Roman Tomb Matala Beach, Crete, Greece Minoan Caves with Roman Skull
Tomb caves west side of Matala beach, Crete. 2010.
Probably, originally, Minoan caves which later became tombs for the Romans. Matala was the port of Phaistos during the Minoan period and of Gortys during the Roman occupation.
A few beatniks lived in the caves during the early to mid sixties and then later the hippies came. By 1970 it was a shifting hippie commune and immortalised by Joni Mitchell in her song Carrie, about her relationship with the red haired devil who carried a cane and frequented the Mermaid cafe on the beach below the caves. The hippies came and went and came back again several times, but now the caves have been designated an archeological site, and are usually uninhabited except by the spirits of the past and the bones of old Roman soldiers which are uncovered when the cliff face erodes.
Matala Beach and Caves, Crete, Greece
Matala Beach is a really relaxed and fun beach. This video just gives a flavour for the beach and the Roman Burial chambers (Caves used by the hippy community in the 60s and 70s). This is definitely a must to visit.
HIPPY CAVES! They Lived In Ancient Roman Tombs?!
Matala is a small coastal town on the Greek island of Crete. Like most places in Greece it is steeped in history, but this place had some interesting residents….HIPPIES!!
During the 1960’s and 70’s hippies migrated here and lived in the ancient Roman tombs carved out of the cliff face during the Neolithic Age (that’s more than 6,500 years ago!). We get that this is a beautiful beach and we can appreciate the appeal of living a simple life, but living in an old tomb?! We’re not so sure….
After our dose of hippy town we headed to Triopetra Beach (Three Rock Beach). Our Airbnb host recommended this as an ideal place to camp and he was spot on! Beautiful beach, great taverna, free showers and quiet after sunset - PERFECT!

Matala Crete Greece, beach and caves - ex hippie commune
The artificial caves in the cliff of the Matala bay were created in the Neolithic Age. Matala was the port of Phaistos during the Minoan period. In the 1st and 2nd centuries the caves were used as tombs.
Matala was then a fishing village. In the 1960s the caves were occupied by hippies who were later driven out by the church and the military junta. Now Matala is a small village living mainly from tourism.

Crete Matala Roman Tombs
Matala is identified with the man-made caves carved out of the rock thousands of years ago in the steep cliffs that rise above the north side of the bay and beach.
No-one is actually certain when the caves of Matala were made. Current thinking is that they are Roman or Early Christian tombs.

Matala, from a Roman Cemetary to a hippies resort
Matala is a small village in southern Crete that became widely known during the 60s when it was discovered by hippies as a free resort for their holidays. The Roman cemetery carved on a small rocky mountain near the beach was used as a dormitory by thousands of mainly English youth who made Matala and the island of Crete known all over the world.
