Places to see in ( Bremen - Germany ) Roland Statue
The Bremen Roland is a statue of Roland, erected in 1404. It stands in the market square of Bremen, Germany, facing the cathedral, and shows Roland, paladin of the first Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne and hero of the Battle of Roncevaux Pass. Roland is shown as protector of the city: his legendary sword (known in chivalric legend as Durendal) is unsheathed, and his shield is emblazoned with the two-headed Imperial eagle.
The standing figure is 5.47 m tall, and stands on a 60 cm rostrum. A supporting column, crowned by a baldachin, brings the combined height to 10.21 m. The statue was carved in limestone from Elm, and was commissioned by the city fathers to replace a wooden one burnt in 1366 by Prince-Archbishop Albert II. It confronts the church as a representation of city rights opposed to the territorial claims of the prince-archbishop.
Statues of Roland appear in numerous cities of the former Holy Roman Empire, as emblems of city liberties, Stadtrechte. The Roland statue at Bremen is the oldest surviving example. From Bremen the symbol of civic liberty and freedom spread to other cities and has become a symbol of the new Europe. Since 1973, it is protected by the monument protection act. In July 2004, along with the town hall, the statue was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Town Hall and Roland Statue in Bremen - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site Town Hall in Bremen dates back to the 15th century, and has been used as a town hall continuously for over 600 years. It was expanded in the New Gothic style in the early 20th century, but the original aspects of the building still remain. Unfortunately we couldn't visit inside, as it was closed for the day due to a function.
Just outside the town hall is a statue of Roland, a knight and paladin from the royal court of Charlemagne. He is associated with freedom, good governance, and defence against tyranny, and statues of him are quite common in northern Germany. This is one of the largest, oldest, and best preserved.

DER BREMER ROLAND - THE ROLAND STATUE - BREMEN - DECEMBER 10, 2015
The Roland Statue in Bremen really looks impressive, 5.5m tall (10m in full from top to bottom), dating back to 1404, when we also visited it in the summer of 2015, it was hard to imagine that the statue was 611 years old, it is really so old and pretty huge. The statue is the central landmark in the heart of the Bremen Old Town next to the beautiful Town Hall.
Roland has been all over the past 6 centuries the protector of Bremen and its inhabitants, guarding the city and the civil liberties of its citizens, and watching over the market square (Marktplatz). He holds his sword, called the sword of justice in his right hand, and his shield with the imperial eagle on it.
The statue of Roland became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, when it turned 600 years old. It looks really impressive and picturesque especially in the morning sunlight. It is strange to see what happens around it on most holidays, and it is even stranger and harder to find it during the Christmastime when huge and numerous Christmas Markets - Weihnachtsmärkte, are held all around it, and lots of people gather at the foot of it.

Fountains and statues in Altstadt, Bremen, Germany #Bremen - ????️ Travel video
The historic city center of Bremen, Altstadt (Old city) is an absolutely wonderful part of the Hanseatic city on the Weser, in northwestern Germany.
Amazing well preserved buildings, streets, fountains, statues, the UNESCO World Heritage - Town hall and Roland statue, the fairytales and legends, the Schlachte promenade along the Weser river, with its old ships, the pretty little half-timbered houses of the Schnoor quarter, dating back to the 15th century, everything is fabulous, charming, unforgettable.
All these are my photos, taken in October 2018.

DIE BREMER STADTMUSIKANTEN A BRONZE STATUE IN BREMEN GERMANY
Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten von Gerhard Marcks (1953) vor dem Bremer Rathaus, gefilmt in Bremen, Deutschland, um 17:58 am 13. April 2015. The Town Musicians of Bremen - a bronze statue of 1951 (erected in 1953) by Gerhard Marcks depicting the four town musicians of Bremen (a donkey, a dog or a hound, a cat and a rooster) - the protagonists of a folktale by the Brothers Grimm, filmed in Bremen, Germany, at 5:58 P.M. on April 13, 2015. The statue, erected in 1953, stands by the Old Town Town Hall in Bremen, a Hanseatic city in Northwestern Germany.

The bronze statue of the Town Musicians of Bremen is 2 meters high. It was created in 1951 by a German sculptor Gerhard Marcks (Bauhaus master), erected in 1953, and it is the most famous representation of the Bremen Town Musicians, a real logo of the city. It stands next to the Town Hall, to the west of it (near the entrance to the Ratskeller - the Town Hall Cellar, which is a historical restaurant and winery beneath the town hall.)
The statue depicts the four Town Musicians of Bremen - a donkey, a hound (dog), a cat, and a rooster (cock), the protagonists of a folktale by the Brothers Grimm.
It is really interesting, although it is not beautiful, e.g. the cat does not resemble a cat, and it is the worst of all the four animals here. But it was created by a Bauhaus master and sculptor.
However, the statue attracts lots of tourists (probably even more than the nearby stone Roland Statue, much more valuable and 615 years old! [in 2019]) all year long, and it is also the most photographed landmark in Bremen. Most people usually hold on to the front ankles (hooves) of the donkey figure and make a wish. Touching its front hooves is said to make wishes come true.

Bremen so frei – Ein Fest in 11 Liedern
**********
Website:
