me”. Thong didn’t want to listen to his mother anymore and so he hit his mother so hard till dead. After he was full but he didn’t even finish the whole box of rice. He realized that he has just murdered his mom. He cried so hard but there was nothing he could do to save her life. Later Thong decided to build a pagoda to dedicate to his deceased mother. He intended to keep her bones in it. He constructed the pagoda that looks like the shape of a box of rice.
However, many critics still argue that this pagoda isn’t the one built by the young ordinary farmer due to its size is too large for a person to build. They argue that there’s a smaller one in a different town of which they consider to be built by the young man. Around the pagoda, you can see a lot of models including cows, buffaloes, elephants and roosters. The pagoda is in the middle of a small but remarkable rice field with the brick pillars to the side. The brick wall also surrounds the square pagoda.
If this is more of your style, this city will provide an unforgettable experience. Some historians say that the construction of the pagoda is related to a folktale saying that villagers heard about a renovation of Phra That Phanom so they collected valuable items and holy objects among themselves to be put in it according to their belief. While on the way to Phra That Phanom which is situated in the nearby province, villagers were told by another group who has just returned that the renovation has been completed. Villagers then decided to use their valuables to build That Kong Khao Noi instead. It’s registered as a national ancient monument since 1936 or over 80 years ago.
Attraction No. 3: Song Yae Catholic Church โบสถ์คริสต์บ้านซ่งแย้ ยโสธร
This's the majestic church built in Thai style. The Tourism Authority of Thailand announces that this place has a unique cultural heritage and so lists this site as the ‘unseen Thailand’. It’s located in Ban Nong Sonyae in Thai Charoen district, north-east of Yasothon. Found in early 1900s, this church is now over 100 years since it’s initially built. It’s gone through several renovations from a very tiny hut to the current version renovated in 1947. This’s considered the largest wooden Catholic Church in Thailand. This Church has 360 wooden piles and over 80,000 pieces of wooden roof.

Pin Peat in Ang Chek Ang Chorm temple (Siem Reap)
To know more about Cambodian music:
Facing the royal palace of Siem Reap, along the National Road 6 is a sanctuary containing two Buddha statues in the position of abhaya-mudrā, defined position of the hand representing the absence of fear, peace and security. They were discovered in the 1950s. They are considered as two sisters: Preah Ang Chek the eldest and Preah Ang Chorm the younger. There are many legendary and real stories around them. Popular belief sees them as representations of two Angkorian princesses!
Both statues are venerated by both Cambodians and Thais. Believers come here to influence the future of their lives (luck, money, health, work, child ...). For this they pray, make requests, offerings of various natures sold behind the temple (Flowers, incense, perfume, light, fruits, various foods, money, music, liberation of sparrows ...) and promises of new offerings in the temple if the first ones are granted.
Today popular belief regards these two entities as the protectors of the city of Siem Reap.
Another statue is found in the middle of National 6, under a large sacred tree. It is, according to the belief, Ya Tep. This entity is today considered as a Neak Ta, a protective tutelary entity. According to belief, it even helps in the prediction for the lottery! This statue looks like that called the leprous king originally on the eponymous terrace in Angkor Thom. But it’s actually Yama, the god of death. Today the original statue of Yama is at the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh and that in situ is made of cement.
The Pin Peat Orchestra plays every day of the year. Several teams of musicians take turns. Unlike the Pin Peat set of the Vat Bo pagoda ( widely deployed, this one is reduced to its simpler expression: xylophone (roneat aek), gong chime (kong vong thom), barrel drum on support (sampho), pair of barrel drums (skor thom), oboe (sralai thom). Like the material offerings cited above, music is supposed to flatter the hearing of divinities and to give them pleasure. Daily, the Pin Peat ensemble is used in Buddhist pagodas, at the royal court to accompany the Ballet, in the shadow theater or the masked theater.

at The City Pillar Shrine
According to an old Thai tradition, a city pillar had to be built upon the establishment of a new city. King Rama I had the Bangkok city pillar erected near the Temple of the Emerald Buddha on Sunday, 21 April, 1782, with the citys horoscope inside. The original pillar was made of cassia wood known as Chaiyaphruek, measuring 75 cm. in diameter and 27 cm. high. In the reign of King Rama IV, the old dilapidated pillar was replaced by a new one made of the same kind of wood, measuring 270 cm. high and standing on a base of 175 cm. wide, sheltered by a Prang-shaped shrine as it appears today. The shrine also houses images of protective deities including Thepharak, Chaopho Ho Klong, Phra Suea Mueang, Phra Song Mueang, Chaopho Chetakhup and Phra Kan Chai Si.
Open : Daily from 07.00-18.00 hrs.

National Museum of Cambodia
The museum houses one of the world's largest collections of Khmer art, including sculptural, ceramics, bronzes, and ethnographic objects. The Museum's collection includes over 14,000 items, from prehistoric times to periods before, during, and after the Khmer Empire, which at its height stretched from Thailand, across present-day Cambodia, to southern Vietnam. The Museum buildings, inspired by Khmer temple architecture, were constructed between 1917 and 1924, the museum was officially inaugurated in 1920, and renovated in 1968.
History
A sculpture during the Khmer Empire.George Groslier (1887--1945), historian, curator and author was the motivating force behind much of the revival of interest in traditional Cambodian arts and crafts, and it was he who designed this building that is today 'traditional Khmer' architecture. It is perhaps better described as a building enlarged from Cambodian temple prototypes seen on ancient bas-reliefs and reinterpreted through colonial eyes to meet the museum-size requirements.
Control of the National Museum and Arts Administration was ceded by the French to the Cambodians on 9 August 1951 and following Independence in 1953, the then Musée National de Phnom Penh was the subject of bilateral accords. In 1966 Chea Thay Seng was the first Cambodian Director of the Museum and Dean of the newly created Department of Archaeology at the Royal University of Fine Arts. This university that form its foundation as the Ecole des Arts Cambodgiens in 1920 was intimately linked with students, artisans and teachers who worked to preserve Cambodian cultural traditions, can still be found to the rear of the museum.
