Rolling Hills Zoo in Salina, Kansas
Located near the middle of Kansas, this zoo is a quality and rare find that features several different kinds of animals that is a great place for family friendly entertainment. After touring the zoo itself, there is a very nice diorama museum featuring many life-size animals and scenes inside the main building. This was probably my favorite and most memorable part of the zoo experience for me when my wife and I visited last year. At the zoo, there are at least but not limited to the following live animals: Antelope, Australian Wild Dogs, Black Bears, Black Swans, Burmese Pythons, Camels, Chimpanzees, Cougars, Flamingos, Giraffes, Goats, Green Tree Pythons, Iguana Lizards, Koi Fish, Lions, Llamas, Macaw Parrots, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, Mandrills, Orangutans, Ostriches, Rhinos, Sheep, Tortoises, and White Bengal Tigers. That doesn't include the many more species in the life-size diorama museum, featured in the latter part of this video.

Last week, James and I made a spontaneous trip to the zoo! We had never been here before and decided to tape our adventure. It was a lot of fun. The area was really cool too since we've never gone to Salina together before.

First birth of 2015
Lee Richardson Zoo welcomed the first baby of the year on 5 January 2015 when a female addax calf was born. The healthy fourteen pound baby was the first offspring born to Juno, who came from Rolling Hills Zoo in 2013 on a breeding recommendation from the Addax Species Survival Plan (SSP). SSP’s are committees of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums which coordinate captive breeding efforts of rare and endangered species among accredited zoos, where captive populations serve as a hedge against extinction. These cooperative programs involve zoos from around the globe, with the goal of maintaining healthy, genetically diverse captive populations.
The baby was born in the barn and has remained in the barn or holding pen with her mother since then due to inclement weather. Over the next few days the calf and mother will be outside in their African Plains exhibit during the day due to warmer temperatures.
The calf is a welcome addition as it provides hope for the critically endangered wild addax population. Fewer than 300 are thought to remain in the wild. Thirteen captive-bred addax were released in Tunisia in 2007 in an effort to re-establish the species in its native habitat.
The addax is a large antelope, native to the Sahara Desert and well adapted to the harsh desert climate. They survive on the sparse vegetation that appears after meager rains, and can go for weeks to months without actually drinking water. Their body temperature can increase several degrees during the heat of the day and cool at night to delay sweating and reduce water loss. Broad hooves support their stocky body while walking on soft sand. The species has long been threatened by poaching, severe droughts, and from the hazards of living in a perpetual war zone.
