1990s Coin Operated Lion Kiddie Ride
Filmed at Joyland in Great Yarmouth on September 24th 2012.
The matching pair for this tiger ride ( this unusual two-seater lion is another ride that I know very little about. I have only ever seen two of them; this one at Great Yarmouth's Joyland and another outside Claremont Pier in Lowestoft. I first came across these in 1998 at which point they looked relatively new so I'm guessing they date from the early-mid 90s at the earliest. As they were both on the Suffolk and Norfolk coast, I'm inclined to point the finger and say these were probably made by JM Kiddie Rides. They certainly have a JM feel about them. Having said that, there's no sign of them ever having had any manfacturers' markings and JM usually did mark their rides. There's also a side to these rides that makes me think they may not be British at all. But I suppose they could come from a European mould and then have been made by one of the Norfolk-based companies in this country.
Unlike the lion and tiger at Claremont Pier, this lion does not have a carousel pole at the front of his saddle but instead has regular handlebars at the front of both seats. Far more practical probably even if it doesn't look so nice or ornate!
I'm not sure if the music is original to the ride or not. It sounds the same as the very loud music used on the Merrivale Model Village rides so it's possible the same restorer fixed this one up as well.
And just because somebody's bound to mention it, yes, that IS a headless Bob the Builder next to the lion. No, don't ask me how he lost his head, or why he has what looks for all the world like mud plastered on top of his severed neck! Sounds like a scene from Bob the Builder: The Horror Movie where Bob sticks his head down a freshly dug hole in the road and the hole collapses in on top of him , taking his head with it. Now his headless ghost roams Great Yarmouth, his voice still eerily calling from Scoop's speaker... But apparently nobody knew how to fix Bob's head and just left the muddy wound instead! :P
If anybody has further information, I would love to hear from you.
I am currently working on a website about coin operated rides, particularly those made (or at least commonly distributed) in the UK during the 1950s-90s. Please visit If anybody has old photos/video footage that they wouldn't mind sharing with me, please e-mail me at coinoperatedrides@hotmail.com or leave a comment below. I would be eternally grateful. Thank you! :)
Video Game Arcade Tours - Dunes Amusement Arcade (Cromer, UK)
Super Bikes 2, Deat Heat, Multi-Player pacman, crane games, 2p machines and redemption. This is a bit of a mystery arcade, there isn't really anything online with regards to it, not even an address! For it's size, it's well balance in terms of video games to redemption ratio. Not bad!
Dunes Amusement Arcade
Address: Cromer NR27 9HP, UK (52.933101, 1.298090)
Many of the arcades in the UK (Mainly seaside arcades) are called Amusement Arcades. They are typically packed with redemption-based machines with very few video games (As video games simply do not make money). I have placed the word Amusements in the title for these types of places as they are not true Video Game Arcades, but deserve some sort of mention. As gambling is legal in the UK, they tend to include fruit machines (aka slot machines) and various other things money-making games, so video games really take a back seat in places like these. They also really hate filming, I'm not sure why because it's free advertising, unless dodgy things are taking place lol
An amusement arcade (often referred to as video arcade or simply arcade) is a venue where people play arcade games such as video games, pinball machines, electro-mechanical games, redemption games, merchandisers (such as claw cranes), or coin-operated billiards or air hockey tables. In some countries, some types of arcades are also legally permitted to provide gambling machines such as slot machines or pachinko machines. Games are usually housed in cabinets. The term used for ancestors of these venues in the beginning of the 20th century was penny arcades.Video games were introduced in amusement arcades in the late 1970s and were most popular during the golden age of arcade video games, the early 1980s. Arcades became popular with children and particularly adolescents, which led parents to be concerned that video game playing might cause them to skip school.

Video Game Arcade Tours - Magic City Amusements (Great Yarmouth, UK)
It's a pretty big redemption fest to be honest. Gamblers, 2p machines and ticket-based redemption. The only new machines they have are redemption-based. No video games at all. They have air hockey and bowling at the back.
