Rollright Stones, Counting The King's Men, Oxfordshire, England
The 'King's Men' neolithic stone circle is near Rollright, above Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. Traditionally, anyone who can count these stones correctly three times, can then ask for their heart's desire. Many have tried, but who can count these stones?
Although petrified into stone, the King's Men seem alive; some seem to appear and disappear, to merge and to separate. There's even the legend of a baker's boy passing by on his way to deliver his master's bread, who tried the clever ruse of placing a bread-roll on every stone, intending to count the customers' rolls back into his basket: But just as he finished placing the final roll, a flock of birds came and carried-off all his rolls. Later, his boss the baker made him wish he'd not tried this foolish thing!
These days, there are (probably) about seventy stones visible in this circle. Sorry about the quality: I had to wait until dusk before visitors had departed.

Chipping Norton is a market town and civil parish in the Cotswold Hills in the West Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire, England, about 12 miles southwest of Banbury and 18 miles northwest of Oxford. The Rollright Stones, a stone circle 2.5 miles (4 km) north of Chipping Norton, is evidence of prehistoric habitation in the area.
The town's name means 'market north town', with Chipping (from Old English cēping) meaning 'market'. Chipping Norton began as a small settlement at the foot of a hill on which stand the motte-and-bailey Chipping Norton Castle. Only the earthworks of the castle remain. The Church of England parish church of St. Mary the Virgin was built on the hill next to the castle. Parts of the present building may date from the 12th century.
Chipping Norton was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Corporations Act 1835. Its neoclassical town hall was built in 1842. Chipping Norton had a workhouse by the 1770s. In 1836 the architect George Wilkinson built a new, larger workhouse.
The Chipping Norton Railway opened in 1855, linking the town with Kingham on the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway. In 1887 a second railway opened, linking Chipping Norton to the Oxford and Rugby Railway at King's Sutton, and the CNR became part of the resulting Banbury and Cheltenham Direct Railway. Extending the railway from Chipping Norton involved digging a tunnel 685 yards (626 m) long under Elmsfield Farm west of town.
Until 1962 Chipping Norton railway station served the town. Now the nearest stations are at Kingham and Ascott-under-Wychwood. A group of media, political and show-business acquaintances, some of whom have homes near Chipping Norton, including former Prime Minister David Cameron, is referred to in the media as the Chipping Norton set.

The Rollright Stones (A Brief Visual Tour) Oxfordshire / Warwickshire, United Kingdom
Definitely worth checking if you are travelling through the area or touring the Cotswolds. Not as spectacular as Stonehenge and am pretty sure not made by Aliens but impressive standing stones none the least given they were erected around 5000 years old.
Consists of three main sites being the Kings Men Stone Circle, The King Stone and The Whispering Knights. All are featured in this video.

The old witch sayeth:
“Seven long strides shalt thou take And if Long Compton thou canst see, King of England thou shalt be.”
Off went the King, shouting -
“Stick, stock, stone As King of England I shall be known.”
On his seventh stride the ground rose up before him in a long mound sometimes known as the Arch-Druid’s barrow. The witch laughed and declared -
“As Long Compton thou canst not see King of England thou shalt not be. Rise up stick and stand still stone For King of England thou shalt be none; Thou and thy men hoar stones shall be And I myself an eldern tree.”
And so it was that the King became the King Stone, his men the King’s Men Stone Circle, and his treacherous and conniving knights the Whispering Knights

