Avenches Arena is a Roman amphitheatre in Switzerland and definitely a proof that the roman empire was setting foot to Switzerland back in ancient history. We think it's cool that the HRE can be found in Swiss culture and that this can be part of a history documentary.
The history of Switzerland can be found all over the country. Also in Avenches where the Romans built an amphitheatre. Gladiator fights in peaceful Switzerland? Yes, yes indeed it has happened. In Switzerland's history, there were Gladiator fights and other shows like fighting exotic animals. About 1800 years ago, the Romans built an Amphitheatre in Avenches. Then it was called Aventicum and part of the Roman Empire.
Today, Avenches is about the most peaceful town we have ever been to. Also the population decreased to about a quarter. Nevertheless, the theatre spirit lives on and this is why every summer there are shows held in the arena. It needs to be said that the swapped the animals and fights with music and theatre. Events held today include the music festival Rock Oz’Arènes that features world famous stars or the Avenches Tattoo. Now bear in mind that the Arena is quite small for today’s standards. This means you will be closer to your favourite musicians than anywhere else.
If you came here for the animals, then Avenches has got a treat for you. Just next to the city, there is a horse racing track and stables where the known Swiss horses Freiberger are being bred.
The region around Avenches is not touristy at all and here you can immerse in the Röstigraben (German-French language barrier) and enjoy this wonderful mix of languages and cultures.

From the 14th to 18th August, the magnificent Roman amphitheatre at Avenches, Switzerland will ring to the sound of rock and electronica for the 28th edition of the Rock Oz'Arènes festival, with this year's stellar line-up featuring legends including the Scorpions, the New Roses, the trio of Christophe Maé, Benabar and Boulevard des Airs, Wardruna, and Alan Stivell.
Avenches Castle
The castle of Avenches overlooks the Roman theater of the ancient city of Aventicum, former capital of Roman Helvetia. The castle was built in the 13th century. Its renovated Renaissance style facade is a unique architectural demonstration in Switzerland.

The former Roman town of Aventicum – today is called Avenches – is situated in the northernmost part of the Swiss canton Vaud. The large, well preserved and excellently restored Amphitheatre is an important tourist attraction. Walk through the streets of Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland in this video. You will get a feel for this historic and important spa resort town located in Kanton Vaud near Lake Neuchâtel. While many Swiss towns containing lakes are usually organized around the lake, Yverdon is different. The town is about half an hour from the lake shores. However, the city was the recipient of the Wakker Prize in 2009 for efforts they made to connect the old town with the lake.
In addition to lake Neuchâtel, the natural features of the Jura mountains, Orbe plains, and the Brove hills define this town’s charm. They also create an idyllic setting for the thermal-spas (often recognized as Switzerland’s most important spas). These thermal springs are renowned for their high content of magnesium and Sulphur, as well as a beautifully renovated spa facilities and attached 4 star hotel. These structures are built upon historic Roman spas that recognized the healing benefits of these springs nearly 6000 years earlier.
Historically, Yverdon held significance in for the Roman Empire as it connected the Rhone and Rhine basins as well as the Rhone and the Danube and offered control over major routes like the Geneva-Avenches. The Roman Castrum (meaning strong hold) was a naval and military base designed to offer defense for the Roman Empire’ northeaster board along the Rhine. It featured huge ramparts and 15 masonry towers that spanned over the 5 acers. These features made Yverdon a civic center as well as a resort town and defense strategy. Barbarians conquered Italy in the 5th centrury and endangered Rome in the process. Because of this threat the Yverdon camp had to be abandoned. The residents of Eburodunum, who lived on the outskirts of the camp, overtook the Castrum.
If you visit Yverdon, you will not have shortage of things to do. There are a number of unusual museums to visit including, the Europe’s first Sifi Museum, a Swiss fashion museum, and a museum honoring Swiss pedagogue Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi who was connected to Jean-Jaques Rosseau. Additionally, as you will see in this video a few castles to tour including Savoy Castle (dating from the 14th century, a prominent landmark in the old town), Palace Pestalozzi, Yverdon Castle, Palace d’ armes, and Theater Benno Besson. In the summer you can also enjoy water sports and beautiful hiking.
