Banya - Sauna Experience | Tours in Russia - Siberia
One of the most popular traditions in Russian culture is the bathhouse or Banya. It involves a lot of steam, high heat, frozen cold, and an invigorating beating with birch leaves and branches. The locations of the original type banyas are not easily found by foreigners, but visiting a Banya is highly recommended.
The Banya has not decreased in popularity today for many reasons. Traditionally, the Banya was the common way for Russian villagers to cleanse the body, but the banya is also thought to have a powerful physiological effect on the entire organism. Researchers have found that the blood supply to the skin, muscles, and joints are notably improved after a visit to the Banya. The body's metabolism is increased considerably, the number of red blood cells and the number of hemoglobin increases, the overall oxygen level increases and impurities are purged. The banya assists in eliminating toxins from the body and improves circulation of the blood.
The word banya derives from Latin balneum, which means 'to chase out pain'. The benefits of banyas and saunas were the subject of ancient philosophers such as Aristotle and Hypocrites.
There are two major types of traditional banyas: The Russian Banya and the Roman Banya. Today many variations of both can be found. In the Roman Banya, the air is hot and dry, while in a Russian Banya hot and moist conditions are found.

Orthodox Christian Russians Mark Epiphany With Dip in Icy Waters
Across Russia, the devout and the daring are observing the Orthodox Christian feast day of Epiphany by immersing themselves in frigid water through holes cut through the ice of lakes and rivers.
Epiphany celebrates the revelation of Jesus Christ as the incarnation of God through his baptism in the River Jordan.
Russian believers imitate the baptism by entering the water and ducking themselves three times either on the evening before Epiphany or on that Jan. 19 feast day. Many make the sign of the cross, some others hold their noses.

The capital city of Russia, Moscow, has many names and nicknames. There are various approved nicknames, such as the First Throne, which means Moscow is the first capital of the Russian state, or Golden Dome, which represents the dome of Moscow churches that collect gold.
However, there is one nickname for this city that has been known since the Middle Ages, namely Third Rome.
Philotheus (Filofei), an Orthodox monk, was the first to call Russia Third Rome. In 1523-1524, he wrote a letter to the Duke of Moscow and asked him to oppose heresy. According to Philotheus, the duchy of Moscow is the last stronghold of true religion.
The entire Christian empire has changed and has turned into a single sovereign kingdom, Philotheus said in one of his letters. Two Romans have fallen, the third is still standing, and it will not be in Rome Four.

My Russia Trip 2018 - Путешествие в Россию 2018
Leaving on July 7th, 2018 I began my first trip abroad! Studying for 4 weeks with 5th week of visiting Saint-Petersburg then a few free days in Moscow before leaving on Aug. 11th, 2018. Met lots of people, learned many things, had fun, and will have these memories forever! Also still not sure why my camera never recorded in 1080p...apologies for any low-quality shots in this. Better than nothing. Also didn't realize just how much I recorded up and down with my phone, so better planning next time!

The Catherine Park
The Catherine Park is a park, located in the town of Tsarskoye Selo, 25 km south-east of St. Petersburg, Russia. It is an integral part of the royal residence in Tsarskoye Selo. Catherine Park, which received its name from the Catherine Palace, consists of two parts: a regular old garden and English garden.

The Hermitage Pavilion in Catherine Park. Hermitage a name taken from the French language was a common feature of regular gardens in the 18 century. They located in the wild area of the park and intended to enable the owner of the estate to rest and dine.
The Upper Bathhouse a building for bathing. Upper Bathhouse contained six rooms: an entrance hall, dressing room, bath, steam bath, boiler-room and an octagonal central hall for relaxation.
The Grotto a building intended as a nook for a rest on the hot summer days.
The Cameron Gallery building that designed to offer the best possible views over the surrounding park, and especially the Great Pond, the upper story of the building is surrounded by a colonnade consisting of 44 slender Ionic columns and decorated with bronze busts of the great figures of antiquity.
The Agate Rooms building in Pompeian style was a northern variant of an ancient Roman thermae or public baths.

Russia: Ice cold water cleanses the soul on the Epiphany
Hundreds of people plunged in the cold Lena River in Far East city of Yakutsk on Saturday to mark the Epiphany, a holiday marking the baptism of Jesus in the Orthodox Church. The epiphany font in Zeleniy Lug (Green Meadow), a vast valley separating central Yakutsk from Lena river, was consecrated by Bishop of Yakutia and Lena Roman.
Each swimmer took a triple plunge, according to the Orthodox tradition. The temperature of water measured from three to five degrees. The outside temperature was minus 46. Around 10,000-15,000 of Yakuts are expected to participate in the ritual. Among Orthodox Christians, water in considered to have unique qualities from the nights of January 18 to 19. It is believed to not only purify the body but also relieve people of diseases, cleanse the soul and strengthen faith.
The Epiphany is celebrated in Russia and other Eastern Orthodox Christian countries on January 19.

The Viking age lasted roughly 300 years. From the first recorded raid on an English monastery on Lindisfarne in 793 A.D. to 1066, when Norway's greatest King Harald III (aged 50!) died in berzerkergang (fighting bare-chested without armor and shield with an axe in each hand) from an arrow to his skull in an attempt to conquer England. A few months later another Viking, today known as William the Conquerer (actually related to Harald III) succeeded in taking England.
The Vikings raided and fought all over Europe. Often in the service of Norwegian Kings or as mercenaries for other European rulers. The Roman Emperor had his own Viking army known as the Varangian guard in Constantinople.
It was whilst being the leader of the Varangian guard that Harald Hardråde (later called Harald III of Norway and founder of Oslo) eventually amassed such wealth that he was able to successfully court the 2nd oldest daughter of one of contemporary Europe's most powerful rulers: Yaroslav The Wise. They married and returned to Norway where they founded what is today the capital of Norway, Oslo.
So who was this last Viking Queen of Norway? That's the story I investigate whilst exploring Kiev, the city she grew up in, before ascending to the Norwegian throne.

For more Viking history I highly recommend watching History channel's TV show; 'Vikings'. It's actually quite accurate in terms of the historical events they depict. Ragnar Lothbrok was indeed a Norwegian Viking King and Lagertha was a female warrior ruler. The woman who plays Lagertha in the TV show is actually a Canadian but with Ukrainian ancestry;