Haunted Stone Circles : The Witch of The Rollright Stones
A site survey of the Haunted Stone Circle. The Rollright Stones is a Haunted Henge located upon the Oxfordshire/Warwickshire border, England, United kingdom. Built in the late Neolithic time period, the site was already in use - a large Dolmen, a Neolithic Grave marked by Standing Stones, already stood to the east of the Henge about 400 metres away. Today this is called The Whispering Knights. The site of the Rollright Henge was actually part of a larger Neolithic religious complex which connected with Meon Hill, about 15 miles away to the north. Both sites are closely linked to each other. The Henge is 108 feet in diameter. Though most of the stones lie in their original position, some of the stones have been replaced and moved over the course of time. The Rollright Stones are not only one of the very oldest Henges in the whole United kingdom, but their mythology also makes them one of the most important. A site of great importance to Modern Pagans, believed to be a Nexus of Ley Lines. During the 16th,17th,18th and 19th centuries - local women used to believe the stones granted fertility. On Midsummer Eve, local women in search of a husband would run naked around the Henge, believing this would give them a vision of their future husband. The most famous legend concerns a Witch and a Dark Age King.
The King, his Knights and his soldiers, called The Kings Men, were travelling across the land when they were confronted by a local Witch. The Witch predicted to the King - Seven long strides thou shalt take says she - and if Long Compton thou canst see - King of England thou shalt be. The King took seven strides but could not see the village of Long Compton - so the Witch then declared As Long Compton thou canst see, King of England thou shalt not be ! Rise up stick and stand still stone, for King of England thou shalt be none ; thou and thy men Hoar Stones be, and I myself an Elder tree. With that all of The Kings Men, who were standing in a circle, were turned to stone - forming the Henge. The King, who was standing alone a few metres to the north was also turned to stone. As the Witch backed away from her work, she bumped into three of the King's Knights who were standing to the east, plotting that they should now be King, after seeing their monarch turned to stone. For good measure she turned all three Knights to stone as well. Now all part of the complex, the Knights became The Whispering Knights, and the King became The King Stone, which lies a few metres to the north of the Henge.
It is said that at midnight on certain nights of the year, The King, his Knights and all The King's Men can retake human form for a short period of time - but when that time is up - they must retake their positions and return to stone. Though of course this legend comes from a much later historic time period than Antiquity. Also some people believe the name of the Witch was Mother Shipton - however this is a 17th Century addition to the legend - and can be discounted. The King Stone itself was a Bronze Age addition to the site, The Whispering Knights and The King's Men had already stood for centuries before the King Stone was erected. To fully understand the true Occult nature of The Rollright Stones - one must first understand its important connection with Meon Hill and another Bronze Age Barrow called Sal ' s Grave.
The Rollright Stones still hold an aura of the mystical and the ancient about them - something that most other ancient sites have long since lost. One of the most important historic, mystical and Occult sites within the entire British Isles. It is said the Witch of the Rollright Stones still dwells there, acting as a Sentinel and Guardian. IF EVER SOMEONE SHOULD TRY TO DAMAGE THE STONES - SHE WILL APPEAR AND TURN THEM TO STONE !!!

What do we prefer? Fact or fiction? Evidence or Stories? Having explored the myths of the Rollright Stones in our earlier film 'Standing with Stones', when attention turned again to this well-loved site, it was amazing to discover how little we actually know about it. Rupert Soskin strips back the mythology to find ... not very much!

15 September, 1875. Long Compton was the scene of a bloody and bizarre street murder which sent shock waves through Victorian Britain. Anne Tennant As she went to the local baker's shop to buy a loaf of bread. a man stepped forward, thrust his pitchfork through her throat pinning her to the ground and then carved bloody crucifixes on her face and chest with a bill hook. The perpetrator was arrested. he even claimed that his actions were to protect the community and that there were 16 other witches in Long compton whom he would also like to kill. several of his neighbours agreed with him. an inquest was held in the Red Lion two days after the incident, the jury returned a verdict of 'wilful murder', one of the more extreme incidents involving witchcraft which occurred in Long Compton over a period of several hundred years and which continued well into the 20th century. The tradition stemmed from superstitions surrounding the Rollright Stones, an ancient stone circle situated a mile away just over the border in Oxfordshire. Legend says that St Augustine came to Long Compton in the late 6th century when he preached in the church and raised a man from the dead.

How Harry and Meghan want to join the Chipping Norton set Gorgeous Cotswolds homes
How Harry and Meghan want to join the Chipping Norton set: Gorgeous Cotswolds homes that could be the house-hunting couple's new palace.
There comes a time in every couple's relationship when the question of moving in together becomes impossible to ignore.
And when those two lovebirds have been stepping out for 15 months — even though they live 3,500 miles apart; he in the UK, she in Canada — it's not so much a case of 'if' as of 'when' they will settle down.
So it comes as no surprise that Prince Harry, 33, and his actress girlfriend Meghan Markle, 36, are said to be house-hunting.
Royal sources have exclusively told the Daily Mail that the royal couple are looking in Oxfordshire and are particularly interested in high-end properties tucked away in the rolling Cotswold hills.
A good friend of Harry's says the Prince, whose father's residence, Highgrove House, is in the south Cotswolds, has a long-standing affection for the area, while Meghan is said to be entranced by its rustic charm.
'He is searching for a new home in the area,' the friend reveals.
'Before Meghan, he was vaguely looking in Norfolk, but didn't find what he wanted. Now, with her input, he's renewed his search.'
Certainly, the lush green countryside encompassing swathes of Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire is a huge draw for London-dwellers eager to snap up rural boltholes.
Just an hour or so from the capital, it's home (or at least a weekend retreat) to A-listers, politicians and media executives: the Camerons, Beckhams, Kate Moss, Lily Allen and Stella McCartney all have million-pound properties in the area.
'It's like a magnet,' says Sophie Gannon, of Savills Estate Agents in Banbury, Oxfordshire. 'If you get one person, you get them all.'
However, Harry isn't following the crowd but listening to his heart. The Cotswolds, and specifically Highgrove, which was bought by his father's private estate in 1980, is where the Prince spent much of his childhood.
